Thanks for adding events! I've changed around some of the locations so that there's more levels - so now Dunbar is in Scotland rather than at the same level as Scotland. :)

I'm glad folk like it! As I said before, the data is completely open so if you wanted to put events into the calendar and then export them to display on your cycling group's website, that's not only possible but encouraged!

Sally -- the recur feature only does a fixed number of recurrences, to encourage people to check that recurring events are still happening. When you're running low on recurrences, you can recur some more :) It's definitely one of my favourite features!

This should be everyone's calendar -- and we (James and I) will try to do all we can to make it as easy as possible to use for everyone!

When you are putting in the location to create an event, you can click the "UK" button and it'll show you "Scotland" (because that's all that's been created so far), but there's also an "Add New" button. You can then add "England" or "Wales" if you wanted to. By clicking these buttons, it narrows down the list of venues that have already been used. I've currently put in UK > Scotland > Glasgow and UK > Scotland > Edinburgh.
Creating new locations

On the "Places" page, it only lists the locations that were created for events, and it filters the list of events on the side based on which location buttons you click.
Narrowing down event locations

Hope that helps!

Hi, I've created a group for the Dunbar Cycling Group and added our next event, and our main meeting up venue.

I don't see how the "Places" function works though, so far only at UK level?

OK just added a few events for Dumfries ... you never know. I found it very easy to use, once I'd got the hang of it. The 'recur' feature is quite neat. I was expecting to be offered to create a recurring feature from scratch, but I just created a one-off and then hit recur and that worked well.

As others have said, it's only as good as the number of people who use it though, so worth spreading the word

Hello, I'm the author of the software that powers http://cycling.hasacalendar.co.uk/

I've just had a wee look at http://bikeeventsscotland.com/about - we in fact technically do many things nicer, such as usability on mobile phones and filtering events by area, group and more.

But at the end of the day, that's only a minor point. Community sites like this are only as good as the people who use them, and that's what really matters.

Having someone really involved in the community and enthusiastic about cycling like @Marshant looking after this is great start, and as a cyclist myself I really hope this takes off for the community in the same way as Open Tech Calendar has for the local tech community.

Happy to answer any questions about creating an account to add events. or reusing the data on your site, or anything else,
James

In fact, I didn't know about that one!

I think the only thing that OpenCyclingCalendar does that the BikeEventScotland doesn't is an ability to have groups and export all the events for a specific group.

Very cool, though! Good to know that I'm not the only one who's thought it necessary, shame that it's not more widely publicised!

Good luck. Would be useful if enough people added to it.

I presume you know about this -

http://bikeeventsscotland.com/about

Not sure if the 'general public' does...

At some point about two months ago, I noticed an absence of one central place to find out about all the cycling events going on -- because there's really so much going on! Various websites have lists of events (including this fantastic forum) but there's no one place for everything going on across the country.

I don't stay in either Edinburgh or Glasgow but sometimes Edinburgh or Glasgow groups organise things in my area. Occasionally groups in my area organise things that Edinburgh or Glasgow people might be interested in. Sometimes people might just want to have a general idea of what sorts of events are going on in the next week.

Enter my current pet project:
http://cycling.hasacalendar.co.uk/

It's like a wiki -- "open" in two big ways:

Open to anyone who wants to create an account and add/edit groups and events

Open data -- anyone can take the data from the calendar and use it

A calendar like this has existed for a couple years for the tech community - OpenTechCalendar - and it's often used by people just starting to get involved in the community, and is sometimes used to ensure that big events don't clash. Anyone can export the event data and include in on their website or in their personal calendars.

This calendar is not meant to replace people writing about upcoming events on their website, but merely to act as a central index of all events, with links back to websites with more details.

Currently, I'm the only person putting in groups and events -- If you like the idea and you know of a group or event that's not yet included, then it would be fantastic if you created an account and helped me to add things in!

If you don't really like it, please let me know what can be done to make it better! I'm hoping that this is something the entire cycling community would find useful, not just a personal itch.

What do you all think?

Thanks for any help and feedback you can offer!
