Far better design would require the key to lock it, then if you lose you key that is on you. This whole threads is caused by bad design of the lock. See also the benefit of Mortice over Yale

All’s well that ends well, as they say! I hate the ‘disappeared key’ feeling with a vengeance. I once locked up the bakkyfiets with an alarmed motorcycle disc lock at St James Quarter which similarly allows fitting without the key, and then we had a taxi round-trip to retrieve the key from home as we were too short on our deadline to bus it.

Today it was my turn to be rubbish, because I failed to notice that I left the house this morning without the means to open my bicycle lock. Lest malicious readers think I own only one lock, heh, I have several, but the lock I brought with me today can be closed without a key. For convenience I suppose.

Luckily* this discovery happened in the company of several CCEers. @bakky lent me a spare U-lock as extra security while @LaidBack and I went off to consider padlock destruction techniques and in search of another cafe so that I could wait for a lift home to look for the missing key. I found it, fortunately, and made sure it will Never Happen Again. Ever. Probably.

I eventually made it back into town and rescued my bike, failed to transact any business at three shops I visited during the afternoon, so rode home into the teeth of whatever the latest storm is and later delivered Big Lock to @bakky with the help of the huge enduro motorbike because I'd had enough of cycling for today.

* and in equal measure, embarassingly

It's time we had another "mountain biking history film" thread. In past years we have had a few that I remember watching:

Mountain Biking - The Untold Story

Klunkerz

Hardihood

Longer-time CCEers will remember mad-as-a-box-of-frogs ace mountain biker, mud-encrusted Rock Shox model and occasional CCEer Jacquie Phelan coming to the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling a couple of times, back in the day.

The days of Repack and proto-mountain biking in 1970s Marin County are well documented, with photos of people like Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey, Joe Breeze and Charlie Kelly hightailin' it down the fire trails in flannel shirts, with big moustaches and even bigger rooster tails of dust behind them. But who took all those amazing photos?

Wende Cragg did. This hour-long film is a really nice history of her mucking in with the chaps (and one or two women), while hauling her camera and goodness knows how many rolls of film at the same time.

https://youtu.be/jsbJojnbdYY

(and JP does get a wee piece to camera later on!)

I will try not to rhyme my advice
Though rhymed advice is very nice

Berta, you do not need a full suspension mountain bike, a hybrid is fine, you should go with 7 or 8 gears, and lighter weight. E.g. Edinburgh Bike Co-op Courier bike. Number of gears not the thing, range the gears cover is the thing. Single speed bikes are trendy and work well on the canal towpath. The Union canal is a contour canal so towpath is very flat. If straying from towpath, get more gears but no more than 8 (we won't check this you can get 9, 10, 11 etc if you want to)

You must have mudguards, lights and panniers. (Only really lights that are a must)

Hi Berta. I think you will notice that a lot of people ride mountain bikes in Edinburgh. The city has a lot of hills and there are cobbled streets and potholes. A mountain bike helps with these. Cheap second-hand bikes can be bought from various places.

Thanks for the comments about patents, IP etc.! I've registered a design with the IPO which "protects any aspect of your design, for example both the product’s shape and decoration". This costs just £50 and has may fewer legal challenges than patents which I reckon would take me many months before I could put the product on sale and a fair amount of investment.

Thanks for the heads up about the Spokes post on Facebook, was wondering where the spike in website traffic was coming from! Have liked and shared it myself.

I've gone ahead and changed the price to a round £15, which will also enable me to offer discounts where appropriate for a tenner and still make some profit (if anyone knows anyone who'd like one then let me know and you can have it for the discounted price!). Think you're absolutely right about increasing profits before scaring off the equivalent number of customers.

I went into The Bicycle Works today to show them what I had and I'm to go back in another day when one of the other business partners is working.

I agree 10 too cheap, if that has you walking to the post office for <£2 profit, for example.

12, 14, 16, 18 are better numbers than 15 for hobby business pricing, I think. They have a good gravity to them, sound more reasoned.

Increasing from 10 you'll surely double profit way before you lose half your customers.
