The Chevy Chase out of Morpeth uses some lovely roads and also gives you the chance to ride through Otterburn military ranges which are only open to the public a couple of weeks a year. You can easily ride for a couple of hours up on the ranges and see no-one and it's the only audax I know where you get to cycle down the middle of a runway. Its very easy actually, you just keep turning left. Other than Cairn o Mount and Cairnwell its flat, well a very shallow climb up Glen Dee/Deeside. We did it in around 12 hours, and had snow, sleat, hail, cold, sun and but no rain... oh wait, aye we had rain. Other than that it starts at 8am so drivable from Edinburgh before hand so saving you sleeping over the night before, unless you really want to. The roads are dead quiet, I don't recall much traffic at all!
