“
The bicycle, more than any other object, represents the perfect fusion of ingenuity, elegance and passion, values deeply rooted in Italian culture. The Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is proud to present a temporary exhibition that aims to recount the history and identity of Italian cycling.

The free exhibition, which will run from 11th June – 16th July, features 12 significant bicycles, including 6 historic models from the Madonna del Ghisallo Cycling Museum Collection. Also 6 models on loan from Italian companies that have shaped the history of cycling. Among the bicycles on display will be an early 20th-century Bianchi racing bike with a block brake and a Legnano bike ridden by Gino Bartali in the 1938 Tour de France.

A thread dedicated to the joy of first sighting a swift over the City of Edinburgh each year and knowing that the summer migrants are all here.

Not a competition, just a place to share that feeling when your heart skips a beat at the sight of a tiny black crescent or the sound of otherworldly aerial screeching.

Also a thread for sharing the sadness of realising that the swifts have gone, but we'll come to that later shall we?

OK this is really a holding page as there’s so much fallout from yesterday’s election to live through before anything becomes clear!

I was surprised to find there isn’t an actual date beyond ‘a Thursday in May’.

I think a 2026 Pedal on Parliament is VITAL.

There was no 2024 PoP because not enough people came forward to organise one.

For ‘26 there are ‘new’ people keen to make it happen.

Key people from past PoPs are willing to pass on their knowledge/expertise and some may offer actual help in a much more limited way than previously.

This is most encouraging.

It is COMPLETELY understandable that people who have put in a LOT of (volunteer) work are unwilling to do it again.

PoP did ‘shift the dial’.

Attitudes did change - sometimes grudgingly.

PoP started before “Climate” was much of a thing, “Emergency” was Fire/.Police/Ambulance.

‘Traffic calming’ was, mostly, not particularly controversial.

‘15 Minute Cities’ almost unheard of.

It’s not (just) about cycling.

It’s about people, cities, towns, neighbourhoods, countryside, mobility, less car ‘normality’, etc

So, save the date (when it emerges), turn up at The Meadows for a joyful ride to Holyrood.

Think about being involved in the organisation - on the day or in advance.

I think I mentioned this on Friday but Mark 'Sparkles' of Ace Bikes and Vanelli is currently around halfway through his JOGLEJOG record attempt. 2700Km of riding in just under 5 days!
A couple of wee wobbles today but now making good progress and not far off the record pace.
You can track his progress at:

For those who know/don’t know/don’t care -

CCE people have been meeting in ‘real life’ for ever

There have always been people here who knew each (before CCE) due to ‘cycle campaigning’, work or many other parts of Edinburgh’s layered life

However, early on, it was realised that there was a desire to clock some of the faces behind the usernames.

The last Friday of the month was suggested as a good, (pre-work), time

So the hunt for an early opening cafe was on

Peter’s Yard (now renamed) seemed ideal - early opening, location and massive table

Other venues have been sampled, inc canal barges

PY remained the staple until the opening of Canopy at the top of MMW (Middle Meadow Walk - where Critical Mass and PoP start!)

The CCE Coffee’n’Chat Meet in May is on the eve of PoP

It’s little surprise that many participants in PostPY are active in PoP

CCE didn’t start PoP but without many of its associates, it would never have started or kept going

Like the rest of life, things were upended/altered by Covid - including PoP (some people ‘retired’ having done a fantastic job - and left a legacy and template), CCE gatherings have been altered by a reduced need to start so early and fewer people rushing off to a desk!

If you haven’t been, come along, ok coffee, comfy seats indoors (though May’s event will be outside in the sun…) and friendly people who tend to ride bikes

There will be some chat about what needs to be done on the (PoP) day

BUT you don’t need to wait until the day before to offer your services

There are still spaces for Marshalls

Enquire/offer your services here -

This is the current, provisional, status (29.4.26)

All are likely to run (most have done so in previous years), other ones are possible.

If you’ve been on one before or something like Critical Mass you’ll know how it works - stick together and ride in a fashion that is safe for you and everyone else.

