Morningsider on "French revolutions"

Recently back from summer holidays in northern France, visiting (and cycling in) Paris, Rennes, and St Malo.

I am sure most of you will have heard about the near miraculous work on cycle infrastructure and growth of cycling in Paris in recent years. Well, there are lots of cyclists and quite a bit of infrastructure, but cycling in central Paris is the closest I have ever come to playing real life Frogger. Certainly not for the faint of heart, or any cyclist minded to stop at a red light.

Rennes was a real delight - half the size of Edinburgh, a two line underground! Lots of cycle infrastructure, a largely pedestrianised city centre, public e-bike hire, high frequency buses and an amazing rail/bus/cycle station in the centre of town. Also, seems to be home to almost every remaining 1980s Peugeot road bike still in existance.

St Malo also had what appeared to be a rapidly expanding network of cycle lanes, plus a public e-bike hire scheme.

What really impressed me about all three places is their attitude to rolling out infrastructure. It clearly happens at pace and at scale, generally using low cost approaches. "We" would probably consider some of it a bit rubbish - much shared use, sometimes a bit narrow, route finding sometimes a bit tricky. However, it is there, there is a network, and there seems to be an attitude of live and let live amongst users. No obvious "concerns" about using bus stop bypasses, or sticking to rigid (and gold plated) design standards.

In all three places the facilities were years ahead of Edinburgh. If anything, Rennes should be the template for what Edinburgh could achieve rather than Paris - the scale of pedestrianisation (bikes largely allowed too) is quite something.

So I rode my new cargo bike home to Broxburn from Laid Back the other day and experiencing the A8 path without the front suspension I'm used to has really driven home how much it's degraded from neglect. Quite apart from the overgrown/inadequately trimmed foliage that's a perpetual problem on every path, the surface quality of several stretches is terrible whether due to potholes or huge tree roots pushing up speedbumps.

When I could ride in to Ingliston on the mostly much nicer northerly path and catch the tram the rest of the way it wasn't a big deal, but with the ebike ban that's no longer possible so it's the awful southerly path all the way in to the loop at Gogarburn. I was all ready to write in about it but honestly, is there any point when they'll inevitably just point to the West Edinburgh Transport Improvements Programme that might, maybe, at some unspecified future time once funding has been agreed and the 7th consecutive consulation has has downgraded the plans to "compromise" with carzealots include path resurfacing?

Has there even been any news about WETIP lately? The most recent thing I managed to scrounge up searching was from 2024.

Hi,

This dropped through my door last night:

https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/roseburntounioncanal

I couldn't find an existing thread to add this post to.

Though I haven't yet dug into the detail, personally, I like the use of bridges over potentially unpleasant roads. There is however a toucan crossing on the WAR which even so is probably better than the alternative (Telfer subway).

walked out of the office this morning to find a small bee trapped in a vortex of wind in the office doorway. Was getting very buffeted.

Spent a few mins rescuing it and then placed it on a buddleia next to the office. No sooner had it appeared to regain its footing a gust of wind swept it away into the middle of the large puddle 20 feet below.

welcome to Monday.

I almost added this to the end of my other topic, but it deserves a thread of it's own.

I'd love to talk to some people about getting a post-powderhall railway closure action plan together. There is so much potential when it goes for a direct link into the NEPN from Abbeyhill and quiet feeder routes running the length of Leith Walk / Easter Rd and beyond into Leith Links.

Status on Sunday 8th December 2024: resplendently spanned the full width of the path. Stepping stones just visible but only the bold dared to use them.

I think I might go insane if I read about another new cycle hire scheme somewhere in the UK whilst Edinburgh still goes without. Doubtless there have already been threads on this but what's the latest?

Did spokes say something was getting delivered this year? What is it going to be? When is it going to be delivered? Who is delivering it? Has it been scoped out? How many bikes?

Hoping someone has the inside track to restore my confidence that this will happen. Auchtermuchty will be getting a bike hire scheme before Edinburgh at the current rate of progress...

In March 2018, the Council acquired the former gas works in Granton Waterfront which substantially increased its landholdings within this priority regeneration area.

This acquisition provides an opportunity for the Council to take the lead in the regeneration and ensure a place making approach is widely adopted across the area. This will create an inclusive and sustainable approach to development, and accelerate delivery of new homes, school, medical centre, retail, services, creative and business space and enhanced public realm to provide a vibrant, well connected new city quarter.
First proper map I've seen from the council on the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet route. Looks promising - utilises several modal filters. Looks like Blackford Safer Routes gets a shout out too - good work Also!

(via https://drscottarthur.scot/2020/09/01/braid-road-briefing-a-full-re-opening-of-braid-road-is-not-proposed-at-this-stage/ )

Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route
The Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route is the second half of the proposed route from Frogston Road to the city centre. It will run along quiet roads parallel to Morningside Road.

