Firstly 500C is great, but the components required to operate at that temperature are expensive and it's already a pricey proposition. And 5m3 *is* a small battery, that's 8 tons of dry sand - if you can push it to 500C that'll store you about 940kWh of heat, assuming your winter heating load averages about 10kWh a day you'll have to resort to grid energy by February. 300C-ish is much more approachable from a home usage/DIY perspective, at the same volume that drops you to about 56 days of heating. Obviously you then have to factor in a whole bunch of other stuff - you need to add your hot water requirements, you can subtract some of your load if your home is energy efficient, the system itself will have efficiency losses etc etc. But if your goal is to take as much of your summer excess as possible and stick it in a form you can run your heating &amp; hot water system off for the whole heating season, being able to take advantage of the CoP of a heat pump is essential at these lattitudes, unless you want to brute force it with an even bigger sand mass(assuming you have enough panels to heat it all in summer, that 5m3 block is already going to require a few hundred hours of charging if the heating array is about 2kw).</p> <p>In the current market is doesn't make a lot of sense because you can just sell your excess to the grid and use that to pay for your winter usage, but if we end up in a future where export rates drop a lot or the DNOs get even more stringent with export limits then it might be worth looking again. Heat exchanger to draw the energy out of the battery and dump it into a tank of water, get an old heat pump with a knackered fan system and plumb it up so the heat exchanger sits in the warmed water tank which it can then multiply, would probably be the cheap way to do it. So ground-source heat-pumps are already starting at 12 degrees, even in winter. They have an efficiency factor of 5 or 6 times the energy you put in (COP or SCOP). With current incentives &amp; pricing, it's just a natural consequence of how seasonal our solar production is. At least in Scotland you can be somewhat selfish if you want without feeling too guilty about it given how much of our overall energy mix is renewables, so it's not like you're charging your car on ~50% coal or whatever when you need to draw from the grid for it.</p> <p>That said my thinking agrees with what a fair number of the people watching the industry seem to be hinting at, which is that the present situation is unlikely to continue for much longer, so your instinct to maximise self-consumption is probably right longer term. If the Warm Homes grants achieve even half of the numbers being targeted that's already a big chunk of new solar out there, not to mention all the grid-scale projects in the countryside and the increasing number of business premises putting in big solar installs - given our creaking inadequate grid infrastructure I expect we'll first see an accelleration of the trend towards "smart" tariffs like Intelligent Flux where you have to let the utility company control your battery and export being the better option, and then generally just decreasing payouts for exports in general probably with a switch to stuff more like Axle where you get paid flat rates to join temporary Virtual Power Plant configurations to provide grid balancing services.</p> <p>Maximising self-consumption year round would be the ideal but sadly the only system I could find for actually capturing excess summer generation in a useful form would be building a thermal battery, which would involve digging a 5-10m3 pit in the garden and burying a huge metal vat full of sand with a metre of insulation on all sides; resistive heating elements buried in the sand to charge it to a few hundred degrees C over the summer, then using a heat pump to draw the heat out again over the rest of the year. Quite interesting over the last couple days to watch solar fully power the house, and excess sent to the battery, and see the battery drain at night.
