I had been looking for a replacement for my cycle computer from the mid 1990s which gives up at the slightest hint of rain these days. After having seen lots of positive comments, and receiving an offer for a 20% discount within the Sustrans Shop recently, I bought a Beeline Velo 2, which I have been trying out alongside my existing cycle computer this week. My initial impressions are that it is really neat. It pairs with a smartphone via Bluetooth and app, via which routes can be created or uploaded and synced with the device itself on a handlebar or an optional stem mount.

A sat nav style display shows upcoming junctions and the default setting means that it beeps once at around 100 metres before an upcoming junction and then double-beeps at around 20 m away. If you go off course it reroutes fairly quickly. I have only used it on my commute so far, so that has been quite limited though. Minor annoyances are that it predicts arrival time very badly just now (assuming very slow progress) and I had to leave an option to allow routes with steps switched on to successfully add my commute, which does not include any steps. I wonder if that is somehow linked with the poor arrival time prediction?

There are several different display options to choose between while riding by pressing the top and bottom buttons (which are part of the edge of the device), and segments can be rated on the fly as either positive or negative by pressing buttons on either side. I assume that these choices must feed into the generation of routes depending on the route style choice of quiet/fast etc. but I haven't seen any obvious effects yet.

Does anyone else have one for the purpose of comparing notes? I see that they also offer a somewhat more robust (metal rather than plastic cover) and more expensive version for motorbikes.

https://beeline.co/products/beeline-velo-2

I'd like to make a custom route and get turn by turn directions to follow that route *that I've picked* on my phone, can anyone advise how to actually do that apparently hugely complex thing? Google will only give navigation directions on their crappy pregen routes and I just wasted half an hour meticulously plotting a route out into West Lothian on JustGoRide(any attempt to click more than a turn ahead and it will send you off kilometres out of your way to put you on the canal toepath) only for it to insist I have to log in to save the route, and wiped all my progress. Feeling a smidge peeved.

My Old Garmin Edge cycle computer is on the 'edge' of giving up the ghost.
I now mostly use a fancy garmin watch, mianly for mapping whilst hiking but I also use it for recording activities including cycling (it does a better job than the old cycle computer), and tbh it's bit of a pain to start the computer and watch and then delete the cyle computer activity when all I use that for is as a speedometer.

So, I need a cheap cycle computer that is wireless, doesn't need cables or other bits attached (except handlebar bracket) to the bike (so it can be used on multiple bikes) that will tell me my speed - don't need it to tell me anything else.

Any recomendations for such a thing, I presume they still exist?

Thanks in advance. :)

Edit: Also don't want it to connect to any apps, or need syncing or anything. Just switch on, tell me speed, switch off.

I got mr srd a go pro hero mini 11 towards the end of last year. have used it a bit but not a lot.

it stopped working after being used on Saturday. just bricked.

customer service a bit of a faff but seems like they'll sort it.

Just curious about other people's experience? as I've never heard anything particularly negative about them, other than cost.

Calling all Go Pro owners

After sitting glowering at me from the far corner of my desk for over 14 months, I've decided I shall be intimidated by the bewildering array of fixings and overly thick instruction book no longer - the GoPro will submit to my will (or go on ebay).

Annoyingly, despite having fixings to fix to seemingly just about everything, there isn’t a bike mount. So before I pluck one at random from ebay, are there any types I should look for ?

I've already got helmet mounted light, so I'd rather avoid sticking it up there, but also due to having crosstop brake levers, bar real-estate is at a premium.

•	Is helmet mounted better than bar mounted ?
•	Is fork vibration better/less-bad than head wobble ?
•	Could I hang it off the bottom of the drops ?
•	Can you get a garmin type 90degs twist on/off mount ?

Any pearls of wisdom much appreciated.

Why not have a smart app that picks up from other phones in cars or on pedestrians the location, direction of travel and relay that to the listener on the bike 50 yards down the road e.g. "beware bampot behind you travellng too fast and too close to the side of the road" or "pedestrian paying too much attention to my screen about to walk out in front of you".

So I have an old Garmin Edge 520. It's stopped charging because there's a poor connection at the micro-USB port. Garmin won't repair it, but they will sell me a replacement for £100. Places online will replace the port for ~£40. Before I just go with the first website that comes up on Google, do you have any experience of local (or national) repairers who have done similar jobs well for you in the past.

I ought to be able to do it myself - it's just a case of levering off the front and soldering on a new port, but I don't have the necessary soldering kit or skills.

Google is planning to buy Fitbit, but there are serious concerns about what would happen regarding personal data, especially health related data, stored by FitBit devices, and how it would probably be misused in ways users would not want, if Google were to be able to go ahead with this (especially given Google's past record of data misuse).

