Although arguably he didn't complete the full climb as he turned round before the usual hill climb tops out. (But that would be a bit mean).

If I was going to do it, I would go somewhere remote and nice to look at, to try to avoid the repetition. Bealach na Ba, Ratagan, Kylerhea, the Ross on Arran are all decent climbs I've done in shocking weather and would welcome the chance to do on a good day.

The last successful Scottish attempt I'm aware of was a borders rider on Ben Lawyers. https://everesting.cc/hall-of-fame/#/hill/5500939837

Newlands pass in the lake District might be a good option. 6km long and almost 200m of climbing. That's the northern approach which is the more scenic side too.

Interestingly the southern approach has been tackled successfully on 4 occasions but nobody has done the northern side yet.

Was thinking if I were to do it, I'd use the climb out of the back of Stow.

Can get the train out and back with a cafe at the bottom.

Quite steep to start with, but think you could stay in the saddle the whole time.

https://www.strava.com/segments/2616985

Granites seem like poor bang for buck looking at VAM per watt on my previous efforts.

Some good maths here on regarding why you don't want a shallow hill:

https://cyclinguphill.com/everesting-cycling-mount-everest/

"An average gradient between 6-10% would be best. You want to avoid something fairly flat, Cragg Vale would take ages because it’s only 3%.

Cragg Vale is 286 m height gain. But, 9.1km long (lap 18.2 km) 30 * 18.2 = 546 km

Hardknott Pass at 30% – 30 ascents of the 298 m climb. Done

Great Dun Fell – 635m – just 14 times. Shame about the two gates. Because that Everesting would require 54 jumps over gates in the road. Done!
The Rake – 101m – * 88 ! – But, a max gradient of 23%
Horseshoe pass – Wales – 311 m * 29 average gradient 5%, max gradient 10%"

I actually think that Kingscavil is too steep, especially on the descent. It will take some braking to turn before the bridge as this chap is doing. From my Strava, I was doing 45mph by the bottom by not braking.

I don't think there is an easy hill to climb it on. I've pondered about Corstorphine Bank Drive as a potential option that is not too steep but with a descent that would allow you to relax/recover on. It also has the benefit of an ever changing vista of people to keep the boredom away.

That's going to be hard.
I wonder what the optimal gradient would be. Too shallow and it will be too long (?), too steep and you will get tired too quickly? Not sure about what length is best either.
I would be tempted to do something at around 3-5%, like the Granites. From the Whitelaw Junction to the windturbine entrance is about 130 ascent and 3.5km. So about 68 ascents and 238km. Nice views though!

The only rule change I'm aware of is that GPS only tracks are now acceptable. Previously you needed a barometric measure.

You can only ride a loop if the climb is one way. Otherwise it's up and down all day.

Beech Avenue is 48m so that makes 185 ascents.

He is going up and down Kingscavil 122 times? Is that right? Incredible.

With Strava have they loosened the Everesting rules? Used to be closed a loop you had to employ or maybe that was just to relieve the tedium? Emma Pooley also just went up and down the Col.

How many reps of Beech Avenue would it be to count as Everest?

I did some quick back-of-the-envelope calculations and marvelled at her VAM [metres climber per hour] as well as her endurance. I realised I was disappointed to have missed a chance to tackle the record myself – because there was no way I could beat that time. Then I wondered where the hell that thought even came from, since I never wanted to do an Everesting anyway!

But by then it was too late. The seed was planted, and it grew fast. I wanted to see if I could do it and if I could even get close to that time.

strong women don’t want to be patronised with condescendingly easy rides

I strongly believe that women's events should be organised by women for women and we should keep our testicular distance.

That was a bit to epic to read all of it!

“

If we’re being totally reductionist, one could say that so is any kind of bike riding that’s not for useful mobility or transport of goods. Leisure cycling is just a waste of energy and an extra emission of CO2.

“

Yes

But

That assumes transport of goods is all ok!

More importantly (as ‘we’ understand) “Leisure cycling” is about so many things - not least life enhancing physical benefits and massive mental health ones.

I've just read that article. It's great. I particularly like the quotes:

Connie Carpenter-Phinney... said something along the lines of: “It’s a privilege to be able to choose how you suffer – not everyone has that choice. Some people have their pain forced upon them.”

and

I didn’t take up cycling to just watch other people take on stupid challenges and consider myself inferior. If there are stupid challenges out there, I want to be doing them too! Yes, it’s fun and inspiring to watch great sporting performances, but they inspire me to try to do likewise – not spend three weeks on the sofa watching on. Beating myself up against my limits until I feel suffering is a privilege, it makes me feel happy and in a strange way, more alive. And I strongly believe that this desire for challenge is just as strong in women as in men – it’s just less commonly portrayed as a societal norm.

That’s why sport is empowering, maybe even more so for women than men. Yes, cycling needs to be accessible to beginners – but not all female cyclists are beginners, and strong women don’t want to be patronised with condescendingly easy rides. They also want to challenge themselves.
(emphasis mine)
