A similar pattern of voting next year could mean the SNP is once again the party with the most seats on the council. But unlike the situation after the last local elections in 2022 the Greens could have enough seats for the two parties to form a coalition with an overall majority.

Yeah City Deal - glasgow is really using this money to rejuvenate the entire centre of Glasgow. Admittedly more run down than Centre of Embra. Oh I recall the Southbridge with the Scientologists trying to trip you in the Street and the people with fleas shopping in WEWW [or Wattys as it was also called in the east]

I must correct myself in terms of Glagow - SNP run a minority led administration in Glasgow though they have the most seats and have done so since 2017. Glasgow Council Created in 1996 and Labour led until 2017.. I am not sure if many of the current projects have had EDINBURGH style 15 year lead ins or if they are more recent. The current sustainable transport initiatives in Glasgow are wide in their scope. THe City Deal funds the Avenues project which is putting in segregated infra in 16? City Centre roads. Meanwhile Edinburgh can only feck up George St. THe Avenues is only one off the Glasgow projects.

I do think the stagnation in Edinburgh is because Labour are running the show in a tiny number of seats. Shame as CCWEL is great as is the WoL path, Russell Road to nearly Canal and the towpath itself.

But the Avenues project is causing major disruption in the centre of Glasgow to people trying to drive cars and this is a bold decision the minority administration are pushing through with the icing on the cake Being their favoured position of dismantling the M8 which in fact wasnt even put to them as an option by Transport Scotland in the first instance. So Glasgow are Miles Better

Premier League football (England and Scotland) is quite boringly predictable when it comes to league positions.**

Of course Hearts could have won the league title but if you add up the player 'values' then the cost of one Celtic player equates to half the Hearts team.
Despite that the Gorgie side held both Glasgow teams off for months till yesterday when they achieved a 'most accomplished runners up' award amid a chaotic pitch invasion at Parkhead.

The entitlement of 'old firm' fans* and their Glasgow media fanboys infuriates me. For months the talk was that they might not win the trophy this year and how they could close the gap to Hearts (how dare they compete!). Celtic & Ranger fans suffered months of mental anguish at the hands of Hearts with manager Derek McInnes.... but with piles of money and the return of Martin O'Neill as manager it all came right in the end. Yawn.

* Similar to 'hard pressed motorists'.
** mcairney - no offence to Hibees intended!

Well 3 years on since this thread was started

Obviously it hasn’t happened (obviously “yet” is still true)

Talking to various people, I’m led to believe that work is still going on (both by CEC staff and also external experts)

Also that senior officials want it to happen, but don’t know (neither does anyone else!) what the political situation will be when the work is ‘finished’

Part of the reason for no apparent action is that the last ‘window’ for implementing significant chance closed as it got ‘too close to the election’… (next May)

Whether the new Cllrs are more or less interested/supportive/hostile is wholly unknown!

Whether Parties explicitly are for or against or don’t even care enough to mention in their election material is also unknown

If anyone here is interested, some degree of lobbying in the coming months would perhaps be useful - presumably there will be politicians at PoP

Apart from money (a perpetual problem), the main unknown is whether officers will (eventually) recommend a ‘do a lot, quickly’ approach or (more normal for Edinburgh) in stages/tinkering - and if they do, will TEC want to or be allowed (politically) to approve the plan

Top of the list is probably still the Cowgate

If that is done as an initial/sole project the question would be WHY WASN'T IT DONE YEARS AGO!

I'm a big Hibs fan (season ticket holder) and after proclaiming it would be the worst thing ever even I'm warming to the idea, particularly after the events of the Celtic-Motherwell game.

The howls of anguish from the glory-hunting Celtic supporters across Scotland will probably dampen the pain of our greatest rivals winning if it does happen.

One thing that is clear is that this is the best opportunity a non Old-Firm team has of winning the league even in my lifetime (I'm too young to remember when Aberdeen won it!).

So good luck to the 90% of Hearts fans who are good honest football fans!

I'm thinking this is a bit like the Queen's funeral procession?

We should attend because it's a historic event, not because we're football fans (or royalists)?

“
There could be major disruption to city centre streets on Sunday. Princes Street and much of the West End could be closed to all traffic from 10am and 9pm - if Hearts win the men's football Scottish Premiership title on Saturday.

“Will be interesting to see if she, Simita Kumar and Kate Campbell follow suit“

I’m told SNP councillors probably won’t stand down ‘because by-elections’

And they will also “donate saleries” - whatever that means in practice!

Kayleigh Kinross O'Neill apparently being subbed for today at TRO Sub due to election as MSP.

Will be interesting to see if she, Simita Kumar and Kate Campbell follow suit from Sanne Djeskstra-Downie's dual mandate - where she has said in the press she doesn't want to trigger a by-election, can do both roles and is legally allowed to under dual mandate decision in 2025 as she was elected within 372 days of the next Council election.

https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/elections-voting/upcoming-elections

(Nothing to see here - yet)

Ok, early, only just had SP election

Not had PoP

And TODAY another meeting about Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route

BUT (and because of ‘recent’ events, general politics etc)

Needs thinking about

Seems recently elected MSPs will not be resigning as CEC Cllrs, so no imminent byelections

Obviously Spokes will be on the case and will prepare a good policies doc/wishlists etc

But, of course “Spokes” is just People/volunteers

So more thinking the better

Ideas for policies, (actually no, CEC has too many…), implementation (or lack of), missing links, poor surfacing/maintenance etc.

‘We’ have done wishlists in the past, mostly for Transport convenors, but a ward by ward list would be useful

Nearly a year to jot down things and combine them all at a later date…

Obviously not just about ‘cycling’ - pavements, crossing times, more accesses to path networks, ramps as well as steps, more benches etc are important in a city that (allegedly) wants to increase walking and cycling and discourage car use
