Possibly the opposite but was up in Banchory seeing the in-laws which is now largely 20mph and....drivers actually follow the speed limits. Going at my usual 23-24mph indicated where I'd have cars behind me so close up my bumper I could see what the driver had for breakfast and I'm pulling away, requiring a minor adjustment to my driving habits.
A welcome, if slightly unnerving experience. Also when out on the bike on the whole the drivers passed wide and safe, only one close pass of note.

Mainly taxis and drivers who ignore the Closed signs as err it isn’t closed, there is one barrier at the Grassmarket end - I watched a car stopped at it but after a cyclist went round it so did the car. Two barriers at the Pleasance end but the guy in the van just moves it to let you through.

There was one big transit van that was probably delivering theatrical equipment to sneaky Pete’s or other venue. Or maybe just driving through as it isn’t closed.

Further FOI - how much did you spend on advertising saying the Cowgate is closed when it isn’t closed?

I would also ask:
Are there supposed to be some sort logistics-hub-style arrangements or delivery time restrictions for the loading and unloading of Fringe-related substances and paraphernalia, or were the six different angry psychopaths blocking various sections of Buccleuch Street/Potterow with their diagonally-slewn vehicles last Thursday all following official guidelines?

This morning I too encountered someone using their mobile phone whilst driving. I managed to remember the colour of the vehicle and the branding on the door, and vague details of the driver, but I was in disguise as a bus passenger so couldn't make out things like registration. Nonetheless I have written to the company to remind them of the law.

I would like to ask

1 How closed is the Cowgate?
2. With this man6 cars being driven through the semi-permeable pedestrianism d space in the Cowgate are you not worried there is going to be an accident?
3. If you are closing a street why cant you close the street?

Driver of a 'DMG Services' white pickup reg DMG 2X was ahead of me through a busy grassmarket around midday. Failed to stop at a zebra crossing for someone about to cross, repeatedly and obviously looking at lap to use mobile phone, and then stopped fully in the bike box as I waited in it to turn right down Lady Lawson St.

Oooooh weeee he did not take kindly to my patter of 'nice bike' and subsequent pointing out of the bike box. The kind of seething, bile-ridden "see you, you have a nice day pal" that barely masks a coke habit and a tendency to scale lampposts with a saltire to cable tie up there. Looked up their website and it turns out he's the founder, naturally. Still debating whether to review-bomb them on Google Maps.

As he drove away I shouted "you're not coming to my birthday party". It's only fair he's warned now.

Yeah - mental out there today. A private hire car almost u-turned into me on Balcarres Street. Not sure if he didn't see me, or thought a mere cyclist would simply stop in the middle of the lane and in the traffic flow to let him pull out - either way, it was pretty close.

Witnessed someone driving down the wrong side of the road on Princes Street today, against the flow of traffic, just outside Waverley Mall. They tried to turn into South St David Street when the lights were red and nearly collided with a private hire car. After much beeping they did a turn in the road and went back towards Waterloo Place. Absolute madness! I can only assume it was a tourist.

Overall it was silly season out there today, had way more incidents than usual:
* Middle Meadow Walk bike lanes even more full of pedestrians weaving around than usual
* Had to dismount and push my Tern through the barriers at JPGS as three cars had parked across them and here was no room to get through
* Nearly got taken out when going north at Whitehouse Loan/Strathearn as someone going south and turning right, but not indicating, didn't seem to see me and just went for it
* Had to slow to a stop half way up the mound as a pedestrian jumped in front of me while someone else was pushing their bike up. Not easy to get started again with a 9 year old on the back!

In Longstone Sainsburys this morning, unlocking my bike after a fruitless visit in search of masking tape (Not the first choice of masking tape seller I know, but it was on the way home)

As I was unlocking I noticed a small red car parked across from me. Its numberplate was so illegal: not only was it made of 3D letters, but in this case it had been cut out around the letters, so it wasn't on a yellow rectangle but instead on a random bobbly shape.

I was grumbling inwardly about this when a woman and girl walked briskly from the supermarket and climbed into the car. As the car pulled out of the parking bay it uncovered a large wheelchair symbol on the ground. Neither the woman nor the girl showed any visible evidence of a disability, given the speed with which they had walked to the car, but I suppose there might have been a passenger with a disability already in the car...

Anyway, it's a shame that we don't have the number of traffic police on the roads that we used to, because they could legitimately pull the car for its numberplates, and who knows what else they might find...

I was close passed by a driver on London Road this morning, which was bad enough that I'm considering testing out the new police reporting system.

I was in the right hand lane, as I was going straight on and the left lane is for left turns only. The driver passed me without leaving the lane, maybe a foot of space. Bad enough but itself, but the two hands on the phone and none on the steering wheel were what really, really annoyed me.

Update on this from the previous page.

I reported to the police, who sent a notice of intention to prosecute to the car's registered keeper, who told the police that a relative was driving. Six months later the police were unable to ever speak to the alleged driver, as they simply didn't answer the door when police visited. They are apparently sought for a number of unrelated matters, but none of which were of a nature that the police could/would force entry to their house.

I don't believe that the relative was actually driving (based on gender and age). The police officer dealing with it told me that, had they been able to speak to the relative, then either the relative would have been charged with careless driving or the owner would have been charged with failure to identify the driver.

As six months have passed since the incident, the issue is now time barred and no action will be taken against either the registered keeper or their relative.

Something's clearly wrong in the system here.

On the other hand, the DESC reporting system worked relatively well. The process is smoother and simpler than it used to be. It's not as smooth and simple as the portals available elsewhere in the UK, though.

Not sure why car transporter guy would be going up the Mound to get to or from there though...

Maybe we need a CALCT (Campaign Against Long Car Transporters)?

Where's the nearest car dealership to Princes St anyway? Seafield Road? I think there was some small niche/expensive ones out Roseburn way but not sure if they still exist..

He would have driven past a "no entry except for trams, buses, taxis and cycles" sign in the process.

It seems unlikely that a satnav would have tried to send him that way. He'd probably have been better off turning right on to St David Street, along George Street and then down Hanover Street to access the Mound (any half way decent satnav should be able to work out that route). And it would be no more wiggly for accessing Market Street than going over North Bridge, which would also require negotiating a pretty tight turn in to Market Street from either North Bank Street or Jeffrey Street.

Regent Road seems to be a very common place for car transporters to be parked overnight.

I assume the driver was supposed to turn on to North Bridge, but messed up and tried to take the first seemingly available exit.

The missus was pedestrianising along Princes Street this morning when she witnessed the driver of a car transporter with twelve cars on board attempting to turn left from Princes Street (where he had absolutely no business to be) in to the Mound. He was struggling with the tight turn, while also sounding his horn at pedestrians who had the cheek to cross the road in front of him when their the green man was illuminated. Meanwhile, he was blocking the approach to the junction, much to the obvious annoyance of westbound bus and taxi drivers.

ISTR Gembo complaining recently about massive car transporters in the New Town (I tried Google but it once again failed to find what I was looking for.) Maybe it was one of those, with the driver in this case handicapped by both an inability to navigate, and to observe road signs.
