Looking to buy a used Dahon or similar.

Nothing fancy, but would prefer a pannier-rack (and definitely needs to be able to have one added).

Either hub or derailleur gears fine, but something "Edinburgh-appropriate".

I'll look in the usual places, but thought I'd mention here in case anyone was keen to get rid of one.

Various posters have mentioned they have new or nearly new bits of cycling stuff that they'd happily pass on or perhaps swap or sell at a discount.

Perhaps it is time we had a thread to offer the stuff on? I guess the "rules" would be set your own price or whatever and if somebody wants something or has a question, conduct it by PM.

Personally I have (for donation);

1 x Schwalbe Marathon plus, reasonably new, never punctured, 700x28c

2 x Michelin Lithion, used once or twice before replacement with something more colourful. 700x23c (I've got too many "new" black tyres off of bikes that will never see the road)

1 x unused Blackburn frame pump (designed to fit between traditional pump pegs) with Presta valve

1 x hardly used Topeak micro-pump with Schrader valve (no use to Mr Presta)

1 x set of traditional clip pedals, unused, leather tightening straps

1 x chain guard for single speed / hub-geared bike (covers top of chain and chainring). SKS I think in smoked translucent plastic

More will appear if anyone takes some of this stuff and I get deeper in the box of odds and ends

I'm sure there must be a thread for this already, but couldn't find one...

A satisfactory afternoon in the bike shed has achieved the following

Studded tyres wrestled off Brompton and not-studded ones put on

Brompton chain cleaned and lubed

Studded tyres wrestled (less forcefully) off commuter bike and not-studded ones put on

Commuter bike chain cleaned of embarrassing rust spots and lubed

Big bell moved from commuter bike to Elephant Bike and vice versa (the big gold bell looks better on the EB)

Seatpost QR on Elephant Bike disassembled, cleaned and appropriately lubed. Now it's smooooth.

Headset on road bike disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with the right preload on the stem (so isn't notchy any more)

Mini-Greenroofer kept me company some of the time. She did the swapping of bells. She rode the Brompton and EB around outside the garage (both for the first time) and acknowledged that the EB was very lovely to ride.

Tales of successful wrenching, parts aquisitions, tool envy and the sheer pleasure in a job done well, can all get in the bin. This is a thread in which one may lament the frustration and general velocipedal malaise borne of seized bolts, broken spokes, frayed brake cables and frayed tempers.

Today I was going to swap the power connectors on the torpedo from Tamiya to Anderson Power Poles, which had arrived in the post in doublequick time. But the brakes on the torpedo really needed reset because I'd run out of thead on the barrel adjusters, so I thought I'd do that first.

While dropping the suspension, the adjusting nut for the right-hand Macpherson fell out of my hand and dropped down deep inside the transmission tunnel. The radius rod balljoint then needed drifting out because it was seized in its bracket. Then I discovered the cable stop for the brake was also seized; not even Mole grips could deal with it. It took a blowtorch and WD40 to break the corrosion. Then I discovered the brake cable strands were coming to bits, so I had to replace the cable entirely.

While I had the wheel and strut on my workbench I regreased the actuating arm for the brake shoes, and then discovered all of the spokes on the inside of the wheel side were loose, and worse, I found a broken spoke. Fortunately the only spokes I could find in my box were the correct length; I don't know where anything is anymore because I tidied my garage last weekend. Fixing and truing the wheel, and then replacing the rim tape took an hour.

I reassembled the brake cable, cable end cap and stop, only to find I'd clamped the cable too far down and split the strands, but couldn't tighten the cable further because it wasn't long enough to reach to the hub.

By now I was running out of time, with other important stuff to do later, and indeed tomorrow, so I called time on sorting the left-hand brake, reset the barrel adjusters and discovered the brakes were no better tuned than before.

I still couldn't find the adjusting nut for the strut, but it magically reappeared when I picked up the entire machine and shook it. I put the suspension back together and realised I'd done so without the washer below the adjusting nut. But I couldn't remember losing it in the first place either.

So for five hours of work my net gain was replacing one spoke.

Today it was my turn to be rubbish, because I failed to notice that I left the house this morning without the means to open my bicycle lock. Lest malicious readers think I own only one lock, heh, I have several, but the lock I brought with me today can be closed without a key. For convenience I suppose.

