The problem is that without enforcement drivers will still go at the previous speed limit (and if anyone is foolish enough to actually follow the posted limit they will be tailgated and overtaken until they conform).

So hopefully part of that £1.6M budget is the installation of average speed cameras.

Let's hope it gets delayed into oblivion.

Meanwhile, the council can implement a speed-limit reduction, fOr saFteY (which was all that was needed in the first place)

There is a pavement from the east Calder / Jupiter art land junction, never seen a pedestrian on it. There is maybe room on the verge on the north side from the roindabout outside livi where the recycling facility resides. Would be an unpleasant cycle.

9.1 Recommendations

As described in this report, a number of route options justify further investigation and progress towards implementation.

Some elements of the route, such as West Calder to Polbeth, can be progressed in the relatively short term. Meanwhile other sections such as Livingston to Hermiston will require significant further study, and a relatively long planning and design period for implementation,

There was a consultation on this earlier (on the 18th Feb) at the Howden Park Centre, Livingston. The consultation is still at an early stage.

(Sorry I didn't post about it sooner - I was on holiday)

Some feedback I heard from the consultation:

There was a turnout of ~25

They're looking at a route from West Calder through to Calder Rd/ Hermiston (much of which is actually in Edinburgh!). They want to stay as close to the A71 as possible and are thinking of a 'fast commuter' type of route.

Possibly a ped/cycle bridge over the city bypass just north of the Calder Rd roundabout (could be just wishful thinking?)

General agreement that the worst section is the one from Wilkieston to Hermiston village, where the carriageway is narrow. Parts have a footway which could be widened.

AECOM(?) plan to finish the report by the end of March 2016 and believe that its content should public.

My view: If it is a 3 or 4m wide path with 1 or 2m of grass verge between it and the road, it'll be good. If it's just forcing cyclists on to the existing pavement, it'll be crap.

It would have to be very well segregated to tempt me away from the A71... magic paint wouldn't cut it for me. Not on the A70.

Council groups in West Lothian and Edinburgh appear to be looking at feasibility of development on the A71 from West Lothian into Edinburgh and how possible it is to have a segregated cycle and walking route largely following the A71 route to reach inside the bypass and possibly join the tram paths routes at Edinburgh park station.

There is ever increasing standing traffic on this route approaching Hermiston junction and does become problematic on the commute having to pass the HGV on the right and cars on the left, I am sure folk just think I am weaving, but to be honest I have never made a basket in my life.

Interested to hear what others think of this and how much this route is used or would be used following changes. I use this route most mornings, a lot of the tarmac is terrible.
