I’m sure on one level ‘we’ are all bored (or even terrified) about all this.

I doubt if there are any ‘deniers’ on here, but maybe some people more (or less) optimistic than ’the average’ due to ‘hope’ or actual understanding/knowledge.

It’s fascinating/depressing that (most) governments (and the BBC) are (at last) fairly sure ‘it’s real’ and ‘something must be done’ and there’s no need to ‘balance’ science with scepticism anymore.

The UKGov/Boris seem scandalously complacent about only setting targets and relying on the market and individuals to deal with it all.

It’s understandable that people don’t want to be worse off and even more so that those who feel/are ‘poor’ want/expect more.

As ‘we’ know, even getting people to imagine that fewer cars/less traffic might actually be better for most (not just in a climate context) is hard/impossible.

For the Govs (inc SG), more/bigger cars isn’t a problem - as long as they are electric - and, maybe, people use them less - say 20%…

Covid changed everything, for a short while, but then ‘back to normal’ as fast as possible. Some changes in work patterns - the possibilities of, and now desire for, WFH (for some) plus realisations that ‘I don’t want to do that job anymore - at least not for THAT money’.

What’s to be done/what can be expected?

Can’t see me getting rid of the gas boiler any time soon. A completely free heat pump installation might change that, IF it was actually as useful/convenient/reliable.

(Recent talk of the possibility of hydrogen instead of fossil gas - any chance of that?)

But ‘better answers’ would be district heating - no sign of that being compulsory, even for new housing developments (or ban on flood plains or MUCH better insulation standards).

Not ready to give up milk/cheese, partly because the vegetable ‘milks’ are not great.

Meanwhile UKGov seems content to damage UKFarming with misguided expectations of cheaper food from elsewhere - have they seen the increase in shipping costs?

As always, energy - its provision and cost - is a big issue.

Not much emphasis on reducing demand.

More concern about the stability of fossil fuel supply than accelerating the “transition” to renewables.

Nuclear is firmly back on the agenda (not forgetting that even people like George Monbiot think it’s necessary). Even ignoring the radioactive waste problem, (industry says ‘not a problem, gets turned into glass and buried’), is the cost of nuclear electricity ‘value for money’?

I don’t really expect to be alive in 2050, but I certainly hope the lives of my grandchildren are generally pleasant and secure.

Before then I want there to be an obvious trajectory towards the elimination of the danger of ‘runaway climate change’.

Meanwhile I don’t want to be cold or hungry.

More importantly I want that to be the case for others - plus good health and wellbeing.

Rational changes in energy and food production plus adequate housing might be good places to expect improvement.

More trees (probably) good, not convinced artificial/industrial carbon capture likely/possible and potentially dangerous to rely on the development of such technologies.

Where are we with tidal, large scale battery storage and other ‘maybes’?

Dear Friends,

My beloved wife Fiona passed away on Christmas day morning after a 10 month battle with cancer. Fiona spent her last days at St Columba’s hospice in Edinburgh and died with her family around her.

I want to thank everyone who has already sent us messages of support and will post news of funeral arrangements when I have them. xx

Edinburgh is fortunate to have a range of shops. Try a few, ask for advice, choose one you feel comfortable with.

As Jacquie Phelan says "1 Choosing a Shop - walk into store, making a mental note of your sense of height in inches when you go in. Wait for service, observe the reception you get, talk (if you can get the fellow's attention), then take note of your stature upon leaving the store. If you feel appreciably smaller, do not return. Find another bike shop, and hope for a real human connection, a salesperson interested in what you want to do on your new bike, how you intend to use it."

Edinburgh shops with web sites Alpine Bikes, BG Cycles & Blades, Bicycle Repair Man, Bicycleworks, Biketrax, Eastside Bikes (secondhand), EdinburghBicycle, Leith Cycle Co, Macdonald Cycles, The Bike Chain, The Triathlon Centre, Velo Ecosse.

Bikes are also sold in Supermarkets and DIY stores. Often pretty cheap - you get what you pay for, but will they be able to help if you have a problem?

If you want a second-hand bike with a 3 month guarantee try The Bike Station.

