Hi, Apologies if this is covered somewhere else. I was cycling along portobello prom yesterday. Just along from the cat and dog home heading into Portobello. There were a couple of boys, teenagers I think, cycling towards me. At the last moment one of them shouted and cycled straight towards me. I had to swerve to avoid him and came of my bike. Ended up in A&E, dented helmet and an AC Joint injury and not what I assumed was a dislocated shoulder.

Just wanted to let you know to look out for them and apologies if this is posted elsewhere. Thanks to ERI A&E for sorting me out.

What looks like a very unpleasant situation at the junction at Frasers/Lothian Rd. A bike crushed under a Rabbie's Tours van in the left (heading west) lane. Emergency services just arriving as I passed, traffic at a standstill. Wasn't looking good so hoping that the owner of the bike isn't too badly hurt.

Had an email from someone:-

"I was cycling east on Fountainhall Rd yesterday around 9am and saw ahead of me, near the library, a small paramedics vehicle. I could see someone on their knees administering chest compressions. There was room to cycle past, but I thought that disrespectful, so I turned back to the junction with S Lauder and stopped traffic until the ambulance came and the road became obviously blocked. I then continued on my way via the pavement. The victim was was being ventilated I think, by this time. I glanced down and saw a white male, approx 30-45 years. His bike was propped against a hedge and not obviously damaged."

Has anyone heard anything about this?

Saw aftermath of a collision between car and bike at the lights at Ellersly Road this evening 6:30ish, cyclist lying on road, with driver and two passers by in attendance, I stopped to see if I could help, cyclist conscious but pretty wobbly. Police/ambulance were called. Sounded like it was a SMIDSY from what both the driver and cyclist were saying. We managed to help cyclist up to sit in car so could keep warm while waiting for services to arrive, all in good hand so I left them to it.

I'm on the bus today but there was a cyclist being treated by a motorcycle paramedic on Oxgangs Road North at the junction with Ogamgs Farm Road. The cyclist was kneeling for treatment so hoping nothing major.

I didn't see what happened so can't comment on the cause.

Just hope they are alright.

I passed by an accident a few minutes ago at the junction of Lauder Road and Grange Loan. It was too dark to see much as I passed by but someone was lying immobile, looked like they might have had a black cycle helmet on, but I didn't see a bike; and there was a car and a small crowd of helpers by them in the middle of the street.

An ambulance got there the same time as I did.

Hoping for the best.

Hopefully when (ADMIN EDIT name removed for privacy - just in case he prefers that) gets out of hospital he reads this and can send me a PM to get the bike unlocked. It's not badly damaged, the seat was twisted and the front mud guard arms had come loose but otherwise I think it faired better than the rider.

On my merry (wet) way to the water of leith I could see hazard lights and some people on the road. I carried on to see if I could put my new first aid to use.

Car had pulled out of junction and he'd gone over bonnet and landed on right side. Guessing she had pulled out of Murrayfield Ave in a hurry probably turning right as you don't get many gaps...

Driver and witnesses had already stopped. Taxis and cars beeping and squeezing past (2 feet away from my shoulder as I knelt beside him) - idiots.

Thankfully he was awake and nothing obviously broken or bleeding. There was a qualified nurse there so I didn't have ot take charge, a doctor appeared too but had to get away to surgery(!)
Local laundrette and passers by provided towels and even better a picnic blanket with a waterproof backing to cover him with.

While holding his neck we were talking to him about where he was on his way to. Work, Dundee St, he works in traffic management planning
I joked that this junction needs some work then - he said it was already on the list (hopefully it'll get bumped up the list now that one of their own was knocked off)
I mentioned I worked in Heriot-Watt Union with a guy who did that... he said "That would be me"
What a way to meet someone you knew from the past. Kneeling in the road holding his neck still.

Ambulance arrived pretty quickly, got his neck in a brace after snipping his snood in half, he joked he needed a new one anyway.
I spied his bike and asked if he needed it chained up, he doesn't have a chain so I used mine hence hoping he can get in touch, failing that I will try to track down his office and take it there but I reckon it will be a few weeks before he needs it again. No serious damage either just the twisted saddle and the loose mud guard like I said

Hope you recover quick (ADMIN EDIT name removed for privacy - just in case he prefers that) and get in touch. We can meet up in the Roseburn for a pint before walking to the bike

Afternoon All,
I've been following your forum for a wee while now, intending to contribute but not quite getting around to it until now. It's a great thing - congrats to you all for making it so useful and informative. I'd hoped that my introductory post might have been on a more light-hearted subject, but unfortunately I'm instead prompted by the fact that my 15 year-old son was hit by a car last Friday afternoon.
He was cycling down into Portobello after rugby training at Cavalry Park. At the junction after Porty High (Duddingston Park/Baileyfield Road), he went straight across on green and the car opposite him (coming up from Porty along Brighton Place) turned right into him and hit him head on. He hit the windscreen hard enough to completely smash it, went over the roof and landed on the road at the back of the car. He was whisked off to the Royal braced on one of those rigid boards, his neck in a brace, but after a series of checks he was allowed home later that evening. Incredibly, he escaped with only a few cuts and scrapes, a couple of stitches above one eyebrow and a particularly spectacular black eye. He was wearing a rucksack which he had only a few minutes earlier stuffed with a giant bag of cheesy puffs and, with the initial impact being to his back, he thinks they acted like an airbag in absorbing the worst of the shock. He was also wearing a helmet which, judging by the damage to it, definitely prevented worse injuries.
The driver of the car has admitted liability (the sun was in his eyes, apparently!!) and the police have said that he will be charged with careless driving/driving without due care and attention.
Unfortunately, his bicycle wasn't as lucky. It was a lovely vintage Raleigh - dark blue skinny 531 steel frame - and even though it's on loan from ERC, with whom my son rides (along with the rest of my family) and he'd only been riding it for a few months, he'd kind of fallen in love with it. The frame is bent in several places, both wheels are buckled, the handlebars are bent, one crank is bent and the saddle is torn.
Anyway, being in the fortunate position of never having had to deal with this sort of thing before, I wondered if any of you had and if so what would be your advice on how to proceed. Specifically, do you think I should get a lawyer involved? I've always had a slightly jaundiced view of personal accident lawyers and am minded to just claim direct (particularly as my son's injuries are not too serious) but is that naive?
Any thoughts gratefully considered.
Hoping to contribute on more enjoyable topics in the future....

Riding back from Kirkliston TT tonight, an unfortunate cyclist had come off his bike at Craigiehall where there is the entrance to the Army complex. He was being well attended by personnel from the base and was on the ground under a blanket but also seemed to be talking - other cyclists had stopped and the Army were directing traffic around the stopped cars so we moved on. An ambulance was about a minute away.

I hope he will be OK - I know appearances can be deceiving but it didn't look like serious injury, so hope that's right.

"Sheriff Douglas Small has suggested that a traffic island be built at the spot where he died to slow vehicles.

He also recommended that all cyclists wear helmets and high visibility gear."

Mrs MacIntyre added: "I can see why he made the recommendation that all cyclists wear high visibility clothing and helmets.

"But the evidence was very clear that no helmet in the world would have saved Jason, and I believe he was perfectly visible, and MacTaggart would not have seen him, whatever he was wearing."
