“We’re also being extremely cost-effective by using our own council vehicles, which travel all over the city every day, to help promote the project.”

How many people are likely to be inspired to cycle by what they see on the side of a (possibly badly driven) council vehicle?

Sally, they now have a series of Orcas and wands protecting the strip on/alongside the dual carriageway*

I wonder if they built it by only narrowing the carriageway.

*this is not a formal infra safari as I'm in a coach and have no control of our route and I don't have the window seat

We may get a tiger crossing in Edinburgh in due course. It ison the proposed design of the new road layout at RBS Gogarburn as part of the Hermiston Village development, and would bring people across Gogar Station Road from the bike path through the development onto the existing bike path network.

Interesting. The Great North Road was one of the areas where the City Ambition grant was supposed to be improving. The roundabout looks nice enough but 30 yards down the road you're dumped onto a dual carriageway with nothing but a dotted line - and then nothing - for protection. Can't imagine that's done much for 8-80 cycling. When we did the tour for the Cycling Embassy, the plans were much more ambitious than that

A tiger crossing is like a zebra but also has a cycle path going across it.

There appears to be a reasonably active Cycling Campaign in Newcastle (see Katja Leyendeker in chdot's link above) who are doing their best to point out that paint under parking bays etc etc etc is not cycling infrastructure... (thanks to the CEoGB blog for links to this...)

They did also secure a fairly big chunk of cash in the form of a City Cycling Ambition grant a year or so back. From what I saw of it (at the Cycling Embassy AGM infrastructure safari), the plans weren't bad, with some fairly hefty routes planned, including a copenhagen style track along at least one major route. I think they've since got a bit bogged down in the politics of actually doing it, plus trying to make the UK design guidelines actually work with segregated infrastructure. All complicated by the fact that the grant money has to be spent in a very short timescale.

Interesting, not least because they propose I cycle illegally on several stretches of pavement.

Update on Bikeability in the Bay.

It seams Mr grumpy & Dangerous has returned to his normal activities. Reversing out of his drive into the path of children on bikes and driving quite fast & cutting up children on the T junction yesterday. I was party to the conversation between Volunteer parent leaders and the school's headmaster. I called my local cycle freindly councillor who came straight round. Reg noted he went off to see the local Police cheif in the Bay.

The head had already voiced his concerns to the police and welcomes our comunity involvement. We're told that its at least carekess driving and a local Officer would be making our concerns clear to the local man.

Hurray.

Hi Instography. I regularly transmute by bike to Embra from Dunfermline in a sedate sort of way. I share your concerns and, like DaveC, am keen that my own kids can cycle to school without being mown down by luxury cars. I've written to various politicians about cycle infrastructure in Fife - and over the water - over the years, mainly about the NCN1 route to the bridge, and would be interested in comparing notes if you'd like to PM me.

Shame that Gerry McMullen was not re-elected last week, if memory serves.

But CTC is a statutory consultee. Nuff said. If you're interested in the politics of cycling, that matters. BC (about whom I know nothing at all) can make as much noise as it likes but if it's not a statutory consultee it's outside the tent pissing in or maybe in the other direction. Whatever. It's ineffectual. If I was joining something I'd want it to be someone in the tent, pissing across the table. (Excuse the analogy but once I'd started I found it impossible to stop).

British Cycling is all about sport though. Not that I have anything against sport cycling, it's great. Essentially though it's the governing body for all the racing and competitions. Great too that they are now doing commuter info and campaigning, the more the merrier.

I joined CTC a couple of years ago because I was interested in touring, but subsequently I've discovered there's more to the organisation. CTC does something different from BC, it has a different structure based around the local branches. It has a long history of campaigning. CTC is a statutory consultative body at national and local government level regarding cycling policies, regulation, infrastructure, etc.

Personally CTC fits my interests more than BC does. I'm also a member of Spokes and I don't see any contradiction. If I were to eventually join Audax UK I would still be a member of CTC. Someone could be a member of CTC and BC, I don't see why not. There's no either/or involved as far as I can see.

@bax each to their own. There are enough organisations you or anyone can join and if you choose to spend your cash on a BC subscription fair do's. They all offer different things too so whatever your niche might be it may fit one better than the other. I often hear that the CTC mag is one of the best for quality and comes as part of your membership. The BC site online is not particularly user friendly, but I think they are rather good at news and news breaking articles, they also tend to follow racing somewhat more than the CTC. Not sure about BC campaigning...
