The original aim of the organisers, the British Cycling Bureau, was largely to encourage sales of new bikes, but many of the more interesting events have been organised by Friends of the Earth groups in various parts of Britain.</p> <p>F.o.E. is, of course, more interested in bikes as a means of transport, not just as street corner, kids' status symbols. In Edinburgh they organised a "Bike Clinic" at the Leith Festival, showing people how to maintain and repair their<br /> trusty steeds.</p> <p>This year F.o.E. thought that it would be a good idea to organise a sponsored cycle ride away from the main roads.