Luckily* this discovery happened in the company of several CCEers. @bakky lent me a spare U-lock as extra security while @LaidBack and I went off to consider padlock destruction techniques and in search of another cafe so that I could wait for a lift home to look for the missing key. I found it, fortunately, and made sure it will Never Happen Again. Ever. Probably.

I eventually made it back into town and rescued my bike, failed to transact any business at three shops I visited during the afternoon, so rode home into the teeth of whatever the latest storm is and later delivered Big Lock to @bakky with the help of the huge enduro motorbike because I'd had enough of cycling for today.

* and in equal measure, embarassingly

SPOKESCOMP 2025 : MY FAVOURITE BIKE RIDE
Deadline 7 September

For our 2025 summer competition we’d like to hear about your favourite local bike ride, in Edinburgh and/or the Lothians. It may be a leisure ride, or your daily commute or perhaps the school ‘run’ with your kids.

In judging the competition, we want to know not just the route itself but, most of all, why this ride is so special to you. Hopefully your entry will entice or inspire other people to get on their bike and try the same or something similar.

So that the competition does not require technical skills, judging will be based on written entries. Your route should be fairly easy to describe, without too many intricate instructions, frequent turnings, etc. Photos and/or a sketch can be included and often help, but are not essential. You can also include electronic mapping if you wish, but this will not be included in the judging.

PRIZES
Top prizewinner gets first choice of prizes, and so on till all prizes allocated. Runner-up entries which don’t win a prize will get to choose a free Spokes map or buff

RUNNERS-UP Spokes map or Edinburgh map-buff

RULES
The competition is open to all, but members of Spokes Resources Group can’t win prizes

The competition closes on 7 September – entries will be judged soon after

Each person can submit either 1 or 2 entries
Your entry should hopefully inspire people to use a bike or to use it more often – but most important is to say why this ride is so special to you

The ride must be in Edinburgh and/or the Lothians, and can be short or long – e.g it might just take 15 minutes, or a half day

The ride must not need car transport but it can use rail for part of the trip.

It can be suitable for novice and/or experienced cyclists

You can, if you wish, include up to 4 photos and/or a sketch. Please if possible reduce any photos to around 1MB or less
Paper entries by post rather than email are ok, but we will not return them

We may try out routes before or after judging, before finalising the results

So that we can easily compare entries, you must complete all the questions below, and judging will be on the basis of that
If you wish also to send electronic mapping that is fine – e.g. we may use it if we try out the route

Spokes may use some or all entries on our website, in our Bulletin, in other publications or in other ways. We would of course credit your name, unless you ask us not to. We may produce a booklet of prizewinning entries, like we did in 2015. By entering the competition you give Spokes permission to use your entry material in our ongoing campaigning and promotional work in these or other ways.

HOW TO ENTER
Copy and paste the details and questions below into a document or email, then enter your answers.

I'm a bit of a Planet X fan, and have two of them, a Pro Carbon Evo, and a Kaffenback which is my triggers brush commuter which I've had for at least 12 years, it's been battered and bruised, and crashed multiple times, and it needs a bit of tlc.

It needs a new back wheel after a crash, and a new groupset as that is worn out. ALso the gear hanger, which is attached steel has been bent and bent back a number of times, and as a result the gears just aren't quite 100%. All of which will cost hunners of money.

On getting back to commuting last year I used my MTB a lot over the summer and thought I prefered the flat bars, so was considering either converting Kaff to flat bars, or just buying a new hybrid bike. However my neck seems to be adjusting to road position again, so I may stay on road bars now with plenty spacers, and shorter stem, which has worked well for me.

Has anyone got a Planet X Tempest (https://planetx.co.uk/collections/tempest), is any good? Also any experience of the SRAM electronic grouopset , or should I just stick with a mechanical Shimano groupset?

I'm thinking I might treat myself to one last nice bike.

We bought a small house a few months ago but it has no garage or shed. The bike lives inside for now but that makes the corridor quite narrow. We have a decent size paved front yard and was thinking about getting some bike storage for that (and perhaps all the bike tools, parts). Something that I can easily use every day without causing much noise in the morning.