Trouble is, there seem to scores to choose from. Anyone able to recommend a particular one, or is accessing OSM via Chrome as good as anything? I'm not looking for navigation or route planning features, just access to the maps at a level of detail sufficient for cycling and walking off the obvious road and tracks.

Has anybody used a smartphone app that will permit a cyclist to be tracked in real time via a website? I see Strava has a Beacon function that seems to allow this, but you need to be a subscribing member (I.e. it costs money). I was looking for something that might be usable for our next bike bus outing, to allow parents to track where the group is along our route, so ideally would want something that’s easy to use, doesn’t need lots of registration/ sign in etc.

I'm finding more uses every day for the Garmin Connect app and website. Until recently, I just used it as a route to upload rides from my Edge 520 bike computer onto Strava, and didn't really pay much attention to it.

Having recently got a Garmin activity tracker watch too, I've found more things about the Connect app that are actually quite useful and better than Strava perhaps.

1) You can set up training activities, if you like that kind of thing, with intervals and target zones and stuff, and upload them to your Edge via the app.
2) You can use the calendar to schedule them, so on the relevant day when you turn the Edge on it will tell you what you're meant to be doing
3) You can create routes and use the app to upload them to the Edge to get turn-by-turn directions on your ride. I know you can do this on Strava, but my impression from the route I followed today is that it was better presented than the Strava one, with better treatment and warning about junctions and turns. It was also easier to set it up: the Connect route planner uses Google Maps with bike routes shown, which Strava doesn't any more.

Connect feels better integrated with my Garmin devices than Strava (as you might expect) and has lots of useful features to get the most out of your Garmin devices. Strava is still better for the 'social' stuff, though.

Of course you may know all this already...

How you can help us We are opening a call for any and all GPS tracks of train services. If you have a smartphone, then there are apps available that will let you log a track and then export it in a GPX format, there are a wide range of options on each app store. Once you have a track exported in GPX format, please email it to tracks@realtimetrains.co.uk with a link to the service from Realtime Trains.

[ETA: sorry, you have to register (for free) to actually read now. This was not apparent when I was linked to it elsewhere.] [ETA2 @chdot suggests the link here will work - did for me.]

Some of you will love this. (I found it oddly satisfying and am off to look at more blob maps now.) Via friends elsewhere who are professionally into this sort of nerdery.

"Here’s what we learned from ordering 213 curries at Wetherspoons"

"The picture emerging here is of obsessive menu engineering and predatory cynicism. Many pub and restaurant chains do this kind of thing a bit, but none does it with the ruthlessness of Wetherspoon, whose grand, cavernous spaces fill up each day thanks in large part to a menu that reads like several hundred carefully targeted microaggressions against the immediate community."

(maps are sort of GPSs right? I wasn't sure where this post should go)

Spotted on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/ZeroWasteShop/permalink/858073524348829/?sale_post_id=858073524348829

For those not on FB it is from the Dunbar Zero Waste Shop:

Our largest private client is Edinburgh University and we recently diverted 2.5tonnes of the geography department's maps from landfill. They're from all over the world and some date back to 1850.
In the Musselburgh shop we show a couple of hundred maps a day. Today's offering has a lot of Borders and English maps, mostly 1920s-50s
Given the political situation I particularly love this European Elections poster from 79.
We will be showing 10,000 maps (and map chests) at the new Dunbar Shop (next to the factory shop) on Sunday 23rd July from midday. They will all be sold at £2 per map. Some are likely to be worth quite a lot of money. All are fascinating social documents.

I would have thought this was worth an expedition. Jealous I can't go and nab some myself

Any advice on where to take it? (Yes, I should have just gone to the iphone shop or replaced it in the first place...)

Have been holding off posting this, as I'm sure it's much discussed and people are well sick of it, but after a lot of reading I am none the wiser. Hence the request for hive-mind first hand experiences/recommendations.

I find myself doing longer rides in places I don't know, brilliant as it is, my current garmin (edge 25) is of zero use with directions, as it was only bought to record stats and has a 5hr (on a good day) battery life.

I generally plan a route and export the .gpx to my mobile, then when I'm sure I'm lost I'll stop, get the phone out and confirm I'm lost.

Which Garmin/other device is popular with audex-ers ?

Hoping some one here can help.
I've been using map my ride for a few years now, syncing with my garmin and it's always been fine. Yesterday I also joined Strava and connected that to my garmin account as well.
Went out for a wee spin this morning, and it is showing up in Strava but not in map my ride.
MMR still shows the garmin as connected and says the last sync was this morning, but no activity. Can you only connect one fitness site at a time? I can't see any settings tab on Strava but since I just downloaded it yesterday it might be tucked away somewhere? Any ideas kind peeps?