There needs to be someone at the front who knows the route and someone at the back to make sure no one gets left behind (unless they decide to or have an unfixable bike problem).

Pace is to suit the slowest not the fastest.

THIS IS EMAIL FROM PoP TO PROSPECTIVE ORGANISERS

(Email address at bottom if you want to help or are planning a ride that’s not on the map - maybe you could get people together for a short ride to a planned starting point?)

“
Pedal on Parliament 2026

We’d love to see your organisation running a Feeder ride!

Pedal on Parliament 2026 rides from Middle Meadow Walk to Holyrood, 11:30am on 30th May 2026.

In the next week, we’ll have our poster/flyering printing done, and our updated manifesto launched.

Feeder rides from all over Edinburgh, and beyond, make a big difference to help less confident folks participate in the ride, as well as being a fun way for everyone to travel in. While Pedal on Parliament is not responsible for these rides, we want to ensure that we support and resource those running them as best as we can.

We’re not asking you to run a formal ‘led ride’ - simply to offer moral (and potentially mechanical!) support for folks to ride in together. It’s great if feeder rides can aim to use as much off-road and protected cycle infrastructure as possible along the way to help make the ride as family-friendly as possible, but we also welcome feeder rides that are explicitly following a road route and we can be open about their suitability when listing them online.

What we can offer

We are:

Centrally plotting proactive contact with a number of organisations and supporters around the city who have run feeder rides previously, or who are well placed to contribute;

Able to help make suggestions about routes, and tying in with other groups we’ve heard might be running a feeder ride;

Asking that some of our marshals try and join their local feeder ride to support it en-route

Promoting feeder rides for 2026 on our website (update soon) and social media

What we need from you

In four stages:

Expression of interest; confirm to hello@pedalonparliament.org that you’re able to run a feeder ride on 30th May, with the aim to arrive at the Meadows around 11am

Your expected route; we’re asking that everyone plots their route using Komoot and shares it with us, which should allow us to gather these routes into a collection there but also for participants to fully understand the way in — and also lets us spot opportunities for feeder rides to pick up others along the way;

Other details; the point you’re gathering at (landmarks are good!), the time you’re expecting to leave, and any other considerations for your specific ride;

Promotion: promoting your feeder ride also helps promote PoP26; we can provide some graphics for social media use and / or any RSVP-able online event you might use to track potential attendees.

If you have any questions or concerns, just drop us a line on hello@pedalonparliament.org

Save the date! We're bringing POP back to the streets of Edinburgh on Saturday 23rd April. We're still discussing the route and start point with the council but one thing we are aiming for is a slightly later start (1pm) to allow more feeder rides from slightly further away.

https://pedalonparliament.org/save-the-date-pedal-on-parliament-2022/

As always, there will be need for people to help out with marshalling, flyering and generally spreading the word. I'm having to take a step back from the organising this year but Alexrob of this parish and Chris Russell (not sure if he's on here?) and NiallA will be leading the charge

Wed 29 October 19.00 Quaker meeting house

Pasting details below from FB. Some of you may, like me, have loved Tim's trip reports from North Africa, Georgia and elsewhere. His pictures and descriptions of the scenery and the food were always amazing.

Ride for Tim
In August 2025 we cycled from Land's End to John o' Groats in memory of our friend Tim, who tragically took his life earlier in the year.

This event is a chance to share stories from the LEJOG ride as well as talk about cycling and mental health, and pay tribute to Tim. It's in aid of the three charities we raised money for during the ride: Mind, Sustrans and Flight Free UK. The event is free to attend but you will be encouraged to make a donation to the fundraiser! The fundraiser is here: https://givewheel.com/fundraising/6774/ride-for-tim/

We will have a few speakers, some who knew Tim, some who were on the ride, and some who work professionally in mental health and cycling.

The website for the ride gives a bit of background to Tim and the charities, and there's a diary of the journey as well: https://timcyclesthecoast.com/

All welcome