Gumtree can be a good source of local bargains, but - buyer beware...

Not sure how many here will know, but Tulyar is currently laid up in hospital in Glasgow. I visited the ever talkative patient last weekend and today. Spirits are fairly high, and his prognosis is good, but recovery time scale is unknown.

Tulyar asked me to relay that he would welcome any visitors from CCE for a chinwag, and would also welcome anyone with journalistic reach. PM me for details.

The aim of this site is to attract a wide range of people who have something to do with bicycles - keen or casual.

In addition it is hoped that CCE will be useful to people new to cycling and those still thinking about riding a bike in or around the city.

CCE has been set up by .anthonyrobson who produces the online magazine citycycling and Chris Hill who runs the CyclingEdinburgh.info site.

As an open forum it can be read by anyone (all ages and backgrounds) - so no swearing or abuse please.

Hi,

Are there any plans to provide HTTPS? I get that part of the charm of this site is the simple nature of the forum software, but while (for the sake of argument) 25% of users might be tech-savvy and would welcome the extra security, 25% might be technophobic and not know that they are sending their email and password (which may well be shared with other sites) in the clear on public WiFi, for example.

There are free HTTPS certificates available from LetsEncrypt, and all modern web servers support HTTPS. I'd be happy to help with the transition, if necessary.

Thanks,
Bruce

Indeed, the hottest topic right now (Ice) isn't appearing in the topic RSS feed at all. Does anyone else see such issues? I might be missing something obvious. Or maybe google reader is terrible.

I've been thinking for a while, that it would be good to have a Welcome/Introductions thread to welcome new users and for existing folks to remind us who they are, and what bikes they ride etc.

Anyone fancy a coffee this Friday? Canal barge by the Leamington Lift Bridge (The Watershed). Say from about 8.30?

Think some in-person chit-chat would help break what seems to be a bit of the doldrums in the forum at present.

Would be nice to see you there.

For anyone who hasn't been to a CCE coffee before - it's super friendly, just look for the table of cyclists and say hello. People come and go as suits and the chat (and coffee) are excellent.

In response to queries... (crowdsourced - may be subjective/idiosyncratic - this is CCE)

It is NOT compulsory to use any of these (and perhaps should be discouraged!)

AFAIK - as far as I know
ASL = advance stop lines (lines behind which even police cars are supposed to stop, unless on green or amber)
BUG bicycle user group
BuM / B&M - Busch & Müller - provider of retina-searing dynamo lights to at least 4 users of this here CCE
BSO - bicycle shaped object - (rude) - usually meaning the sort of HEAVY bicycle bought in 'non-traditional' outlets. Can put people off cycling - OR persuade them to get something better once they realise they like it!
"The difference between a budget bike and a BSO is that the former is built to a price, but built to be ridden, the latter is only designed to sell. Once the customer’s money hits the till, or their payment clears, the BSO has fulfilled it’s function."
CAPS - Cycling Action Plan for Scotland managed by CS for SG

@Iain McR
Cream-drinking scourge of expensive coffee shops which he visits by overly-complicated mountain bike on the rare occasions when it's not in Bike Hospital. Camping refusenik who would ideally prefer to tour between Marriotts that serve a nice IPA. Life ambition: to assemble all regular CCE posters at his stoat-infested Borders dacha and lead us in a bout of dynamite and/or spear fishing. Writes letters to Ruth Davidson.

At some time (can't remember) three years ago today this thing went live.

From first post -

"
The aim of this site is to attract a wide range of people who have something to do with bicycles - keen or casual.

In addition it is hoped that CCE will be useful to people new to cycling and those still thinking about riding a bike in or around the city.

"

Seems to have worked.

Are there plans to add an https security certificate to this site?

We all know that sending information over the net unencrypted is not desirable, as it can be intercepted and changed en route (and I would hope that nobody is using the same email/username/password here as on any other sites, as it potentially puts those logins at risk as well). As well, some web browsers are starting to show security alerts for unencrypted websites, and some search engines are starting to downrank them in search results.

LetsEncrypt certs are completely free, and, as I found out, are actually fairly simple to set up using the dehydrated helper script.

I'm happy to help, if need be.
