Gembo asks...
"one of the main factors in my quite good knowledge of Edinburgh and ok knowledge of the byways of the Lothians is The Spokes Maps. - not sure how I can work that up into a prize winning entry?"

Cheeky suggestion...
How about this as your first sentence...

This is 1977 before Spokes

“

After a week of severe traffic disruption caused by the Royal Circus and the Garden Party set, it is interesting to relate the attempts to celebrate Jubilee Bicycle Week (June 5-11).

National Bicycle Week has been a sadly neglected event in the past few years (the change of name was inevitable for this year). The original aim of the organisers, the British Cycling Bureau, was largely to encourage sales of new bikes, but many of the more interesting events have been organised by Friends of the Earth groups in various parts of Britain.

F.o.E. is, of course, more interested in bikes as a means of transport, not just as street corner, kids' status symbols. In Edinburgh they organised a "Bike Clinic" at the Leith Festival, showing people how to maintain and repair their
trusty steeds.

This year F.o.E. thought that it would be a good idea to organise a sponsored cycle ride away from the main roads. Part of the proposed route was from Slateford to Balerno along the track bed of the old Baler.no railway line, which is free ol motor traffic and meanders pleasantly beside the Water of Leith,

The police were contacted for their comments: "Not possible they said, It's against the by. laws" (the route is, of course, in daily use by people travelling to and from work). Well, how about some sort of rally in the city centre?

The man in the Chief Constable's office just said that they'd do every. thing in their power to stop it.

It seems that jubilee disruption is only all right if the Queen is actually in the middle of it.

Glasgow, fortunately, has more co-operative police - there's to be a rally in the centre on Saturday the 4th. Details from Janie Tucker at
041-339 5614.

Edinburgh's Friends of the Earth Group is contenting itself with a leisurely 20 mile country ride Sunday the 5th, probably starting at The Meadows. Details fro Ainslie Place, 031-225 7752. All riders welcome - see you there.

Spokes is currently considering its long term future -

“

*Sept 9 Spokes AGM and discussion of becoming a SCIO

The 2026 Spokes AGM will be held in the Studio at the Augustine United Church (below the Sanctuary where we have our public meetings) on Weds 9th September, evening.

As well as standard AGM reports on activity and finances, members will consider whether Spokes should become a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) and therefore change from being a constituted organisation to a charity.

There will also be a short performance about cycling and a discussion about Spokes priorities. More information about the AGM and the SCIO proposal will be sent out to members in advance of the AGM.
