Mother’s Day Action: 26 March, 10am at Bangholm Outdoor Centre, Craighall Gardens, Edinburgh

When others Mum’s are enjoying breakfast in bed, a few of us plan to be cycling around the cycle paths of Edinburgh with children in tow handing out #walkcyclevote leaflets to families. Part ‘soft launch’, part photo opportunity we hope that we’ll get some press attention. I've booked a photographer for anyone willing to be a WCV model! Any families that come and join us should be able to get a good photo of themselves too. Please come along, invite others – with our without Mums. We’ll be back at Bangholm by 12ish so you can still do Mother’s Day activities : )
Please drop me an email on suzanne.forup@cyclinguk.org if you plan to come

For my 2nd time, I'm going to repost this as @chdot doesn't like thread drift - who knew...

"
I should say I dropped out of the inner circle of POP to spend more time with my family and ended up taking on Roseburn.

Running a campaign is physically & mentally taxing, but has been made easier by the excellent support I have on here and from the many people in Roseburn who have contacted us - most of whom haven't done any campaigning before.

The cycle revolution will come but we need people to get involved and take on the roles at the front of the campaign(s) and just behind.

Please do step forward and offer what you can, where you can, whether it is local to you, citywide or national. Don't for a minute think that those active now know what they are doing - most of the time we are flying by the seats of our pants and mistakes do happen, but it better to try and fail than not try at at all...

Wondered if anyone else had seen the laminated signs put up on the Roseburn path around the red footbridge at Coltbridge Avenue/ Water of Leith Bridge? 8 (I think), 7 of which could be characterised as critical of cyclists (slow down around walkers, dogs etc), 1 that seems to ask cars to stop for zebra crossings (nice drawing, not too relevant in situ?)

Wondered if this might be an opportunity for some positive outreach around safety (maybe some of us could volunteer to distribute signs along more of the path?), but perhaps get them to think about pedestrian and dog-walker behaviour also? (Highway Code 56 etc) - is this something that Spokes might be good to involve?

Interesting article here:

http://www.theguardian.com/news/oliver-burkeman-s-blog/2013/dec/11/ironic-effects-sabotage-your-plans

Particularly this paragraph:

Awareness campaigns get forgotten by the people who need them most

"Motivated forgetting" is an especially galling species of ironic effect: when a message makes you feel vulnerable – for example, by reminding you of the ways in which your gender or ethnicity places you at a disadvantage – you're more likely to find ways, conscious or otherwise, to forget it, in order to retain a sense of self-control. In a study to be published in the Journal of Consumer Research, marketing experts found that students who were reminded of their university's poor performance were less likely to remember an advertisement offering a discount at the campus bookshop. "Consider an advertisement for breast cancer prevention," the researchers write. "If the ad makes … women’s vulnerability to the disease" salient in their minds, they could "feel threatened and exhibit defensive responses, such as decreased ad memory."

In short: if you're trying to change behaviour or beliefs – your own, or other people's – don't assume that the most direct, vigorous or effortful route is necessarily the most effective one. The human mind is much, much more perverse and annoying than that.
