ditto.

If all goes well we'll be on almost matching red road bikes, rather than the tandem. I'm a bit worried that none of the bikes we're taking have pannier racks currently attached. this may be a first in our post-children cycling escapades...

Mother’s Day Action: 26 March, 10am at Bangholm Outdoor Centre, Craighall Gardens, Edinburgh

When others Mum’s are enjoying breakfast in bed, a few of us plan to be cycling around the cycle paths of Edinburgh with children in tow handing out #walkcyclevote leaflets to families. Part ‘soft launch’, part photo opportunity we hope that we’ll get some press attention. I've booked a photographer for anyone willing to be a WCV model! Any families that come and join us should be able to get a good photo of themselves too. Please come along, invite others – with our without Mums. We’ll be back at Bangholm by 12ish so you can still do Mother’s Day activities : )
Please drop me an email on suzanne.forup@cyclinguk.org if you plan to come

We need a North-of-the-Border champion campaigner with a public profile like Chris Boardman.

But who? It'd need to be someone who lives here, not someone like Chris Hoy who doesn't (as we all know the 'not local' angle would give the antis a massive stick to beat him with!).

"I don't know how you can keep it up chdot"

I just post stuff on here, and perhaps do some 'off the record' things and take a few photos.

But - "Dealing with the council" less and less.

Various CEC employees have moved on and so will some of councillors I know best next May.

Might have some fun in the run up to the election, then it's really up to the new intake of councillors and (maybe) an extra tranche of 'campaigners'.

Twitter is not to everyone's taste, but most councillors use it, some senior officials too, plus the press.

Some campaigning can be quite simple. Different accounts for different campaigns is proving useful.

I would very much like to be more involved actively in campaigning for PoP- I've done bits and bobs already but nothing very significant (translating, pestering, flyering etc...), and this year I was completely rubbish.

I'm afraid I am significantly more than a decade over the desired age, and just at the moment I am reticent to commit for personal reasons, but that may change come the new year.

Yesterday I got a PM about something to do with Roseburn.

It also contained this.

"Its been great to get involved - I've not posted much on the CCE forums before this week, you guys are an impressive bunch. My campaigning thus far has involved the odd PoP appearance and Spokes hustings, but it has been inspiring to get in touch with so many passionate people."

I responded with "That's more than most people who ride bikes do (not that anyone 'ought' to do anything)."

This forum was set up partly to encourage 'campaigning' - whatever that is.

I consider turning up to PoP once a year to be campaigning. So obviously is the dogged determined detailed dedication of Spokes (40 next year).

There's so much possible in between.

It can be an email to a councillor or a supportive chat to a colleague/friend thinking of cycling to work.

Even suggesting a ride to Roseburn. To say that no organisation was involved would be far from true, but 'about 200 people' in less than a week was impressive.

However -

Being a CCE member/reader doesn't mean you have to do anything.

There have been times in the past when I've thought 'is there too much about campaigning on here'.

But as any casual observer will notice there's (almost) everything on here that can (somehow) be linked to bicycles or Edinburgh.

Long may it continue.

& @Sallyhinch's response

"

Indeed. I should say that we are looking for 'fresh blood' for POP - some of the old stalwarts are beginning to get war weary, and also new people will hopefully bring new ideas and new ways of taking POP forward. Clearly, the local authority elections are going to be almost as key as the Holyrood ones (maybe more so). We're still working on how best to do it, but will likely have an open session whereby people with ideas, energy, enthusiasm and time (or some combination thereof) can chip in.

For my 2nd time, I'm going to repost this as @chdot doesn't like thread drift - who knew...

"
I should say I dropped out of the inner circle of POP to spend more time with my family and ended up taking on Roseburn.

Running a campaign is physically & mentally taxing, but has been made easier by the excellent support I have on here and from the many people in Roseburn who have contacted us - most of whom haven't done any campaigning before.

The cycle revolution will come but we need people to get involved and take on the roles at the front of the campaign(s) and just behind.

Please do step forward and offer what you can, where you can, whether it is local to you, citywide or national. Don't for a minute think that those active now know what they are doing - most of the time we are flying by the seats of our pants and mistakes do happen, but it better to try and fail than not try at at all...

"Well that's been tried before - in a general way.
http://www.politecycling.info"

Yes, and a lot more than that over the years!!
http://www.spokes.org.uk/documents/advice/considerate-cycling/

As @chdot says, this is not really something that can be tackled on a wide scale by a voluntary organisation. Much of the spokes effort was basically a token effort in response to some particular situation (e.g. politicians getting restless) though certainly with the hope that we might help a bit. Another purpose was to show the politicians that we appreciated the issue, so as to help keep them onside when it came to other topics such as budgets!

Incidentally we still have loads of copies of the 2012 printed "topics-based" flyer if anyone could use some!

I suspect the fact that folk on bikes and on feet are expected to share the same space is a larger factor than any anonymity (stick a helmet and sunglasses on a "racing" cyclist and they become pretty unidentifiable and anonymous as well).

Throughout the city there are clear demarcations of ground areas for cars, so people walking on them tend to do so in a way that acknowledges the cars' priority - they'll even run to get out of the way rather than cause drivers to slow down.

The canal's a shared use path without any clear demarcation, so everyone can think they have a right to be there and why should they cede to others? And it is promoted by the Council as a route that bike commuters can use to keep away from traffic. Conflict by design as David Spaven said on Monday (that may have been before you arrived, daisydaisy).

I spoke to a couple of older guys at the end of the living streets meeting and they had a much bigger problem with cyclists than drivers. It was hard to hear, because objectively cars take up more space and are more dangerous than bikes, but some bad experiences with cyclists had made a huge impression on these guys. Cycle commuters on the canal going v fast and a cyclist shouting and making rude gestures were complained about. I think the face to face, personal interaction that cyclists have with walkers makes a big impression compared to a more anonymous car. Of course they also complained that bikes don't have number plates!

It's annoying that cyclists are all grouped together with the few bad ones in a way that drivers and pedestrians are not.

Won't have been a speed merchant who removed the signs, they don't slow for anything

But who would take it upon themselves to remove the signs given the more pressing concerns in the world?

Most signs that are made by kids then laminated and put out in the rain end up a lovely rainbow rorsarch smudge of colours. Pretty.

I'm hardly a speed merchant and I only noticed the signs because I saw someone removing them.

I doubt the increasing number of inconsiderate racers on that path will have seen - or cared if they did see.
The only ones who will are the extraordinary high proportion of cyclists who are very considerate of other users, and patient around dogs often inconsiderately left to wander around.

Hmmmm. Removing the signs will improve relations with the school and the pupils who put the work in. Oh yes. Doesn't at all then reinforce a negative image of cyclists. Not at all. No matter what you think about the purpose of the signs, or any negativity they create, there's always someone who manages to not only prove them right, but also make things worse.
