@gembo That's the other thing that Incognito Mode is for.
I'll look in the garage to see if I didn't donate my most recent used 9-spd rear mech to the bike station...

Thanks @arellcat , they do look sturdy enough to pass the Hannah test. but more expensive than the Deore, which also pass the Hannah test Though I will check which Deore. As there are many Deores. The provider I am drawn to is Southwarer Cycles. The provider I don’t like the look of AliExpress. There prices seemed to shoot up the second I showed any interest.

@gembo - good shout a trained bike mechanic would be far to hardened. Given the quality and reputation I'm going for maybe poach the Saturday person from Halfords.

I'll take the Ron Swanson approach to sales, ID is government overreach and a person should be able to blow themselves up if they choose to.

@steveo nice reference to Black Books. You are Dylan Moran. (Bike mechanics are too hard for there to be a manny) but I will drink whisky with you so I am Fran.

Though what is your view on selling paraffin and also explosive material to minors as Corson was happy to do. As these were exceptions in the Game called Corson where he refused to sell, any customers anything if they were not specific enough from his shop in Stockbridge as recorded in the best ethnographic paper that academic ever wrote.

On https://www.openstreetmap.org, the CyclOSM layer doesn't load for me, but all the others do.

I've always used the 'Cycle Map' layer in OpenStreetMap instead as I didn't like the appearance of CyclOSM.

I've been trying to do some route planning for a few days now but cycleosm simply won't load tiles. It was always fairly slow compared to anything else, but I'm at the stage now where it's been sat open for 45 minutes and I'm still getting nothing but blank grey. There's a thread about it on the github going back years but people have been posting to it recently without any response - has the project died?

I assume that the Bike Smith on Causewayside is no relation to the one at Haymarket that has been replaced by the Bike Emporium. Unless anyone can confirm otherwise? That assumption is based on some poor reviews for the Haymarket one eg this one (which review Google unfortunately seems to think applies to the Emporium, which I don't think it can do since the reviewer says they'd been a customer "for years") compared to the consistently glowing feedback for the Causewayside shop.

Did a comparison of that Overpass query and EdFoC’s bike map recently and sent them some updates - in future maybe I’ll nerd up enough on OSM to do the ‘paper round’ and marshalls / feeders maps using it but for now Google My Maps has been the lowest friction. It was when I was checking open hours that I saw Bike Smith Haymarket permanently closed - wonder if it’s the same folks running it or not. They had a sideline in holding luggage for folks given proximity to the station!

I was surprised to read this, as I was sure that it was open when I passed last Thursday. So I stopped by on my way home.

Anyway, it is still open, but under a new name of "The Bike Emporium" (Very little signage)

While I was trying to figure out if it was open or not, the owner came out to see if I needed anything. Spotted that my back wheel didn't quite loom right, go it sorted and this seems to have fixed the creak that I thought was coming from my Bottom Bracket!

Don’t think this ‘plan’ has been mentioned here

“

Kevin Lafferty, CEO of Walking Scotland

Step It Up is our strategy for 2025 and beyond. It sets out how we plan to create a happier, healthier and greener nation where everyone can walk and wheel every day

…

Our mission To support people in Scotland to be active every day. We believe walking and wheeling is the best way to do this. To change the way people move, travel and enjoy life in Scotland, our work will focus on three themes:

…

A lack of facilities and poorly maintained pavements, paths and routes have made it harder for some people to walk and wheel and access local greenspaces. This means they’re less likely to be active, and more likely to feel lonely and isolated. To tackle inequalities in access to everyday walking and wheeling, sustainable travel and outdoor physical activity, we’ll focus on championing inclusion, removing barriers and supporting those who are most inactive

“

https://walkingscotland.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Walking-Scotland-Strategy-Step-It-Up-.pdf
