So 14 years on this. Puts Edinburgh Airport expansion into context! Thanks for update that at least it will happen. Should reduce car journeys and help to sell houses out there at same time!

It's been a while since I updated this thread. Last night our Community Council hosted Stuart Buchanan who is the asset manager for West Craigs limited. I think hankchief haa met him previously.

He mentioned that his first meeting regarding the bridge was back on 2012 and seems as frustrated as anyone that it has taken so long to come to fruition.

The project should be out to tender in the next few weeks with a target completion date towards the end of 2026. The majority of the project timeline will consist of building the abutments. Once ready the actual bridge will take 2.5 hours to lift into place and they will be given A 4 hour window to do so (presumably overnight). This means they are not restricted to certain weekends.

Meanwhile Renwicks is sadly scheduled for removal in January.

A quick update on the West Craigs bridge based on what I have heard via CC and CEC Finance and Resources Committee.

The headline is that the bridge should be getting built towards the end of this year.

Designs have been finalised and CEC have agreed to take on the ongoing maintenance and legal requirements of having a new bridge over the railway.

Although perhaps not the only blockers, Network Rail were instrumental in making sure this bridge wasn't built earlier. However, given the presence of Renwicks bridge slightly to the North West and the ongoing rail electrificaiton project they can't delay the project any longer. My understanding is that the developers have a right of access over Renwicks so Network Rail can't remove it without their permission and that permission wont be granted without the new bridge (Or network rail raising Renwicks at their own cost which wont happen).

The final project should involve Renwicks being removed during the same line closure that the new bridge is installed. Assuming the original Renwicks removal timescales are adhered to this would entail 24 hour working across 3 days so likely either Christmas or New Year.

Dropped by the bridge today, no change in the last 6 months bar that they are now actively building houses near the east side.

I see they have put up large metal posts either side of the railway which I presume are for electrification. If that's the case then a new, significantly higher crossing will be required, probably necessitating a dogleg ramp up for cycles etc.

We live in hope.

I'm sure you know the answer about bike lanes. They have missed an opportunity to put a bike lane along Maybury, instead opting for the path running through the housing development ending at the ramp to nowhere by the railway line. It's not a bad option (if the bridge ever gets built) but a Maybury track should also have been added as the spare lane there is used to enable speeding and nothing else.

I don't think The Craigs Road Junction will be wider but it will enable more traffic to flow east along Craigs Road. The one good part of the design is that it will have all ways stopped for pedestrians as per the junctions on the northern part of Maybury, although you will of course be made to stop and wait having pressed the button to request permission to be placed at the top of the transport hierarchy for a short period.

Hi All

I managed to get some info from one of the Project Managers of the West Craigs masterplan.

Regarding Bus 31 access

''I am replying to your email sent to my colleague, Ben Brough, who is currently away.

The Lothian 31 service will run through West Craigs - via Craigs Road / Turnhouse Road but only once the Craigs Road / Maybury Road Junction has been improved.

City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) controls Lothian Buses and at their request West Craigs installed bus stops in anticipation of the 31 being diverted. Lothian Buses won’t know when the service is starting as the date for the junction works is currently not set.

CEC asked Taylor Wimpey (TW) to deliver the improved junction as part of their planning consent next to Maybury Road. TW have now secured detailed planning consent and Roads Construction Consent for the widened junction, but CEC (who are responsible for circa 80% of the cost of the junction) have so far failed to reach agreement with TW on the junction works cost.

All of the housebuilders and new residents of West Craigs are very keen for these junction works to be progressed and I know many are contacting their local CEC councillors to impress on them the urgency of the situation.

If you have any questions or are unsure which roads are which, please let me know.

Regarding the bridge

The works have been tendered and hopefully will commence this autumn, subject to the legal documentation all being agreed by then.

Best

Marcus

Marcus Collings MRICS, RICS Registered Valuer ''

Really hoping they are going to start working on the above issues soon !

Dropped by the airport side of Renwicks Bridge today while passing by, still no sign of anything happening bridge-wise. There's a road (Loverose Way?) close by on the east side with an unfinished tarmac path split off it leading right up to the bridge so that gives cause for hope.
I wonder if anything will be done to improve the track by the airport fence, not sure it would appeal to urban commuters in its present lumpy state.

