I would like to take the opportunity to start a thread where we can give thanks for a hassle free and wholly pleasurable day's riding.

Yes, it was utterly baltic this morning and my new Northwave Touring shoes with "airflow system" were a bit of a liability in that the coldest temperature ever recorded in the UK was between my toes at 820AM. However it was clear and still and bright, with a full moon still in the sky and with some frost on the ground and ice collecting in the hollows, it was truly beautiful and the sort of day when I rode to work with a big smile on my face.

Hurrah.

Hi all,

Attached is my dissertation questionnaire for commuters by bicycle in the City of Edinburgh. I am an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen and I would be very grateful if you could spare 2 minutes to complete my short survey. It is completely anonymous and therefore no personal details required.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdTg480Cxt75CN22iU-7N5arkc8Az4-7bBoy0sRkh7XJ7MAow/viewform

Much appreciated,

kaputnik on "Facilities for commuters - how does your employer treat you?"

We (bikeists) often moan about the weather, kit, taxi drivers, potholes etc. but there is another aspect to commuting which is how our employers treat (or otherwise) us in terms of facilities. I thought there might be some merit in starting a general comparison / discussion on the subject. What is it essential to have provided? what is it nice to have? what are the downright extravagances and luxuries some more enlightened employers provide us with?

So, welcome to my work. I won't name them as they're so paranoid this is probably a sackable offence.
The basement is currently off-limits to cars, so I have the whole place to myself. The bike racks aren't the best, but they are racks and you can lock a bike to them, so who am I to complain!

The kit room is warm and dehumidified. Wet gear will dry during the day and be warm and dry for the ride home. lockable cages (albeit too small to get a coat-hanger inside!) for more prized possessions you might fear for. This is a matter of trusting your colleagues I suppose.

Showers. Quite public for the more modest, but plenty hot and plenty flow.

Changing and locker space. A locker is yours for as long as you can spare the £1 to release the key. Note also the radiator which has controls you can access! Elightened!

My only complaint is the lunchtime football players who use these facilities (rather than those for the sports pitches), leave them filthy afterwards and hog the lockers! It clearly says "cycle changing rooms" on the sign on the door!

Hello folks, I am looking for some advice.

I have a new job out at Riccarton and cycling seems to be much the most direct and quickest route as I can mostly use the canal path. The problem is that whilst I can cycle, it's been about 25 years since I did, so I know absolutely nothing about cycling!

Looking at bikes on the various shop websites there seems to be a lot of options, hybrids, road bikes etc. I am hoping that besides commuting I might be able to use the bike to get out a bit more in the future, a friend recently did some cycling on forest paths up North and that sounds pretty great :-)

So what kind of bike should I be looking for? Any recommendations as to makes or models? I will go I to the shops to buy it and I know they will give advice, I'd like to have some ideas though, so I don't just have to rely on the sales people. I am using the cycle to work scheme so I have up to £1000 but would prefer to spend less rather than more, though I don't mind paying to get a bike that will last for a while.

Any advice would be appreciated :) thank you.

I wanted to say hi to the forum. We arrived in Edinburgh in August and are all enjoying the city. My 8yo son and I now do the school commute by bike, and I ride mostly around the city these days (sometimes along the John Muir Path). My project is converting an older MTB for streamlines urban use, so I may have some questions for those of you more experienced in that area. (Existential question: is it possible to build up a really good all-around commuting/touring bike based on an old CrMo MTB frame?)
I used to mainly ride road-style, and I'd like to join for a ride sometime.
Also, I found a pair of in-ear headphones, likely dropped by another cyclist on Carrington Road along Fettes College--posted a found ad on Gumtree, but let me know if you lost these.

I'm starting to commute from Fife to Edinburgh, and want to leave my bike somewhere near the south side of the bridge, such as the south terminal or Ferrymuir. Does anyone know of a bike rack/shed in the area?

Hi all,

Been lurking for a while and decided to take the plunge.
I'm looking to start cycling to work and first things first, need a bike! Never really bought one before so I'm not sure where to start... I'm thinking of going for a Hybrid - I'd be riding about 7miles round trip each day from Liberton to the West End, and also going out and about now and again at the weekends. Quite keen to go out along the union canal, down the river from Mussy to Dalkeith, that sort of thing.

