but they selectively block minor residential streets to cars but not to bikes, so that what's a minor dead end for cars is a useful through route for bikes. That could easily be done here too.

There is a road in stenhouse on a short route from my office to the school which is exactly like this as part of a recent development of housing. The dead end is used as a car park but not big deal, ,and there was a massive crane left at this dead end. ,not a crane, a riser thing for street lights or gutters but I was able to get around it you will be relieved to know. one swallow doesn't make a summer as Courtney love used to say.

Now we just have plagues of potholes.

There's dreadful potholes on Bruntsfield Links that can be traced back to the 1600s. Someone should report them to Clarence. Council can come along and dump some loose tar and gravel in them and tamp them down with a garden rake, like they did on Melville Drive.

Do you know how long it is since Back to the Future came out? In three years we should be using hover bikes.

Probably not worth thinking about.

Dave H says there are bumps in Woodlands Rd, Glasgow, which can be traced to the tram tracks being lifted 50 years ago.

A ridiculous over-reaction. In case anyone reading this is using it as the basis for deciding whether to take the cycling plunge can I just point out that pot-holes cause nothing more than a happy little trampoline style bounce and are even more fun when hidden under a puddle when they cause a delightful shower of droplets to cool you on a warm day. They do not, ever, cause broken bones.

Coaches and buses use it...as well as all of those Morningside tractors!!

Outside Gillespies at the front on Whitehouse Loan overlooking Bruntsfield links is just amazingly/remarkably bad, downright dangerous, with interesting tramlines although there are no official tracks, and I assume from the sheer volume of SUVs, MPV's and 4x4's that use it, because no buses go up it, dropping off their little darlings. It is an utter disgrace.

"In any case, there are almost never cars on this street, so the situation was never dangerous."

Ah yes, this whole "not many cars" thing they have over there. Other factors like quality of build and repair notwithstanding, that's why the NEPN is generally pothole-free but regular streets sport many.

Having seen what will be underneath the tarmac on Coates Place when it gets finished I have low hopes for it remaining smooth and fresh when buses and lorries return to it.
