After the event, but . . .

As well as having an angle grinder, I also have an inverter available - for a modest donation to a charity cycle run I do once a year :o) - which makes the a/g portable, as long as you drive to where ever it's needed.

(Attach inverter to vehicle battery, plug in a/g, grind grind)

Thank you all for the very generous offers. I have taken up Greenroofer's offer (made by PM) as I am naturally very lazy and he lives closest to me.

It still amazes me what a generous and helpful bunch of people use this forum. Thanks again.

Bike Works have an angle grinder in the basement. They have angle-ground cranks for me before to fit on bikes with funny clearances.

I've a small angle grinder, probably with a metal cutting disc (there are different discs for cutting/grinding, and metal/stone).

If you get no better offer, I can throw it in a pannier for collection from Buccleuch Place.

Uberuce - Thanks for the offer, I'll see if anyone offers a suitable electric gizmo within the next day (I love playing with power tools). If not then I'll happily take up your offer - I'm happy to collect the croppers and do any cutting myself as I'm far too proud/much of an idiot (delete as applicable) to let you do it.

I flirted with bike theft this afternoon. My upstairs neighbour is wanting to use her bike to commute, but had forgotten the combination on the cable lock after years of stairwell oublié.

As luck would have it, I've sent my tractor up north so my Dad's got a bike to pootle around on during our family holiday in the Highlands at the end of the month. I'd have preferred to send my road bike, but my Pa's not so keen on drop bars and downtube shifters, and since he's got the bike rack, he picks the tune.

My ex, on whom I am on friendly terms with, has need of my bike trailer, but in the recent absence of a tractor, I was a bit flummoxed. Then I said to neighbour: if I tidy your bike(it's a quite tidy Specialized MTB) up and do any work needing done, can I borrow it for next Sunday morning? And she said yes.

As further luck would have it, I used to be a lower arm strength enthusiast. A side effect of that was a need to buy a mahoosive pair of bolt croppers so I could clip lengths of sturdy metal into suitable lengths to bend with the awesome power of lower arm strength enthusiasm.

So, in the presence of her fella, I cut the cable with frankly disappointing ease.

I can't work out if bolt croppers are applicable to your plight, but if they are, I'll pootle round and choppy chop.

Does anyone have an angle grinder or dremel type tool I could borrow. Don't worry - I'm not planning a new life as a bike thief! I have to replace a broken wheel on junior's pram and while I've managed to remove the wheel, the axle/part of the bearing unit has so far refused to budge, despite attacks by WD40, lube, hacksaw and brute force.

I can pick the tool up from anywhere in Edinburgh (as long as it fits in a rucksack) and will supply some beer/wine as a thank you.