I'm thinking I'd be wanting 700c wheels but not sure after that. My employer offers the Cycle to Work scheme but the bike would have to be bought from Halfords, so looking at their range I think the Carrera Crossfire 2 or Voodoo Marasa would be the type of thing I'm after - £250-350 price range. I would far rather buy from a small/local place if I can get something decent for a similar price, and take the hit on not getting it tax free, but everything I've seen in shop windows has been £500+ which is more than I can afford at this (very early) point in my career. Any guidance would be most welcome!

Secondly, I was wondering if anyone can advise on the best route to take without getting mauled by a bus? I was thinking of heading down Kirk Brae, up the hill past Kings Buildings, along Blackford Road and down through the Grange and Marchmont, to go across the Meadows. Google's suggested route of riding down Liberton Brae, Newington Road etc seems rather intimidating to me... What would you good people suggest in that regards?

Thanks very much in advance

"The traffic was crazy and everyone was like, 'I have been here for an hour, and I'm staying like eight minutes away',' 15-time Grand Slam champion Williams said. "I'm like, 'OK, I'm not going to make my match'.
"So I asked for a golf cart, and the hotel didn't have a golf cart. Then they were like, 'We have a motor bike'. I'm like, 'I don't do motor bikes'.

"They said, 'We have a bicycle'. I said, 'I really don't do bicycles, but I will today'.'

Hi there folks.
Just moved to Edinburgh a few weeks ago to start term two down at The SAC at Kings Buildings.
I've been driving the route since I got here but since the steering in the car has started to go and I've put on some podge for the first time I decided it's time to get fit and rolling.

Up to a year ago I was BMX'ing a heck of a lot but since my wrist decided to die on me I had to give that fun lark up.

So on Saturday I popped along to the Bike Station and got my self an EBC Cullin. My first hardtail and although the suspension is too soft and it's a bit too small (or so I've been told) it's great fun to ride.
Had my first cycle that afternoon and went from Caledonian Crescent up to Kings Buildings and even with my asthmatic lungs I got there quicker than it takes me to drive.

I really hadn't noticed how slow the traffic moves down Morningside until I was speeding past it all.
Only had one idiot that day overtake me justto cut me off as he pulled into a junction.
I think I'm going to enjoy it here and I have at least 4 years of Edinburgh life ahead of me so I better.

Cheers Folks.

With the colder weather slowly encroaching upon us, don't forget that your bike needs a bit of extra TLC to keep it running slickly and smoothly through the winter.

Basic winter maintenence classes are starting on Mondays, from 6-8pm at the Bike Station to teach you the skills you need to keep your bike in tip-top condition. The class fee is £10, and this includes a can of de-greaser and either a set or mudguards or lights.

If you are interested in attending a class then please contact Esther Halcrow at esther@thebikestation.org.uk or 0131 6628970 for more details and to register for a class.

Was somewhat confused this morning, sat on the Glasgow Edinburgh train when a nice young lady got on the train (at Linlithgow iirc).
She had an Apollo 21spd mountain bike, and had ensured she had a decent h****t and a hi-vi waistcoat.

What I found amazing was that despite spending probably around £30 on a plastic bunnet and sourcing the waistcoat she had no lights at all! (and the rear reflector though fitted was pointing at the sky)

I know we don't all travel in the dark, but even when we got off at Haymarket (about 0720) it was sufficiently dark I had both lights on. Surely fifteen/twenty quid on some led's would be money well spent? Or is it me that's missing the point?!?

To enable a quick commute to work in the city centre, the Bike Station has teamed up with Essential Edinburgh to provide all day secure cycle parking in St Andrew Square!

You'll be able to leave your bike securely locked up from 8am to 6pm.

Dr Bike will be there from 8am to 12pm to fix minor problems such as brakes and gear cables on your bike, and the coffee shop in St Andrew Square will offer a 5% discount to anyone who uses Dr Bike!

Come along and let our Dr Bike service your bike for free, and get some journey planning advice and cycle maps. If that isn't enough to tempt you - we also have free home-made cake for everyone that joins us!

Hope to see you there!

I seem to recall someone on here complaining about EBC selling commuting bikes without essentials such as mudguards and racks... looks like they must read the forum too ;-))
