Critical Mass Ride -Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 3 pm – 5pm

Middle Meadow Walk

The organiser has been in touch with the police and this is their message:-

“Can I also take the opportunity to highlight the current Scottish Government guidelines/legislation in relation to COVID-19, and although this will have a limited impact on your event whilst you are cycling, at the start and end points, persons must adhere to the current legislation in respect of social distancing and number of persons allowed to gather in one group (currently a max. of 6 from a max. of 2 households, with Children under 12 not included in these numbers).”

“Movements need plausible leaders as well as competent organisers.“

One element of CM was always that the events were ‘spontaneous’ - ‘large numbers of people just happened to be in the same place at the same time (with their bikes).

This was partly due to the politics of ‘no leaders’ but also so that it was harder for the police to pick on and/or charge individuals as such gatherings were illegal, without permission, in many places. (Not an issue in Edinburgh.)

I don’t know if there has been any continuity between the various ‘batches’ of CMs in Edinburgh. I remember one time when someone came to Edinburgh as a student and revived it as they had been involved in CM in their home city.

Of the rule of 6 will make things more difficult!

If I understand correctly Critical Mass fell into the hands of some quite odd people in Edinburgh. Movements need plausible leaders as well as competent organisers.

Seems fitting that this thread has been untroubled for 10 years.

Critical Mass rides have never had many participants in Edinburgh.

It would be interesting to know how they have fared elsewhere.

Some places had MASS participation, including London where it probably helped in getting a change of attitude towards infrastructure.

I think CM has declined generally throughout the world, but no idea if it correlates with local improvements in individual cities.

Meanwhile Edinburgh is trying again on the 26th -

"In 1990, there were very few bicycles on the road, and today there is a mass of bicycles everywhere," he said. "It's a very big change between the last 20 years, and we have to change our planning decisions as well."

A friend tells me that my blissful "miracle on the QBC" might indeed indicate that a bit more enforcement is happening. More specifically, he contacted all his councillors a few weeks ago to complain about lots of vehicles illegally parked between the Bike Station and Meadow Lane; and received a lot of helpful replies promising that the parking enforcement contractor would be reminded to enforce the rules there. Round of applause!

It looks as if contacting your councillors can actually work and be thoroughly worthwhile. I'm pleased.

I thought for a second that was the Golspie crossroads, not Gillespie; was thinking, that's an exceptionally long commute even by CCE standards.

Nice and busy again today - it's great to have company on the way to work. And - miracle on the QBC! - this is the third day in a row when there has been no van, no taxi, nothing parked "for a minute" and blocking the cycle lane outside the Snax Cafe on Buccleuch Street (map). Am I suddenly God's Chosen Commuter or is there now some sort of actual law enforcement happening there?

ACtually more bikes than I passed people pretty much till I got to Cargo.

A bit surprised (in a good way!) as this is normally the time of year when many people stop cycling as it will now be completely dark when most people are going home.

Heading north on Causewayside this morning, when I was stopped at the Grange Road traffic lights, I saw a startling number of people waiting at the other side of the junction: I'd guess about two dozen folk on bicycles all heading south. And not intensely fit-looking sporty types either, these folk looked like they were on their way to work.

It's the first time I've ever seen such a crowd of people on bikes in Edinburgh and been irresistibly reminded of the Netherlands. Such a cheery sight! Despite all my moaning about the Quality Bike Corridor it seems that it's having some sort of effect.

Between the busy streets and CCE, it's lovely to feel like I'm not the only cyclist any more.

@ememka - likewise I never said I was unwilling to ride at night. I said I was unwillingly to ride in a group at night going deliberately slow with the objective of slowing up traffic. I also amn't up for riding in a mixed ability group in such circumstances. No thanks. I said I'd happily ride at night at a faster pace and with a different attitude to sharing the road with other users.
