The difference is because of the different likelihoods.

Further south it's 'medium likelihood/medium impact' whereas up here its 'low likelihood/medium impact'

Looking at Ventusky there's a really sharp dividing line just south of Edinburgh (in the Ventusky model, at least) between total chaos and relative calm, so presumably the Met Office models show something similar and affect their assessment of the likelihood.

And where the wind warning in Scotland isn't amber, it's yellow. 60mph+ gusts forecast overnight tonight for Fairmilehead which is in the yellow warning area. At time of writing that's actually pretty much the same as the forecast for Dumfries, which is in the amber warning area. Go figure.

The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning in Scotland for heavy snow and blizzards causing some travel and power disruption. Up to 30 centimetres of snow could fall. An amber weather warning for wind has been issued for parts of northern England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday evening.

The problem is that without enforcement drivers will still go at the previous speed limit (and if anyone is foolish enough to actually follow the posted limit they will be tailgated and overtaken until they conform).

So hopefully part of that £1.6M budget is the installation of average speed cameras.

Meanwhile, the council can implement a speed-limit reduction, fOr saFteY (which was all that was needed in the first place)

For anyone twitchy about GDPR (or such like it) not being much mentioned in the introduction page, Sam replied to me:

I have no plans to make survey respondent's names or contact info more broadly available at any point; there would be no good reason to do so. It would have been better for me to make this explicit at the outset, I now realize, but in drafting the survey I suppose I'd hoped that providing the 'anonymous' option would have been sufficient.

“

In Aberdeen, Ian Yuill, co-leader of the city council, said that on Thursday there were 17 road gritters out, ploughs, 14 pavement gritters, 90 road staff, about 240 environmental services staff, and 31 diggers hired from contractors all shifting snow and treating roads and pavements.

According to the PA news agency, he told BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast on Friday

It’s a huge job. Our staff can’t be everywhere but they are working incredibly hard, and we have been gritting roads pretty much around the clock since this started.

One of the challenges that Aberdeen city council has had is because of the repeated snowfalls, our gritters and ploughs have had to go back time and time and time again to the priority routes in the city, and that has meant they haven’t been able to get on to secondary routes and side roads.

Hiring these diggers has allowed the council to move snow on side roads and start to tackle that problem.

There is still a long way to go. There is still an awful lot of snow lying on the streets and pavements of Aberdeen.

A week-long winter cold snap that would once have been normal in the Netherlands has caused more than 2,000 flight cancellations, chaos on roads and railways, buildings to partially collapse, and a stream of angry cyclists asking why roads seem better gritted than cycle lanes.

SURVEY OF BIKE COMMUTERS

Spokes has had a request from (US) cycling author Sam Tracy to publicise this survey for a planned book (not just USA, we think)

Question: do you get around by bike? Have any thoughts to share on the topic? If so, I’d love to hear from you!

I am writing a new book on bicycle transportation, to more fully document this everyday but easily overlooked experience—who’s riding; why we do so; how things tend to go. The few recent books on this topic tend to be academic, or first-person narratives; I hope to write one that better reflects broader numbers of bike commuters’ actual experiences. Beyond expanding the popular understanding, I want to capture a moment in time—for posterity, if we’re lucky, but foremost for the benefit of those around us who may be commute-curious. This book will invite any and all to join us in our daily journeys.

It’s not difficult nowadays to find advice on bike commuting: surprising numbers of people are happy to share their opinions. The mileage varies greatly, of course; from earnest suggestions or expressions of concern to the far simpler ‘get off the road.’ Yet moving beyond generalities—for or against—is harder. This project will canvas the participants themselves: to see what people are actually doing, and what we might learn.

Link to survey:-

“I note you avoided the zig zags by Megan/ ModaCity?“

Usually use if going east, though 50/50 with Torphicen/Morrison.

That’s the thing, ‘choices’

More coming, as u say.

Just not fast enough - or in much of a logical/prioritised way.

@chdot - we should be glad that it's not normal as only limited number of bike spaceson train and path network 'squeeze points'!;-)

I note you avoided the zig zags by Megan/ ModaCity?
For some (families in particular) on standard bikes this is better option as they can get across Dundee St at crossing and up to Leamington. Then along Rope Walkk to shop through pend to arrive at Viewforth Bridge.

Very soon there'll be a direct route from Leamington to bike crossing at Grove St. Handy for getting to Haymarket if you don't mind being out in traffic on Morrison St.
The patchwork network is increasing which is good.

According to the CycleStreets app (which allows multipoint route planning) I cycled about 15 miles around Edinburgh yesterday. (Used app afterwards).

Mostly on road with use of convenient sections of NEPN.

Fortunately I know Ed well enough to piece it all together in my head, but CycleStreets ‘knows’ complex (and unsigned…) routes like the one through the Dalry Colonies over the WGR to LaidBack.

I continued on to visit various shops and people in Morningside, Abbeyhill, Inverleith, Newhaven, Crewe Road South, then Waverley via Stockbridge.

I’m fit enough do that (probably) because I cycle. And I have a suitable bike (which most people could have).

I really couldn’t have done it by bus in any sensible time.

No idea how long it would have taken in a car, but the amount of traffic I filtered past or avoided by routes not available to motors was significant.

However

I am well aware that ‘most people’ wouldn’t cycle because of ‘fears’/amount of traffic etc.

As ‘we’ know, the cycling was fun, convenient and essentially ‘healthy’.

I was the only person on the train with a bike - reinforcing the idea it’s not normal…

Now is the time to get round from Thriepmuir to Harlaw Reservoir. All the potholes have been filled in and despite heavy rain, few puddles. I did it on a lunch time spin and what would have been a Woodstock style mudfest was very pleasant indeed

A landmark moment on the journey to autonomous driving is, again, just around the corner. This week, Waymo, which successfully runs robotaxis in San Francisco and four other US cities, announced it was bringing its cars to London.
