I suspect I know the answer having dug through a few companies' lists of rolling stock, but are there *any* services from Edinburgh to Newcastle that don't use those garbage little 2 bike closets where you have to stand your bike on its back wheel and just hope the train doesn't shoogle too much?

I'm not even sure my big honkin' ebike would fit, nevermind the potential for damage. It'd be nice to do the sustainable thing and use train & ferry to get myself to Europe, but it's been a right faff and not a small amount of money getting my bike just how I want it so leaving it behind and renting a "good enough" at the destination would sour the whole thing.

We are thinking of going for a cycling break to the Netherlands and would appreciate advice.

The broad idea is to get to Newcastle perhaps by car, leave it there and get the ferry over to Amsterdam. We'd then do a place to place tour, hopefully with luggage transferred.

Be good to have tips on where to go, what to see, luggage transfer etc

Hello folks
I am still in the early stages of figuring out some kind of crowd funding
A fellow dad at the high school and group member of the dad group had an accident involving a pedestrian and sadly has been paralysed. After a lot of effort he managed to regain some mobility in his hands but as I have not met with him and hear all this through the dads group who have been to visit him

He was recently discharged from the Spinal Unit in Glasgow and sent home to Edinburgh expected to fend for himself so I want to get something to hopefully help him get

Electric wheelchair like the hospital one
Possibly a recumbent e-bike he can operate with hands only
Other stuff for the home and his daughter to cope

his career as an artist will be difficult but I imagine he will not stop. his own page is here if you want to take a look

Looking at
crowd funding
go fund me
donorbox
and trying to figure out which would be best and have no fees or "tips" needed to not lose funding to the soulless site owners, any advice greatly appreciated

Intend to spread word to Critical Mass and Pedal On Parliament groups to get started and hopefully go national to see how much of a difference we could make to his life going forward

I was harassed by a taxi this evening - I want the driver to face some sort of penalty for their behaviour but previous experience suggests I'm onto plums. Is there anything else I can do? I don't think the incident was serious enough for the police.

Hi folks, we have abandoned bikes in our stairwell chained to the banister. The council has already told us they won't remove them as there are no council tenants on the stair.

Does anyone know a way to get the bikes removed cheaply? The Bike Station referred us to the council, which has proved a dead end. Locksmith?

I have started to commute again into Edinburgh a couple of times a week. Opposite the Haymarket Pub, under the new building, looks like cycle parking. As it's windows are clear allowing the public to see the facility I assume it may be a paid parking facility for the public?

Can anyone shed light on this and what is available please?

Hi folks,

I've got my 8-year-old nephew visiting this week and we've booked into Ratho for the clip and climb.

We've got a loan of a cargo bike and I was hoping to ferry him in sustainable style from where we are (Willowbrae) to the climbing.

We know we can do most of it along the canal towpath and will need to circumnavigate the aqueduct. But we wanted to know, are there any other parts we should be aware of or will need to avoid?

Cheers,

Sounds like I need to make a specification ;-)

- Any member of the family must be able to power it -> turbo must fit any size of derailleur bike, incl. kids.
- Doesn't matter if it doesn't "feel" like riding a real bike
- Must power a small monitor (~20W), some PC speakers (~5W) and a RaspberryPi* (2.5W) or laptop (~20W), so maybe 50W would be enough (?)
- Small battery backup to cover fluctuations, but no more than 10 mins without pedalling

I think the problem is going to be finding a suitable dynamo, capable of 50W

*I'm not sure if RaspberryPi e.g. RPi3 has enough graphics capability to stream video e.g. HD ???

Hot wax for chains. Seems like a good idea, but at £50 a pop, is it more snake oil than chain wax?

Presumably it’s mostly paraffin wax, so there must be a reasonably priced way to do this. Thoughts?

Having gotten all my utility routes nailed down I'm starting to think about striking out from my new place in Broxburn for leisure rides but unfortunately keep running into the West Lothian Deadzone, ie basically everything between Broxburn and Linlithgow west of Kirkliston. It'd be nice to pop over to Linlithgow for an afternoon or down to Bo'ness, but there don't seem to be any coherent connections in the region at all even if you count crummy narrow footpaths, your choices are to head over to Dechmont and take Burnhouse/Manse Roads which are unlit national speed limit, or go up the B8406 which has a big section with no pavement right at the point it turns into a 50mph winding uphill gradient. There's the canal towpath, but it's double the distance, half of it in the wrong direction, and turns to even-narrower-than-Edinburgh mucky gravel after Winchburgh by the look of things.