In order to implement this proposed route road closures would be introduced at various locations to remove through traffic.

At its southern end the route runs along Hermitage Avenue between Braid Road and Hermitage Gardens. With Braid Road closed this link is lightly trafficked, however, were Braid Road opened this might require further intervention to ensure it was safe.

The proposed Greenbank to Meadows QR has been designed so as to cut out rat-running traffic from streets between Cluny Gardens and Comiston Road with strategic closures shown in the map overleaf (below). This would include diagonal closures at the junctions of Braid Road & Braid Crescent, and the junction of Cluny Drive & Hermitage Gardens, as well as a modal filter on Braid Avenue. With Braid Road closed, these further interventions would effectively eliminate traffic cutting through residential streets between Cluny Gardens and Comiston Road.

As part of Greenbank to Meadows QR It is also proposed to introduce two closures on Whitehouse Loan. One immediately south of Strathearn Road, the other immediately south of Bruntsfield Crescent. These closures will enable safe cycling on Whitehouse Loan and reflect proposals which have been put forward by local community group ‘Blackford Safer Streets’.

received today:

The City of Edinburgh Council is developing a new cycle route and improvements between the Union Canal and the Meadows via Home Street, Tarvit Street and Brougham Place. In addition, carriageway and footways will be resurfaced as part of this project on Home Street extending to Tollcross.

I attach a digital copy of the public consultation leaflet for the project which will be delivered locally tomorrow (Thursday 25th September). This leaflet provides detail on the plans we have proposed and a questionnaire for comment. [SRD: can't figure out a good way to post PDF; pm me if you want a copy]

The questionnaire is also available online for public and organisations to provide comment on and support for these proposals: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DRKR7W8. The closing date the consultation is 24th October 2014.

As a stakeholder of the project I would be grateful for your input and encourage you to review the proposals and complete the online survey. These projects together provide an opportunity to transform the street environment and improve the area for all users, residents and businesses; as well as providing a new family cycle route linking two of the City’s main off-road paths.

A project page has been set-up on the Council website with some additional background information which can be accessed via Edinburgh.gov.uk/cycling. Please feel free to circulate this information and survey within your organisation or to any contacts you have who may be interested.

Last night and the night before I was pushing my 3 speed over the Longstone Aqueduct heading west. I let two bikes come past with the wind behind them. I operate on a principal that if the oncoming bike is over half way it has right of way and I let it pass. I push bike against railing and stand on the wall. If I am over half way and a bike comes on going in the other direction I feel I therefore have right of way.

Sometimes there is a 50/50 too close to call e.g. if you both come on at the same time. Then it is usually who cracks first or indeed both parties stopping.

I always give way to people on foot.

Other etiquettes are available. E..g if on railing side (ie heading east) yu should always give way. Mixed etiquettes can lead to some minor unpleasantness.

The sign says dismount, this is largely ignored.

Does anyone else have a view [admittedly I have bored myself by this point in the post but in the spirit of our little community, go on, let me know]

WATER OF LEITH WALKWAY CLOSURE

Notice from the Council:-

I write to inform you that we have, unfortunately had to close the Water of Leith Walkway at Kinauld Tan Works Footbridge (Approx. Location: https://w3w.co/minute.guises.looked) as a hole has appeared in the bridge. There is no through route over this bridge in either direction and the suggested diversion is via Lanark Road West.

Presently, we do not know the scale of the damage or the underlying cause, this will be investigated in due course. Meantime, we need to protect the public and have therefore made the difficult decision to close the bridge to ensure public safety. While the hole is currently relatively small in size, it is still big enough for someone to get their foot caught in it or for a horse to get a hoof caught. Also, we do not know how this hole will develop over the weekend and it may increase in size. We are therefore asking everyone to respect this closure and for their own safety and the safety of others to use an alternative route.

This just got shared to our work cycling group - apologies if it's already been posted/discussed elsewhere. Usefully discussion of motor-normativity, induced demand, and other terms I'm less familiar with.

"Transport. Everyone has views on it. The proliferation of potholes, the reduction of bus services, the state of the trunk road network and many other apparent failings of the system regularly feature in media articles and conversation, even though most trips occur without delay or incident.

Beyond these day to day concerns, there are several significant underlying issues that affect how people choose to travel, what transport costs, and the effectiveness of transport infrastructure investment, that rarely feature in such discourse and are not well understood outside of academia or transport policy circles. This post briefly introduces some of these key concepts, with a view to informing debate on transport matters in the new parliamentary session, with a particular focus on road transport."

