Tried to go to Fife but FETA had put their poxy barriers down over both walkways without announcing it in advance of the last turn-off the way they do for motor vehicles. Very few other cyclists about; lots of large famblygroups with dogs, especially round Dalmeny. Lots of 'road narrowing ahead' signs blown down on the A90 path which I stopped to drag closer to he wall.

Just rode home from my parents. Had fleece, t-shirt and longsleeve on underneath. MUCH MUCH too hot! Had to pull gloves off and unzip the coat to get some ventilation.

Town pretty quiet and drivers seem to be pootling quite quietly. Perhaps worried they are still over limit so taking it easy? Or maybe they don't want to get round to mother-in-laws for turkey sandwiches and re-heated sprouts that badly...

Didn't manage a morning ride, but did head out for a quick spin this evening, around quarter to eleven. Whizzed down to Portobello and along the prom to Joppa, then back along Portobello Road. Tailwind on the way down meant I was spinning out in top gear. Headwind on the way back created resistance such that it was like a slow, steady climb.

Incredibly warm, so I was completely overdressed just with my indoor clothes and a windproof jacket and wool cycling cap. Must improve my fitness levels, too much roast meat and lounging around!

Aye, my parents didn't pick the ugliest place to live...

The light wasn't great so the photos I took were a bit drab. What I'm kicking myself for is not going to the radio mast, but I can remedy that in the coming days.

Stayed in fixed. It's mostly uphill, so there were no repeats of Hilly Tuesday's uncomfortable spinning. I can't be sure if that's just because the descents aren't as steep or whether it's just that I'm more used to it, but the spinny sections were pretty good fun.

You're on 40x18 *runs to Uncle Sheldon* = 58", if memory serves? I would hasten to preface this by saying take the proper cyclists' advice over mine, but if you're considering this fixed gear nonsense then start high and stay clear of steep ascents. I've got a 72" racer and the 63" wintersaurus and of the two problems to have, difficult ascent is a lesser evil than uncontrollable spinning. Aerodynamics means the high gears don't spin madly.

I've got mild osteoarthritis in both my knees, but they whine more about the weather than they do about fixed riding on either bike.

Well, that was straightforward. Forgot to mark the time, so all I know is that from a third of the distance to home as an hour.

I suspect the heavily cambered roads of rural Tayside haven't done the outside of my Marathon Winters any good. Down by a good six studs on the right hand side, which I think I would have noticed if it had happened already, but I am an idiot, so perhaps not.

My sister's in Broughty Ferry, so if she's finished work by then I might detour to hers for a fuel stop(she can be relied upon not to ruin the surprise) and that sets me up nicely for the back road, which I know pretty well.

Sounds like a good plan! Here's Dundee council's own cycle map which shows various routes through the city. Yellow streets are quieter, as with the Spokes maps. I doubt heading straight up Forfar Road will be the best option unless you want to mix it with fast traffic.

For when post-lunch boredom sets in, here are some cycling routes round about Forfar and further afield.

I'll be taking the wintersaurus oop north now. The plan is currently to have my sister pick me up from Dundee train station in her estate car, but the idea making me giggle is to phone ahead and say I slept in and will be a few hours late, and thus arrive in sunny Forfar on the bike, to surprise of automotive family.

Cyclestreets puts a cruising balanced journey at 19.5 miles, which is by far the longest single journey I've taken, but I did that distance yesterday in the course of commute+2xArthur's.
