Since I've been using the cycle path on the road I've been hankering more and more to the commuting without water proof clothes and reflective strips etc.

Tempted to replace my metro messenger bag with a "trendy" looking pannier (like a shoulder bag).

Any one tried these sorts of things out?

I'm starting a new job at Sughton House end of April, and will be commuting in from Dunbar.

My intention is to keep a bicycle at the station.

Suggestions on reasonable routes from Waverley to Saughton House gratefully received.

Last week I was in Tokyo and was impressed to see the tremendous increase in the number of people commuting to work by bicycle. The last time I was over there, 2009, it was mostly children using bicycles. I asked a Japanese friend what had suddenly caused so many adults to take to their bikes? It certainly wasn't an increase in Dutch style infrastructure, as all I could see was an increase in shared use pavements ans painted on bike lanes on the roads. (TBF the Tokyo police may have enforced the rules around the bike lanes). My friend said the biggest driver for the change was financial. The Metripolitan and national governments had consistently increased taxation on VED, fuel duty, and parking until most ordinary folk found the hardship outweighed the facility of owning a car. Add to this the best public transportation system in the world, numerous "go green" public information adds and the fact that hybrid bikes, complete with mudguards rack and kick stands start at about £60 brand new, it looks as if a sea change is beginning to change Tokyo to a greener more pleasant place.

TractorFactory on "Mileage of the Freewheel Mechanism..."

On my commute in the other morning, my freewheel mechanism went. Something has crunched inside it and it's gone all clunky. Having just bought the bike new back in June, I've taken the wheel back to place of origin who've said they'll strip it down to find out what's gone wrong with it.

I was wondering what other people's experience with this is. Have you ever had the freewheel mechanism fail on you and at what sort of time period or mileage?

I do a fair bit of mileage (which I'll probably have to work out for when they get back to me), average 21 miles a working day.