Anyone here has anything like that?
The height up to 1.6m, no particular restrictions on the width and depth so far as we haven't put anything else here yet.

There's rust on the mudguards (one of them is held on with washers as it rusted away round the fixing), Gear 3 of 5 doesn't work, actually they just need indexed anyway to get 4 to work. The hub brakes need new pads.

It's of more sentimental value to me than monetary - I don't really want to get rid of it, but 6 bikes is too many.

If anyone is interested I'd happy to provide images, or arrange in person viewing. I would like some money for it, but not very much, arround £100 given the bit of work it needs, they seem to be advertised for £350-£380 for better kept examples than mine.

I bought myself a WaHoo Kickr in November, and plugged my road bike which is gathering dust onto it. Have a garmin watch for HR, and signed up to Rouvy and did an FTP test (which hurt my ego more than my legs), and started doing winter training on the bike dialed into my numbers.

I really did it to try and keep some fitness for hill walking - I don't do hills in adverse weather, so really no winter hiking for me.

5 months of doing training plans to increase power and VO2 max for 3-4 hours a week, and my FTP has only gone up by 13W, and my cycling VO2 max hasn't moved. I have noticed my walking Vo2 max is up 5 points though, but cycling V02 max is 10 points lower than walking VO2 max.

I went up my first wee hill of the year on Sunday, just West Lomond so small, and was blowing bubbles as I normally would on the uphill on my first walk of the year.

Not saying it has been a wasted 5 months, and hopefully there will be cycling benefit - will find that out tommorow as cycling home from work. However it does seem (in my case) that he only good training for walking up hills, is walking up hills. Ochils or Pentlands next week, then back onto the big hills (weather permitting).

Has anyone found online cylcle training usefull? Was my first experience of using power zones, or actually any structured training plan.

Spiky tyres have featured incidentally in several threads over the past few weeks, but we've not got any collected wisdom on them. What are your experiences with them this winter (when, I reckon, it's been icy twice since September, and hasn't been snowy at all)?

For what it's worth...

I put 700c Marathon Winters on the day after the first icy spell, and have had them on ever since. In that time I've covered about 200 miles in them, all on tarmac.

I've been running them at maximum pressure.

The studs round the centre of the tyres are definitely worn down significantly now, and aren't projecting much above the rubber.

I've lost quite a few studs from the back wheel, but none from the front. Last winter I was conscious of losing them, as I'd find them hanging out. This time I'm not. It could just be that it's actually riding on ice or snow that pulls them out...

Annoyingly I was in London yesterday on a Boris Bike, so didn't have the chance to see if they still worked when it was icy up here.

The worrying bit. I had the bike up on the stand today for the first time since I put the tyres on, and I found that all four wheel nuts were loose. They never normally work loose, and I wonder if the vibration from the studs has loosened them

The only benefit I've had so far this year, then, is a bit more exercise from pushing them along and a bit of entertainment from the sound of frying bacon that accompanies me whenever I ride.

I'm not sure they've been worth it this winter (yet), but I suppose that's hindsight talking.

Hello,

I recently bought a "tagalong", intending to take one child on the bike and pull the other one along to nursery. However, the bike I am pulling is very small and I don't think the tagalong quite works - I had to do quite a bit of humouring to get it to fit at all and with such a small frame the bike tends to lean over. As a result I invested in a "follow-me" tandem bike thing. It is absolutely worth the money and the resulting austerity measures. I think the tagalong is probably great for slightly bigger bikes - the bike my daughter has is an Islabike cnoc 14. If anyone would like the tagalong please let me know - it's practically unused and all the bits are still there. FOC of course.

This is the tagalong:

I dug out my Thule ProRide roofrack mounted bike carrier while creating havoc in the garage the other day. I have a towbar mounted carrier these days, so I have no need for the ProRide and it's just contributing to the garage chaos. I am therefore offering it on here free to a home of any reasonable kind (I don't think a bike carrier needs, or would even appreciate the benefits of, a "good" home). I suppose it could form part of an avant-garde artwork but that's far beyond my capabilities. Basically, anything that keeps it out of the waste processing chain would make me happy.

