Not a road as such, but closer to Edinburgh than Baldwin Street. Tulyar will recognise it, since he built this path and the bridge at the bottom.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_Street

"Many streets in the west of England and in Wales have reported slopes of 33% and higher. The street Ffordd Pen Llech in Harlech, Wales has a reported slope of 36.6% (rounded to 40% on the warning sign). Vale Street in Bristol is often also reported as the steepest street in Britain and hence may have a slope even steeper than 36.6%. However these roads are mostly shorter roads than those listed above, with far more frequent turns as opposed to the straight path of Baldwin."

It sounds like it's not a straightforward process choosing the road.

Of course turns can make it harder for the cyclist. Ffordd Pen Llech is one way with the direction of legal travel being downhill. I'm not sure I'd even attempt without some serious gym work to prepare plus checks on my poor heart.
Here's another list
https://www.merlincycles.com/blog/the-10-steepest-roads-in-the-world/

This is one of the challenges I used to do when I was young enough not to worry about heart explosions

Are folks still interested in this? I suspect we'll need to keep an eye on the weather as wet cobbles are unlikely to be particularly forgiving, especially when thoroughfares such as Ramsay Lane are involved...

Ronde stole my idea last Sunday, so I thought it only fair to join them. It was a nice day for it, and we did Gloucester Lane, Bells Brae, Royal Terrace, Arthur's Seat (twice), Victoria Street, Ramsay Lane (twice), Calton Hill amongst others (emphasis was on cobbles rather than steepness).

To add to the list for last year, it's a VERY short bit of actual steep road: The one that links Dumbiedykes with the Pleasance.

http://tinyurl.com/7pon7gc

It is preceded by the steep path too though!

It was my commute for a couple of years. Generally fine, but got through brake pads on the way down (and not really to be attempted when icy).

The following weekend is Paris-Roubaix, so we could throw in a few of Edinburgh's more "interesting" horizontal cobbled streets too. That might well work better for all concerned.

Either way, after the ride I'll be applying the traditional, tried and tested cobbled classics recovery method of drinking lots of Leffe and watching the pros hurting themselves.

I found a new route home for me - up Orchardhead Road

It's a delightful road even in the dark. The main reason is that I have to get up the Liberton hill anyway and this road is beautifully smooth and quiet.

Given that it's mid-May, it's only a month until Bike Week. Perhaps the 12 Steepest could be an event registered for BW? Imagine a critical mass of beginners trying to ride up Kaimes!

Calton Hill or Ramsay Lane are plenty steep, but not so long that your legs or lungs get a chance to start really burning. Kaimes on the other hand - the only way is up!
