https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/elections-voting/upcoming-elections

(Nothing to see here - yet)

Ok, early, only just had SP election

Not had PoP

And TODAY another meeting about Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route

BUT (and because of ‘recent’ events, general politics etc)

Needs thinking about

Seems recently elected MSPs will not be resigning as CEC Cllrs, so no imminent byelections

Obviously Spokes will be on the case and will prepare a good policies doc/wishlists etc

But, of course “Spokes” is just People/volunteers

So more thinking the better

Ideas for policies, (actually no, CEC has too many…), implementation (or lack of), missing links, poor surfacing/maintenance etc.

‘We’ have done wishlists in the past, mostly for Transport convenors, but a ward by ward list would be useful

Nearly a year to jot down things and combine them all at a later date…

Obviously not just about ‘cycling’ - pavements, crossing times, more accesses to path networks, ramps as well as steps, more benches etc are important in a city that (allegedly) wants to increase walking and cycling and discourage car use

There could be major disruption to city centre streets on Sunday. Princes Street and much of the West End could be closed to all traffic from 10am and 9pm - if Hearts win the men's football Scottish Premiership title on Saturday.

chdot on "Trees - good or bad?"

OK bit of a loaded question - can't be too many people on here who don't like trees.

There's another one down on the Roseburn Path.

Some time ago Sustrans advocated a serious bit of felling/pruning there - partly because of the 'autumn leaf problem'.

One reason that trees fall over is that they have become 'too big' for their root system which is having to deal with the (artificial) embankment (cutting).

It may well be a good idea to have some selective felling of big trees and 'rationalisation' of smaller ones trying to fight their way to the top of the canopy.

Obviously decisions should be made taking into account individual trees/species/locations - rather than a 'clear fell and start again' policy.

Fortunately that is likely to be too expensive, given CEC's resources for what they now seem to be calling Natural Heritage.

I'm sure 'we' value this mini woodland more than we curse the leaf sludge every year.

Of course a bit of extra cleanup would help - new Tarmac and some drainage suggest that CEC might be beginning to take more care of its off-road network. What next, proper gritting??

There are CCE threads on GSt & PSt.

Now there seems to be the need for an ‘all embracing one’…

“

Transport and environment convener Stephen Jenkinson said he had now asked officials to come up with a new strategy, embracing Princes Street, George Street, the "cross streets" running between them, and St Andrew Square and Charlotte Square.

He said: "All the projects are linked. We need a masterplan, potentially bringing together all the city centre projects into a programme of works to be considered by the committee.

I’d love to hear from folks about what they understand the role and remit of the TRO Sub-committee to be, including what it can and can’t do. I’ll post more thoughts on yesterday’s meeting at a later point but they seemed to be e.g. asking for implementation costs as part of making an ETRO permanent and it felt out of scope?

In Edinburgh, there’s an inbuilt conservatism and a natural suspicion of anything new. I have quite a lot of sympathy with that, to be honest.

…

If anything’s new, it’s met with a degree of scepticism. Then once it’s been around for a few years, it becomes part of the furniture.

Well I think we need a separate thread

Looks like the council are about to close half their remaining public toilets. This is after closing quite a few already and losing all the automated toilets as they were funded on a discontinued advertising contract.

Portobello seems to be the worst affected with all three toilets earmarked for closure. This is a huge problem for the city but a big issue for cyclists passing along this popular route, particularly those on Bath St and at the sewage pumping station on the Joppa end of the prom.

Portobello community council have a survey up about this and it would be great if you can comment in the hope we can save the toilets

Argyle House in Castle Terrace meets the criteria for being designated a building “of special architectural or historic interest”, according to Scottish Government agency Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

But it looks unlikely to be granted protection from proposed demolition because HES does not list buildings where a development proposal is already being advanced.

There is a raft of conditions, the most notable of which is (9) the provision of a 5 metre shared use path along Lower Granton Road with pedestrian and cycle priority over side roads.

Reported in the Herald is a 'clash over tram proposals' - rather - it's a footnote saying the approved masterplan doesn't properly consider interactions with the tram route and these concerns should be addressed in future individual planning applications.

Will this masterplan be built, or forgotten to time like most of them? Just need to wait and see...

“

Equality and Poverty

6.1 The Council often gets asked to consider, celebrate and recognise other holidays,
whether religious, ceremonial, or ad hoc. It is important that any decision ensures
consistency and fairness in our approach.

Climate and Nature Emergencies

6.2 There is a mixed climate and nature impact of this decision. There will be reduced
travel, commuting and energy usage in Council facilities and workplaces. However,
there may be increased consumption across waste and hospitality consumptions.

Environmental Impacts

6.3 As above, a national public holiday, which includes closing schools and non-
essential council services reduces the number of cars and public transport journeys
for that day. Conversely the gathering of people at home or in pubs to watch the
match, may increase household energy consumption (TVs, cooling, heating) during
the day. Increased use of hospitality venues could lead to higher waste production,
although this might be offset by the reduction in office waste.

Another good thing in the Scottish Government's announcements yesterday was the introduction of Low Emission Zones, which should mean that anything but the cleanest vehicles will have to pay £££ to enter these areas. I would hope that will stimulate some real change in the city centre.

Does anyone know the extent of the proposed Edinburgh LEZ?

There is also concern among residents and business owners that the road closure has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour, with teenagers on electric bikes wreaking havoc, and even crime.

“People have been telling me about a rise in teens going around on electric bikes, as this road closure has really helped them as the police can’t chase after them, they are using this closure as an escape route from getting caught,” said Emma.

Just come across this -

“

City Scope is a modern civic tech platform designed to make local planning applications understandable, accessible, and transparent. Built in Edinburgh, City Scope combines live planning data, AI-generated summaries, and intuitive design to help citizens, professionals, and communities stay informed about how their neighbourhoods are changing.

“

Fantastic deputation today at Edinburgh council’s Transport & Environment committee from Royal Park Terrace residents

They’re asking for a modal filter* in their street to prevent rat-running - a street that includes a school & care home & suffers from intrusive traffic trying to bypass London Rd

“

https://bsky.app/profile/blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk/post/3mdkmu2baxk2j

“

*a “modal filter” is a strategic closure to through motor traffic, that allows people walking or cycling to pass

They are low-cost & highly effective - shown to cut vehicle movements and crashes by 50%, as well as reducing street crime, pollution & noise

They simply make neighbourhoods better!

“
