It's only 50 years since Edinburgh had a fairly extensive suburban rail network. Other lines (e.g. Balerno) had already been shut.

Many have now been converted into routes for other modes of transport.

A lot of the stations (at least the platforms) are still visible, though perhaps most walkers and cyclists don't know their names.

It's not possible to go train spotting, how about some station spotting? Tick them off as you travel through!

Here's one for train nerds (me included)...

There's a 'thing' at Northampton where one of the station staff has gone through the tickets relinquished at the station gates to see how many of 2,600 UK stations they have had a traveller from.

So far (after several years) they are at c.2,000 and have put them on a big display on the wall.

Someone has compiled a list of those missing

https://docs.google.com/file/d/180Q8_9sjMy8uXe5CC-rXJLQEy3EpwDqA/edit?usp=docslist_api&filetype=msexcel

By my reckoning there is still around 160 of the 360 Scottish stations unfilled.

Not a surprise that lots are missing but also surprising for some they already have, like Georgemas Junction, Dunrobbin Castle, Tyndrum Upper & Maybole to name a few...

Plenty of suburban Edinburgh Stations still do as well if anyone fancies a daytrip to Northampton sometime...

I'm dumping my old spinbike and have bought a virtual trainer which I'll use with my road bike.

Determined that when the spring comes round I'll be in better cycling shape for my 2 hour commute home - long distance walking and a wee bit mtb has been helping as well.

I don't like the look of Zwift, too gamey and I don't like people. I've been looking at Rouvy, what other options do folks reccomend?

I'd envisage 1-2 hour sessions probably once /twice a week in conjunction with the other stuff mentioned above.

One great thing about the Innocent from the top of the tunnel is the 'endless' slope.

On days like today (no wind), and in no particularly hurry, it's fun to enter tunnel down the slope, through the barrier, stop pedalling and glide.

Speed increases initially and gradually drop as you come alongside the back of Duddingston Loch.

I ran out of momentum here -

Am I going to ruin their trip? Is there a better route for people who don't do much urban cycling? I won't be able to go with them.

Apologies for a new thread but I can't find my original question!

Many thanks for the advice a few months back on cycling in the Netherlands, in particular, the advice to go via the dunes heading south from Ijmuiden.

We had planned a direct-ish route from the ferry to Gouda, but the route via the dunes was just beautiful. I'm sure the hot sunny weather helped the seaside route.

Apart from a bit of confusion leaving the port to get into/around haarlem, navigating was a doddle.

The weather, the infrastructure and the people we met all contributed to the six of us enjoying that first day's 100k through dunes, flower fields and along the banks of the Old Rhine so much, that we have already booked hotels for the start of the Giro in Holland next year.

Been doing a few overnight cycle camps including the Five Ferries route on the West Coast and last weekend up towards Loch Earn. Any good routes and camping spots from Edinburgh you would recommend?

Ideal would be up to 100km a day cycle on quiet roads or good quality cycle paths (25mm tyre friendly) with a decent camping spot near some water for cooking and a wild swim.

I'm sure everyone is familiar with the 1978 Rule Book and subsequent revisions including the 1983 abridged version which was withdrawn a year later owing to a series of errors in the Chaucer Gambit (advanced style), but I was wondering if anyone has ever seen an actual copy of the Edinburgh Rules, rather than it being passed on only by word of mouth?

Anyone like to join me in a lighthearted invoking of said Rules as pertaining to north, east, south and west Edinburgh? We can play Active Moves only, and remember, no circumventions using the M8 are allowed during Festival time.

Hi all, looking to start a thread for suggestions of good routes for cycling that are of reasonable distance and technical ability of kids. If anyone can add in their recommendations then that would be very much appreciated. Hilly routes, flat routes, mountain bike routes, pathed routes, single track, woods, riverside, any kind of fun route at all! And of course those that keep them away from drivists would be ideal. Thanks

I'm meeting my sister in Slovenia in April. We both cycle - about 30-40 miles a day upper limit & off-tarmac but not strewn with boulders/precipitous drops etc. We'd probably do day trips rather than a tour.

I've had a look at Slovenia and it looks like it's very good for cycling - plenty of cycle routes easy and hard. Has anyone done any cycling there?

Haven't checked out Slovakia as yet but doesn't look so good so may just stick to public transport sight-seeing.

I've not been to the East Fortune Museum of Flight airshow for a few years, so plan this year to ride out. Checking their 'Getting to the Show' details on the site there was nothing about bikes. Plenty of car directions, a train option to North Berwick, and buses for onward travel.

So I phoned up and asked if there was bike parking, or if I'd be able to take the bike in with me. "Good question," was the response.

To be fair to the guy he was very helpful and at worst I'll have to chain up to the railings beside the ticket entrance they set up. But he reckoned I'd be able to come through and chain up to the bike stands they have by the main visitor building. Just an odd omission when they're beside a lot of cycle routes and clearly do cater for cyclists the rest of the time.

Probably been mentioned somewhere here already but I couldn't find it quickly, and a new thread for the actual consultation is probably useful anyway.

The Scottish Government is currently consulting on ideas for a new national park, adding to the two existing ones (Loch Lomond and the Cairngorms).

They're asking not just about possible locations, but about what the criteria for picking the new one should be (so "Accessible by active travel" might be a suggestion).

I'll be in Eindhoven at the end of the month. Hoping to hire a bike one morning, and just cycle around for a few hours.

Anyone been before and done similar? Any advice—either on bike rental or routes/places to visit by bike? Kerb-nerdery definitely allowed (The Hovenring is already on the radar).

“

The Slow Road to Tehran: A Revelatory Bike Ride through Europe and the Middle East,

Rebecca Lowe

Cycling from London to Tehran, covering 11,000 kilometres and taking in 20 countries along the way, has plenty of ups (cathartic moments whizzing across Jordanian plains or twisting through Albania’s aptly-named Accursed Mountains) as well as downs:

…

Her idea is to capture everyday life, reporting on the “silent 99.9 per cent” who rarely make news bulletins, attempting to understand the connections between the West and this troubled region as she takes its temperature rolling on by.

…

In Istanbul, a dreadful city for cyclists with its chaotic dual-carriages and spaghetti-like streets (“almost entirely bike-proof”), locals open up about the tough policies of controversial President Recep Erdogan: “He’s a classic dictator. He steals our freedoms, then distracts everyone with big shiny things.

“

https://thecritic.co.uk/revolutions-and-revelations

“

From 2010-15, Rebecca was chief reporter at the International Bar Association, where she specialised in long-form features, filmed interviews and mini-documentaries on rule of law and human rights issues. Most recently, she wrote and directed a documentary on military impunity for human rights abuses in Myanmar.

…

She now specialises in the Middle East, with a focus on human rights. In 2015-16, she embarked on an ill-advised 11,000km, 20-country solo cycle ride from London to Tehran, via Europe, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Oman, the UAE and Iran. Her aim was to challenge people’s preconceptions by showing that a woman could cycle through the Middle East safely. At a time of increasing prejudice and division, her hope was to humanise the region by moving away from the usual stories about terrorists and conflict to those about everyday people. To gauge her success, visit her cycling website here.

Any one ridden the "Kips Bypass" runs down from the base of West Kip to Green Cluech? Oddly says cycling forbidden in kommute but I can't really see why given access codes, I've ran it before and can't think of reason that it would be dodgy on a mtb.
