"Well done to the friends of bearsway for organising and continuing to fight the fight."

Might well have played a part in (apparently) getting the minister so 'on-side' with segregated infrastructure.

A few things struck me about Bearsway phase 1.

1. The road is busy. I mean very busy. We tried to cross it on foot without traffic lights and had to wait a couple of minutes before there was any break in the traffic.

2. Phase 1 is very short. Under a mile and ends at American Golf, which I can't imagine get many customers by bike.

3. The route itself is very good and covers a small incline (up and down) which is where you need protection the most as you're going slower.

4. It not especially wide so shepherding little people is difficult if you have to keep to your side of the path. (Something that does concern me with the 2.5m (reducing to 2.1m) on the East-West route.

5. The topography such that you have a big hill on one side with houses on it and river /railway on the other. You wouldn't want to be cycling up and down the hill unnecessarily so the main road is the sensible option.

6. Heading south towards Glasgow a very hostile environment and not particularly pleasant for any road user. Why anyone wants to keep it as is is beyond me.

All in all, glad we made the effort to see it for ourselves. It does surprise me that such fuss is being made over something that isn't finished and has such a small impact.

Well done to the friends of bearsway for organising and continuing to fight the fight.

Well done to all who went - it was very heartening to see some great clips being shared of this. A lot of very young kids cycling safely beside a main road.

It baffles me that there is such opposition to letting people cycle safely.

Great ride. The existing path surprised me in its shortness but was in a very useful spot over a slow climb in both directions. Sensible compromises have been made at bus stops, some fully floating and some ''Cycling by design'' blue paint at quieter stops.

The roads in the area are very wide (with quick traffic) and the existing way was certainly causing zero issues!

Met with travel buddy Frenchy, spoke at length with Cycling UK's eastern rep Esmond and just before shooting off Arrelcat introduced herself! I later spotted her again from the canal and shouted (she was down on the road) but no counter spot was made.

Special shoutouts to Hank_chief for the cycling ticket after, it was fab! Really worrying crash in the madison but after some time both grounded riders got back on it. I was counting on a stretcher, poor guy got a full pace bike in the back :/

Fantastic turnout. Shows that the nationalist councillors in east dunbarton were mislead by a few highly vocal objectors. On man had objecting letters in the local newspaper 8 weeks in a row! No rational person thinking to the future would object to cycle lanes, so why did they vote against it? Simple, council elections next year. They thought they could garner more votes in this closely fought district. Looks like their plan could backfire.

Segregated cycle paths don't need planning permission. Unless the Traffic Regulation Order process is changed to allow segregated cycle lanes to be developed without the need for a TRO (as currently happens with bus stop clearways) then this is just waffle.