Bear in mind that it is 20-odd years old (maybe more, I can't exactly remember when I got it). Some of the small components look a bit corroded but I know it still did the job required of it when I last used it, which wasn't that long ago.

Obviously it would be easier for me if any interested party could come and view/collect it but I can bring it to you if necessary. I'm not posting photos here but can probably manage to provide same to any interested party.

SPOKES COMPETITION 2024: BIKES & SUSTENANCE

Closing date – midnight Sunday 8 September

“I cycled to the shop to use up the calories I’m going to put on by buying chocolate! “

Yes, bikes and food are inextricably linked in so many ways! We want to hear how you connect bikes with food and/or drink, in whatever way. You could win a great prize and some modest fame, and your ideas or experiences could help other people!

For example, you could write about…

your favourite recipe/food to take on a recreational ride [hints]
transporting food by pedal-power for a food bank [for example]
returning with produce and tools from your allotment
favourite takeaway for a coffee on your cycle to work
food shopping by bike [hints]
a philosophical treatise on the relationship between food & cycling
absolutely any ideas, practicalities or experiences linking food and bikes

Your entry might be an amusing incident, a simple handy hint, a heartfelt plea, an interesting picture or whatever – as long as it is about cycling and sustenance, we want to hear from you!

Factors in judging may include how useful your idea is, or how interesting or unusual your experience. Words alone are fine, even just one superb sentence, but a picture, diagram etc often adds value to an entry.

It’s easy to enter – but please carefully read the full rules below. As usual with our competitions, all or most entries will appear on our website (prizewinners normally named, other entries anonymous) and hopefully will give other people useful ideas (or a laugh!)

Most years about half of all entrants get either a prize or a runner-up map or buff!!

Super prizes (Including 10 runner-up prizes) !!

More details here:-

We've got a Shimano STEPs equipped city bike that is roughly five years old.

It has done some hard duty, first to tow a double trailer on turbo up and down the side of the Pentlands for a couple of years, then when the kids moved up to a longtail it became a prime choice for riding into the Pentlands to the start of hill runs, or out to Livingston for work.

I'm over 100kg these days so it is taking a pounding and the wheels are in notably poor condition, so I started pricing up some parts to build new ones.

Then I started thinking, okay, we've got these short travel "city" suspension forks where you can see each fork blade moving independently under hard braking. It's also a squeeze to get 2" Big Apples under the mudguards. Wouldn't it be nice to replace them with rigid forks? This is relevant to the new wheels because a lot of tapered MTB rigid forks are also "boost" spacing.

Now we're looking at quite a big investment (150-200 for a fork, 300+ for wheels). So naturally your mind starts going towards the ebike motor (it seems superficially OK, although it also sounds like something is rubbing 100% of the time)... and the battery isn't the freshest... and the handlebar controller has been smashed up so much that you just have the little underlying microswitches exposed (but they still work).

Now I haven't spent too long on this, but it doesn't seem like you can just pop on Amazon and get an E6000 motor that is new stock and warrantied. Possibly you could pair up a friendly LBS and get them to do a rebuild that they would stand behind but think of the labour cost on what is, at the end of the day a bike which only cost about £1400 to begin with. There doesn't seem to be a nice generic motor that fits the E6000 mountings (including even the Shimano E6100 updated version).

So now you start to think OK, am I really going to do the fork and wheels on a bike which could be one broken sensor away from disaster. We could pop down to Hart and get a nice new Gazelle and have a new warrantied motor and electrics (or Decathlon and have a cheapo version of the same).

But then five years from now...

I've been mulling over a powered trailer DIY project for picking up decent sized loads of wood, but when idly checking the pricing on a proper Carla powered trailer(yowza, DIY for sure) I found one retailer claiming it's illegal to use a powered trailer with an ebike as under UK law despite both being legal 250w motors it counts as being combined into a single 500w one once you hitch one to the other, which seems extraordinarily dumb, but not so dumb I'd put it past our lawmakers.

Is that actually correct, because they don't specify a source and a casual google hasn't turned anything up, but you'd assume they're not deliberately sabotaging their own business needlessly...

Been tutting at monitor for half an hour and then this:

"...that in future we raise the smoking age by one year, every year - that means a 14 year old today will never be legally sold a cigarette".

Wow, lets hope that actually goes through parliament!
