There are CCE threads on GSt & PSt.

Now there seems to be the need for an ‘all embracing one’…

“

Transport and environment convener Stephen Jenkinson said he had now asked officials to come up with a new strategy, embracing Princes Street, George Street, the "cross streets" running between them, and St Andrew Square and Charlotte Square.

He said: "All the projects are linked. We need a masterplan, potentially bringing together all the city centre projects into a programme of works to be considered by the committee.

“

This could have gone in the "tram latest" thread but that would be the wrong place - in spite of the headline!

http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/fears-edinburgh-bus-fare-rise-to-fund-tram-extension-1-4082100

"

Bus stops in Princes Street will be reshuffled with the aim of reducing delays and speeding up journey times.

"

(And other things.)

I've been a member of Edinburgh's 'City Car Club' for a good long time. More recently it became 'Enterprise Car Club'. I'm going to ask for comments on here because I'd assume that members of this forum are probably over-represented in being members of the Car Club.

How are they doing now that they are well established as 'Enterprise Car Club'?

As would be expected, as would be reasonable, they are going to start to do things in new ways. I'm currently encountering their newish and relatively restrictive process for validating a licence - but I think I've understood it...

However in looking for comments on this I've also come across at least one website with a host of very negative comments, from people who feel they have been charged for damage they didn't cause. Given that the Internet can magnify certain things above others - in this case inevitably magnifying negative over positive - I'm cautious about putting too much trust in these... but on the other hand they have the ring of truth about them. They feel like the kind of comments I'd expect to see about your average car hire company... and I long ago learned to be very careful with hiring from some companies, making sure that every little scratch was recorded and so on.

Generally I've been more relaxed with the car club, trusting that they treated these cars just a little bit more flexibly (recognising that it wouldn't ever be easy to pin blame down for minor dents and scratches) - but I'm wondering whether it's time to start to treat this like any other hire... being really careful to record absolutely every scratch and dent, no matter how tiny, viewing the car in daylight and so on... and with that in mind whether the whole thing may become too much of a hassle.

Any thoughts from other club members? This matters for a bike riding community in a car-centric city...

Hey folks, I'm embarking on a wee project and looking at building up a list of Art Deco architecture in the city that I'll have a trip around with the camera.

Looking to add to the list I've just started:

Lothian House
St Andrew's House
Learmonth Court
Ravelston Garden
Craigmillar White House
Coburg House
Causewayside Garage
Old Castlebrae School and Church

There must be loads of examples out there, and I can pretty much guarantee this is the place to ask.

This has been mentioned various times on here - not least because of the extravagant 'completion' date.

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/downloads/id/1893/edinburgh_waterfront_promenade_design_code

Of course large sections already exist - at each end.

There are also various piecemeal bits in between.

Perhaps there should a CCE study tour one day (or two). Cramond to the Haven Cafe then, the rest.

Today I happened to be down at Granton. There are some (maybe) connecting bits - with various degrees of accessibility.

https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/elections-voting/upcoming-elections

(Nothing to see here - yet)

Ok, early, only just had SP election

Not had PoP

And TODAY another meeting about Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route

BUT (and because of ‘recent’ events, general politics etc)

Needs thinking about

Seems recently elected MSPs will not be resigning as CEC Cllrs, so no imminent byelections

Obviously Spokes will be on the case and will prepare a good policies doc/wishlists etc

But, of course “Spokes” is just People/volunteers

So more thinking the better

Ideas for policies, (actually no, CEC has too many…), implementation (or lack of), missing links, poor surfacing/maintenance etc.

‘We’ have done wishlists in the past, mostly for Transport convenors, but a ward by ward list would be useful

Nearly a year to jot down things and combine them all at a later date…

Obviously not just about ‘cycling’ - pavements, crossing times, more accesses to path networks, ramps as well as steps, more benches etc are important in a city that (allegedly) wants to increase walking and cycling and discourage car use

" A teenager caught driving at 120mph on a dual carriageway has avoided a driving ban

His excuse was that he was “running late” for a football match, even though the offence occurred at 6am.

Appealing for him not to be banned, she said Hopwood was a product support worker with Astrak and his workplace is 30 miles from his home.

“If he lost his licence it would mean a daily trip of three-and-a-half hours on public transport, which would be a major inconvenience,” said the solicitor.

He also needed his licence to take family members to church, she added."

OK bit of a loaded question - can't be too many people on here who don't like trees.

There's another one down on the Roseburn Path.

Some time ago Sustrans advocated a serious bit of felling/pruning there - partly because of the 'autumn leaf problem'.

One reason that trees fall over is that they have become 'too big' for their root system which is having to deal with the (artificial) embankment (cutting).

It may well be a good idea to have some selective felling of big trees and 'rationalisation' of smaller ones trying to fight their way to the top of the canopy.

Obviously decisions should be made taking into account individual trees/species/locations - rather than a 'clear fell and start again' policy.

Fortunately that is likely to be too expensive, given CEC's resources for what they now seem to be calling Natural Heritage.

I'm sure 'we' value this mini woodland more than we curse the leaf sludge every year.

Of course a bit of extra cleanup would help - new Tarmac and some drainage suggest that CEC might be beginning to take more care of its off-road network. What next, proper gritting??

Klaxon on "Granton Harbour Masterplan"

I wish the press, when reporting on planning matters, would put the references in a footnote. It makes looking for the real story much harder.

16/05618/AMC - Granton Harbour redevelopment masterplan - was approved on Thursday

There is a raft of conditions, the most notable of which is (9) the provision of a 5 metre shared use path along Lower Granton Road with pedestrian and cycle priority over side roads.

Reported in the Herald is a 'clash over tram proposals' - rather - it's a footnote saying the approved masterplan doesn't properly consider interactions with the tram route and these concerns should be addressed in future individual planning applications.

Will this masterplan be built, or forgotten to time like most of them? Just need to wait and see...

According to the latest Meadows and Morningside Green News the NHS wish to discourage people from using the AA as a walking/cycling route.

See page 2 here:

http://www.edinburghgreens.org.uk/site/wp-content/files/MM-Spring-2012-web-version.pdf

The two vehicle gates off South Oswald road have been closed for some months although you can still get through a pedestrian gate.

You can email Melanie.main@scottishgreens.org.uk if you want to comment on this.

Interesting observation: we've walked through the AA frequently over the last five years and I've seen few cyclists in that time. I've never seen any cyclists using the Cluny Drive access until the last two days when I've seen five bikes heading that way. Is this a coincidence?

There could be major disruption to city centre streets on Sunday. Princes Street and much of the West End could be closed to all traffic from 10am and 9pm - if Hearts win the men's football Scottish Premiership title on Saturday.

I’d love to hear from folks about what they understand the role and remit of the TRO Sub-committee to be, including what it can and can’t do. I’ll post more thoughts on yesterday’s meeting at a later point but they seemed to be e.g. asking for implementation costs as part of making an ETRO permanent and it felt out of scope?

“

In Edinburgh, there’s an inbuilt conservatism and a natural suspicion of anything new. I have quite a lot of sympathy with that, to be honest.

…

If anything’s new, it’s met with a degree of scepticism. Then once it’s been around for a few years, it becomes part of the furniture.

Well I think we need a separate thread

The past

The future, mostly unwritten of course.

Cllr/Dr. A manages to create scepticism about what he means/says

Says a lot of ‘the right things’ then <strike>contradicts</strike> nuances.

As mentioned on the election thread, the good/bad news is only intends to be transport chair for three months
