"

Make Ride to the Sun your next cycling challenge. 100 miles through the night from England across the border to Scotland. Follow in the footsteps of the Roman legions who trudged the long road from Luguvalium (Carlisle) to the old garrison camp of Caer Amon (Cramond). Sol Invictus was the Roman God of the unconquered sun and was the Roman legionnaires guide through war and battle and it is with that spirit that we ride through the night to arrive for sunrise on Cramond beach, tired but unconquered!

"When Emily Chappell and I first started sharing ideas that would eventually become The Adventure Syndicate, they were all about celebrating attributes commonly associated with women but in a context more often seen as male-dominated. In short, we wanted to show the world what groups of strong, enduring, co-operative, caring people could achieve together in a sporting context where aggression, strength and speed usually dominate."

I've never managed to get my helmet to interact with a road surface or car, and sometimes I confess I lose track of why I wear it, other than for decorative effect.

Yesterday evening, I found out exactly what it is for. As I was cycling down the innocent path through niddrie looking forward to a lovely twilight ride, I came upon a couple of local youths who managed to launch a golf ball sized rock at my head which struck me with a massive thwack right in the front centre area of my helmet. I was impressed that they scored a direct hit and even more impressed that my helmet successfully prevented any serious damage to my skull.

It could have been very serious if it was even a bit lower, at least leading to some bloodshed and potentially to a scar or broken tooth.

Needless to say I took the road on the way back.

Just wondering... During yesterdays audax I hit a max HR of 189 (which I reckon is close to my actual maximum if not there) and my average over the whole run was 163bpm.
Now that seems a little high to me for a 5 or 6 hour session(?), my resting hr has come down since I started cycling to around 63ish (42yr old bloke) but whenever I hit a hill it seems to jump to 170 or higher?

So I thought it might be worthwhile, if there is anywhere in Central Scotland who offer the service, to maybe get a proper fitness assessment, you know the sort of thing, where they sick you on a bike and work out your VO2 etc.

Anyone had one? Know of such a place? Got opinions...?

Others might find this solar powered electric bike race from France to the Sahara and back interesting to follow .
Currently day nine and a Brit called Jack Butler currently in the lead on an Azub recumbent with a hub motor and solar tilting roof.He is putting up some great you tube video each day. Some epic battles with strong winds and cloudy days and incidents with the Guardia Civil
Very close behind is a Frenchman Jean-Marc in a velomobile who has suffered mechanicals and lack of sun going up over the Pyrenees.( think his velomobile with all the solar panels ,batteries etc.. is close to 90kg( not easy to crank up a mountain without the electric motor!) whereas Jack’s two wheel recumbent is about 45 kg all in)
Jack’s you tube channel is under his name Jack Butler and there is a Sun Trip website with tracking.
I find it much more interesting to follow than the Tour de France!

These days it's mostly associated with tricks and Trials, Transgression, Saughton and MacAskill.

It used to be a serious racing sport.

That's how Chris Hoy started.

I think this is the red remnant of the Hunters Hall BMX track.

Now it's an Olympic sport - but nowhere in the east of Scotland to try it or practice.

Anyone/friends/relations involved 'before' or like to see facilities now?

GCN+ has a new documentary about the stage of the Giro thst went over the Gavia in heavy snow in 1988. Quite an interesting watch. Andy Hampsten comes across as a nice guy - the only non-Italian interviewed!

“

By 15, she was representing Scotland in the triathlon, and then Great Britain. In endurance races, power-to-weight ratio is more important than overall strength, which is why she could often beat the best men.

She was on a high. Then, in her late teens, she fell to Earth. A technical change in triathlon rules meant that competitors had to be top swimmers to stand a chance of winning. As swimming was her weakest discipline of the three (cycling and running are the others), she was done for. Paterson missed out on the 2002 Commonwealth Games and retired. She began to loathe triathlon with the same passion she had loved it. “ I swore that I would never do another triathlon as long as I lived.”

TransAlba 2020 race postponed to 2022 has started this morning (3rd of July).

There is at least one Edinburgh-based Audaxer in the mix (Angus Doig)

Tracker:
https://www.transalbarace.com/copy-of-social

They will be on the Lang Whang about 300km, turning at the Kirknewton Airfield.
Perhaps a bit late for my bedtime to go and wave them.