Waiting for the ATAP to be implemented will see me retired or possibly deceased before they get far enough down their to-do list to put in the proposed infrastructure on those routes, so I'm wondering if anyone's ridden either of the on-road routes before. Bearing in mind I'll be tottering along at ~15-16mph on my upright ebike not tanning it on a roadbike, am I better to just write off anything to the north, or is one or the other route tolerable?

I think it must have been when I was crashing through the foliage of Greenroofer's railway snicket from Myreside Road to Colinton Road down the side of Watsonian's cricket ground that I picked up a tick on the back of my thigh.

Now my doctor gave me a formal instruction to take ticks seriously after learning that I got them regularly whilst running. Shorts and short sleeved tops are verboten to avoid tick-borne encephalitis or even Lyme disease. Any ticks got are to be removed by no means other than a tick-pick;

http://www.otom.com/how-to-remove-a-tick

Now I don't keep a tick pick in the office, and in fact I left mine at my mate's in Northumberland at the weekend. So I'm oddly proud of the improvised pick I just made from a sheet of Diet Coke can. Quick trip to the disabled toilets and the unwelcome arachnid has been consigned to the sink intact and alive.

I think I'll add the improvised instrument to my toolkit.

Many of you will know of Shannon Galpin and her work with establishing the Afghan National Women's Cycling team.

After the US rapid withdrawal from there she devoted her time to evacuating as many of these female riders as possible with zero help from the UCI. Last year she got one woman into Dundee where she can study and cycle free from the Taliban.

Part of the saga revealed the corruption of Afghan cycling federation officials and she had evidence from the three male cyclists now requiring evacuation. Initially they went to Pakistan but they couldn't remain there. Now funding is required to get them to safety.

Can anyone check this link to see if it's accepting UK donations? We donated but took several attempts. Even $10 helps!

Shannon did speak at first Edinburgh Festival of Cycling and did Q&As with Emily Chappell at her EdFoC talk in 2022.

As mentioned on another thread, I’m looking into ‘bike theft as a barrier to cycling’.

Over the years the quality/price of locks I use has increased.

I almost never use bikes with quick release wheels in Ed, most of my skewers have been replaced with Allen bolt versions.

I’m aware that any keen thief is likely to have Allen keys, but as with most security measures ‘deterrent’ is always a consideration.

I quite often use a cable with a D lock - but when is a bit random. Partly depends on my notion of a bike’s desirability and where I might be leaving it and (to some extent) how long.

I’m increasingly seeing online advice of ‘use two locks’. Clearly this is ‘sensible’ as a deterrent, but can’t decide if it’s necessary/sensible!

I've decided that a goal this year is to increase my square size (currently 8x8), but there are one or two problem squares. For example there is one NE of Drem: Has anyone managed to get there without riding through someone's farmyard?

Hi All,

Is anyone aware of a pub/cafe/shop that is planning to show Paris-Roubaix on Sunday? My first thoughts were The Tourmalet and Detour Espresso but I couldn't get through to either on the phone.

Cheers.

Hello All!

Am moving into a Miller new build home in September, which also has a detached garage, where my bikes and the majority of my bike crap will go - hallelujah!

It seems that insurance companies will only cover me if the locks are British Standard BS3621, which I am pretty sure the garage won't be. Therefore, I will be looking to get someone in to sort this out - has anyone had something similar done before, and how much did it cost roughly? I hear that the front 'up and over' doors are pretty easy to break into, so what would normally be put in to secure them?

Also, I have heard about floor anchors and the like to have something solid to lock bikes to in the garage. I assume this would require some work to embed the anchor or whatever in some cement? That is far beyond my DIY powers! Again, has anyone else had something similar put in?

Apologies for a very OT question, but have any of you had good experiences with joiners, builders and the like?

We're still shopping around for a contractor to do our big renovations project, and would be grateful for recommendations. Thanks.

Instead of the usual SKS mudguards, I quite fancy some metal ones for this renovation project I've got going on. I'm nervous that they will be rattly or otherwise cause me lasting regret! Does anybody have experience of specific models?

Thanks

The excellent Howies courier bag that I've used almost every day for the last 6 years + is dying. The zip ont he front, where all the tools are stored, is bust, and the various tears and so on are looking really scruffy and taking away certain bits of storage.

So do I get another similar bag? Or do I shift it off my back and onto the bike? I've got a rack on the Kaff, and could put a seatpost mounted one on the Peacemaker. And there are some good pannier bags I could borrow (the shortlived attempt with panniers before was because the bags were a faff to get on and off).

Suggestions/Recommendations?