The current blockade planned to shut down all services at Ratho highlights the loss of the Dalmeny bypass which would have been delivered by Almond Chord

Unlike HS2 the project has followed a model stage-gate process, and land has been secured, with plans and costings worked out

Delivering this should align with developer funding for a Winchburgh Station, plus the developer of the East side (Turnhouse) housing also funding a station on the old airport site (with an autonomous pod shuttle service replacing the bus from long stay car parking, and airfreight terminal - and also serving a new station for EDI and housing development, releasing land through reducing the land required for car storage in residential development = more houses per ha)

This can also deliver a rail freight hub for the 100mph freight trains that are currently running a daily Birmingham-Motherwell service taking under 4 hours (vs 6-8 hours by road) with 1 driver (vs 8-24 trucks & drivers) With such huge savings & reduction in carbon footprint it seems daft that so many companies are still using road haulage for this traffic

A rail freight hub at Turnhouse would be well sited to have cycle logistics deliveries to many parts of Edinburgh plus road or rail connections to most parts of Scotland via M8, M9, M90, A720. How can this be kept in focus?

I'm remembering the work of Bicycle Bob Silvermann from le Monde a Biciclette in Montreal - when faced with the challenge of access to bridges across the St Lawrence River

Perhaps a small team of 'bunnies' might turn up to use the Schroedingers Bridge under the railway, that Defra says exists but real life suggests otherwise?

Rabbits are notoriously good at burrowing, so if that bridge is still there, it just needs digging out?

As with Doubledykes Road this project will be at GRIP stage 7 or 8 and making changes has penalties & is highly discouraged

BUT if the bridge abutments remain, and a basic 4 metre Armco tube can be dropped in to place, with spoil from the digging out then used to cover it over, this might just be workable, especially if a long blockade is scheduled to relay rails, or run out the knitting...

Again if there is an opportunity to sit with the project team and ask the questions...?

I had some pricing for just such a tube from John Grimshaw recently as it would also have sorted a problem out at Preston - relatively low cost to deliver to site and assemble, then drag in to the gap between the old bridge abutments (which are presumably buried in the embankment)

web trawlers - any old pictures of this bridge?

How's John Lauder getting started with his Network Rail secondment to develop walking & cycling with Scotland's Railway. One to raise with him?

“it appears that the rather useful City of Edinburgh Council Atlas is no longer publicly accessible”

Yeah I noticed that recently.

There is another CEC map, perhaps with fewer layers.

@Hankchief: The underbridge (shown in wangi's map) isn't there any more.

It's still shown on Defra's Magic Map web app! Nice to know that their decision making is based on accurate and up-to-date information...

(And as another side note, it appears that the rather useful City of Edinburgh Council Atlas is no longer publicly accessible. The bookmark I had for it now takes you to an ArcGIS logon page - with no means of registration - and the links that turn up on Google hits for "City of Edinburgh Council Atlas" do the same. Bloomin' marvellous.)

@wangi: Interesting that the mile post marked on this map ... is still present on current OS mapping.

(you don't go putting mile posts on private tracks, do you?)

That milepost is on the railway; you can trace them every quarter of a mile along the railway (with some missing/not shown, but that might well just be the OS not recording all of them). The next one towards Dalmeny is marked as the 6 mile milepost, so the particular one you've highlighted marks 5¾ miles from the origin point, which makes it Waverley station.

(Another point, although somewhat peripheral to this particular topic: just because something is still shown on the OS map doesn't mean that it's actually still there. The online version of the 1:50,000 mapping still shows an actual railway between Loanhead and Millerhill which, for most of its length, is now a cycle path. But it also shows the Spire hospital at Shawfair which I'm pretty sure post-dates the lifting of the tracks. The 1:25,000 map only shows the tracks in situ between Gilmerton station and Shawfair, and the 'standard mapping' correctly shows a path, so they know the railway's not there any more but presumably CBA to update certain of the mapping. Last time I passed by that way - sometime during lockdown as part of my ScoGov mandated exercise - there were still tracks in situ from Millerhill as far as the old Millerhill Road, to the east of the Borders Railway.)

What has happened to the underbridge, South of Meadowfield Farm?

Obviously Further along you have the old A9 & then Cammo Road bridge sites