As mentioned in Threads Passim, the totally excellent Hannah who runs The Cycle Service with the equally excellent Chris has refused to put an Alivio or Sora rear hanger on to my tricross as she says shimano modern nine speed rear mechs are made of cheese. She tasked me to find a Deore Rear Mech on eBay. I tried but they were all Used so no idea if worth buying before trying. I did find one new one down in Sussex at Southwater Cycles but was scared the Any Deore Will Do was enough specificity as Road and mountain bike versions exist. I headed into town to check details with Hannah on Friday, stopping off at The Bike Station. There I was given a box of totally sh1t rear mechs Tourney etc and almost unbelievably an apparently good Deore 9 spd. I tried to buy this but Ezzie the mechanic said I don’t want to sell this as will be a lot of bother for Hannah to fit as it is a Rapid Riser, I said Hannah will be fine as she said Any Deore 9 spd. Ezzie sold me it for five whole pounds but told me to keep the receipt in case Hannah declined to fit it.. Hannah remarked, when I said any Deore 9spd I never thought for a second you would return with a Rapid Riser. I said oh are they tricky to fit? Hannah laughed, no she said that isn’t the problem - the problem is that now both your Brifters will change the same way rather than the opposite ways (down will be down on both sides and up will be up on both sides). You may find this confusing. I said I often found changing gears confusing anyway and we agreed Hannah would bung it on this coming Tuesday and we would see how it went. Hannah being totally excellent is not charging me as the bike has recently been serviced by her. What Larks. Pip. I imagine I am about to find out why Rapid Risers didn’t catch on.

Spotted reading the report on George Watsons' proposals for new floodlit artificial pitches at/near Myreside:

The site is mainly greenspace that is used as cricket grounds bordered by trees forming part of George Watsons College. To the south of the site is a Cricket pavilion, other buildings associated with the school and a car park.

The cricket grounds are designated Open Space in the Local Development Plan. To the far north is Merchiston and Greenhill Conservation Area whilst Craiglockhart Hills Conservation Area is south. Part of the latter is also covered by a Special Landscape Area and Local Nature Conservation Site. An Active Travel Safeguard route 'ATSG14' - Morningside - Union Canal link, borders the site to the west with a disused railway line
beyond this. The Union Canal is also to the far west.
Outwith the site is a second car park on the east side of Myreside Road beside the rugby pitch and grandstand with George Watsons College beyond this. The wider area
around the site is primarily residential in character.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Colour me intrigued. Is it referring in part to Greenroofer's railway snicket?

These are the ones over the rocky outcrop between Cramond and Cramond Brig.

For years it's been said that bypassing these would be 'too expensive' and 'environmentally damaging'.

There has been recent work done investigating the feasibility and cost.

"

1.3 A like-for-like replacement of Salvesen Steps is not recommended. The Council, Sustrans and local community are supporting a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant walkway to traverse around the rock outcrop at river level and thereby open the path to a much larger user group.

1.4 Such a walkway would also enable cyclists to connect Cramond Foreshore and the City Promenade with the National Cycle Network Route One, running to all points west and north of the city. The project is therefore actively supported by Parks & Greenspace and Transportation.

Report

Now -

Thursday 17 April – 7.30 – Cramond Kirk Hall

"

You will all be aware of our push to get the steps replaced and we know that this is very much supported by our members. We have kept in contact with the appropriate officials and have now received the first briefing as to what is proposed. This is rather exciting and there are four options put forward – one of which is unlikely, one an interesting idea and two that we suspect are more likely to be ‘runners’.

A thread for the Community Links Plus Finalist 2017.

But will it win funding?

(I'm sure we've talked about this before but can't find a thread)

"Meadows to George Street-Places for People - City of Edinburgh Council. This project proposes to create a direct cycle link between The Meadows and George Street, as well as the Old and New towns of the city centre along Hanover Street, The Mound, Bank Street, North Bank Street, George IV Bridge and Forrest Road. If successful, the ‘Meadows to George Street’ project aims to provide a major redesign for walking and cycling in the city, creating safe, coherent and attractive routes through the city centre. With over one third of people in Edinburgh cycling at least once a month and a total of 16.5 million bike journeys made annually, the implementation of strategic cycle infrastructure in a city centre location would potentially increase this level and encourage cycling as the favoured commute option city wide."

Dunno if it's the site in general or just me but search is borked and this detail has really been boilin' my noggin so I'll just ask: I've read a lot of the bigging up of the South Sub tram-train notion recently, especially of its comparatively low cost, but what I can't find is any details of how the actual tram and train linking up is supposed to work. There are vague allusions to "they'll join up at Murrayfield" but...how? The tramline is on the wrong side of Haymarket Depot and the Western Approach Road, it seems like linking the tram to the South Sub would require a complete rebuild of Murrayfield Station and significant demolition of the Blandfield Works site, plus the closure of Roseburn St(Murrayfield won't be happy about that) and work to lower it under the railway bridge(which would depend on the famously cooperative Network Rail...).

Which would be fine, but isn't really in line with the "cheap and easy" shtick that's being used to push the South Sub concept over other tram options for the city. Am I missing somewhere where this has been explained in detail in a way that makes it all line up?
