“@chdot reassuring?”

Hope so.

“scruffy looking Surly tourer”

4 points

You have a good lock

All/mostly daylight in busy area.

Scruffy AND tourer

Surly - sorry but suspect majority of bike thieves don’t recognise it as ‘desirable brand’.

“well-developed sense of paranoia”

MAYBE NOT READ NEXT BIT

That’s exactly where I rescued a bike with a lock that had a broken key inside with an angle grinder.

Single passerby - “is that your bike?”

Me - “no”

I have done previously. The child seat wasn't nicked either. I made sure to use a rack at least one in from the end in case a car parked too enthusiastically against it.

Yeah, get in early and leave bike on city chambers racks, the ones nearest the door safest. But the others fine too. Look out for the gold statue and bench for General Macjek

Unhurt, you might alternatively use the racks at the City Chambers. Bit of a trek, but they're pretty safe.

There is cycle parking in Old College Quad. You should be able to access via the West College St entrance during jury service hours.

I was going to park my bike there when I had jury service some years back, but I just left it in the on street stands in the end. Anyway, the hair-raising tales in the court room made even Chambers St seem like a haven of peaceful tranquility.

Someone just tried & failed to steal a neighbour’s bike off our railing.

Left the railing bent. Thankfully made of steel, so didn’t break.

As for 'safe' - use multiple good quality locks. Assume anyone that wants to take it has big bolt cutters down their breeks.

The cycle layer on openstreetmap shows most bike racks, if you zoom in far enough: https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/55.9434/-3.1935&layers=C (Blue squares with a white "C" for large numbers of racks, wee blue squares for smaller groups.)

If there's a location without any which you think should have some, then send a request to the council's active travel team (activetravel@edinburgh.gov.uk).

Hi bramleyborn - The Edinburgh Council Atlas shows the location of all the cycle parking stands in the city.

Click on the layers list in the top right hand corner (looks like three bits of paper) click the search icon and then type "cycle parking" - tick "cycle parking" in the menu and (all going well) you should be able to see the lot.

You're in for a treat. Great commute, if crowded in summer rush-hour.

Where you at in town? Loads of on-street Sheffield racks and office parking.
