chdot on "2026 SP/Holyrood election (and prospects for PoP)"

OK this is really a holding page as there’s so much fallout from yesterday’s election to live through before anything becomes clear!

I was surprised to find there isn’t an actual date beyond ‘a Thursday in May’.

I think a 2026 Pedal on Parliament is VITAL.

There was no 2024 PoP because not enough people came forward to organise one.

For ‘26 there are ‘new’ people keen to make it happen.

Key people from past PoPs are willing to pass on their knowledge/expertise and some may offer actual help in a much more limited way than previously.

This is most encouraging.

It is COMPLETELY understandable that people who have put in a LOT of (volunteer) work are unwilling to do it again.

PoP did ‘shift the dial’.

Attitudes did change - sometimes grudgingly.

PoP started before “Climate” was much of a thing, “Emergency” was Fire/.Police/Ambulance.

‘Traffic calming’ was, mostly, not particularly controversial.

‘15 Minute Cities’ almost unheard of.

It’s not (just) about cycling.

It’s about people, cities, towns, neighbourhoods, countryside, mobility, less car ‘normality’, etc

So, save the date (when it emerges), turn up at The Meadows for a joyful ride to Holyrood.

Think about being involved in the organisation - on the day or in advance.

Save the date! We're bringing POP back to the streets of Edinburgh on Saturday 23rd April. We're still discussing the route and start point with the council but one thing we are aiming for is a slightly later start (1pm) to allow more feeder rides from slightly further away.

https://pedalonparliament.org/save-the-date-pedal-on-parliament-2022/

As always, there will be need for people to help out with marshalling, flyering and generally spreading the word. I'm having to take a step back from the organising this year but Alexrob of this parish and Chris Russell (not sure if he's on here?) and NiallA will be leading the charge

Wed 29 October 19.00 Quaker meeting house

Pasting details below from FB. Some of you may, like me, have loved Tim's trip reports from North Africa, Georgia and elsewhere. His pictures and descriptions of the scenery and the food were always amazing.

Ride for Tim
In August 2025 we cycled from Land's End to John o' Groats in memory of our friend Tim, who tragically took his life earlier in the year.

This event is a chance to share stories from the LEJOG ride as well as talk about cycling and mental health, and pay tribute to Tim. It's in aid of the three charities we raised money for during the ride: Mind, Sustrans and Flight Free UK. The event is free to attend but you will be encouraged to make a donation to the fundraiser! The fundraiser is here: https://givewheel.com/fundraising/6774/ride-for-tim/

We will have a few speakers, some who knew Tim, some who were on the ride, and some who work professionally in mental health and cycling.

The website for the ride gives a bit of background to Tim and the charities, and there's a diary of the journey as well: https://timcyclesthecoast.com/

MOTHERLOAD - CARGOBIKES IN EDINBURGH: - SPOKES MEETING

Where: Augustine United Church 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EL
Date: Tuesday 2 September

Time Starts: 7.15, Ends 9.30. Doors open 6.30 for coffee, stalls and chat, including a special stall to join Spokes or renew your membership.

Cargobikes are seen more and more in Edinburgh, and the potential is massive, as in many European cities and elsewhere around the world. Our public meeting on 2 September will feature the 90-minute documentary film MOTHERLOAD – a mother’s experience of how cargo bikes can be an antidote to the increasing isolation, disconnection, and planetary impact of life in C21. The meeting will then hear from local organisations in the forefront of cargobike development in Edinburgh.

“Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Motherhood was challenging, but to Liz hauling babies via car felt stifling. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.”
The film has now appeared in over 600 venues around the globe, making the case for cargobikes – and not just for families, but for a wide range of transport purposes worldwide.

Speakers
After the film there will be short presentations (5 mins or less each) from several local organisations using cargobikes, including…

The Bike Station – continuing the work of former CargoBikeMovement

Banzai [Bruntsfield Area Net Zero Action Initiative] – runs a cargobike library

Porty Community Energy – runs a cargobike library

Cycling Gardeners of Edinburgh – a small business using cargobikes as their main form of transport [photo below]
Then a QA with the speakers panel – due to the 90-minute film, the QA is likely only to be 30 minutes rather than our usual hour.

There’s been three documented crashes involving a driver hitting a cyclist this August.

They happened in the same week. This is unacceptable. We’re going to ride in protest of Edinburgh’s indifference toward cyclists this Friday 22nd August at 7pm. Meet at Middle Meadow Walk. Tell and bring everyone you know. See you there!

A thread dedicated to the joy of first sighting a swift over the City of Edinburgh each year and knowing that the summer migrants are all here.

Not a competition, just a place to share that feeling when your heart skips a beat at the sight of a tiny black crescent or the sound of otherworldly aerial screeching.

Also a thread for sharing the sadness of realising that the swifts have gone, but we'll come to that later shall we?

I've organised 2 bike buses for my sons' primary school (Davidson's Mains) recently. Up the road, Blackhall Primary organised their first bus this morning (Friday 14th June) - I went up to help marshall, and we had a really large and sunny ride around Ravelston and Blackhall, which was great. Earlier in the week I had a chat with a couple of parents from Corstorphine Primary, and they are hoping to organise something like a simultaneous bike and walking bus from different parts of their catchment.

With Sciennes and Gillespie's (and others?), it's starting to feel to me like we have the beginnings of a network of events around Edinburgh, and I wondered whether it might be useful to link up in some way - a Facebook group, Slack group or similar? Something like that might be useful to swap hints, war stories, requests for help, etc etc. It would be great to popularise this and get more schools involved...

Anyway, thought I would punt this out to the wider CCE collective to generate some wisdom...
