I watched I think eight members of the SRYT Massive this evening on Colinton bridge. They came in three groups, all in their safety balaclavas and Buffs, and demonstrating their mad wheelie skillz. They disappeared down the access road to the former Colinton station, whence they could have gone east or west.

Probably ought really to put SRYT shenanigans in the rubbish driving thread.

There are far too many instances of "I wouldn't have done that" to count these days, particularly if I'm heading south up Leith Walk past the end of London Road, but there was a fun moment a few weeks ago where a dingbat who was repeatedly skipping lights between Leith Walk and South Bridge (and casting no glances neither beside nor behind him at any point, including when wibbling blockingly up the middle of the Leith Street lane) claimed he was more safe doing what he was doing but had had to remove his earbuds to hear what I was muttering at him. I would have escaped him a lot sooner if I hadn't been on a VOI.

I have recently been presented with a few of his videos on various Meta platforms, which I have observed with the sound off. I'd've thought he would be more likely to be someone at whom abuse would be shouted, or have I been missing a critical and possibly explanatory component of his activities by not listening to them?

2 students on Voi bikes turning right out of Bristo Square then cycling in the wrong direction along the cycle lane i.e. against traffic. I managed to control my inner Bob Wilkie and avoided shouting abuse at them but if anyone cycling in the lane in the correct direction was likely to get a scare. Maybe we need signs saying 'Ride on the left' like they have near airports/ferries in the Central Campus area?

Yesterday's rubbish cycling was brought to you by one of the esteemed members of the SRYT. Wearing the regulation black safety balaclava and black clothes he absolutely caned it up Burdiehouse Road, under the bypass, blew two red lights and disappeared up the A701. A few minutes later he reappeared, absolutely caning it down the B702 to the A701 roundabout again, blew another red light and narrowly avoided giving several car drivers heart attacks, and accelerated away down Burdiehouse Road again at 30-40mph.

[Rule 2]ing menace, and the Police seem to be either powerless to stop them or actively don't care.

A bit of a double whammy on my ride back from SQ on Saturday on the shiny new 2-way segregated cycle path at Haymarket.
I'm cycling along into town and on the other side of the cycle path there's a Deliveroonie and a chap on a Voi Bike. The Deliveroonie decided to do a Deliveroonie thing and stop dead without warning in the middle of the lane to check his mobile right in front of the Voi bike. The Voi bike then overtakes the Deliveroonie and is now heading towards me on my side of the path meaning that I have to slam on the anchors to avoid a head-on collision! If I hadn't had a tingling Spidey-sense it could have been pretty nasty.

To the cyclist with a ginger beard who has twice in the past few weeks shouted 'get over' at me on the towpath near the bridge to the WoL path...

I've been riding the towpath daily since 2009, accumulating many thousands of trips, and you are the first person who has ever felt the need to shout that at me.

If you find yourself shouting it at other people too (and I suspect you might) then maybe look closer to home for the cause. I would respectfully ask to you ponder on whether bombing down the slope off the bridge over the canal and popping out onto the main towpath without, apparently, moderating your speed or, apparently, considering that maybe you are on the minor route and should be ceding priority to those on the major route, is the best approach to avoiding a collision in future. Speaking from long experience I'd say that people riding bikes on the towpath tend to ride in the centre of the path unless they see oncoming traffic in good time, in which case they move leftwards. If you are just going to pop out onto the towpath without warning, you may find that you don't give them time to move left as you so clearly want.

Just a thought, anyway...

Yesterday's rubbish cycling was the young-ish chap riding a Halfords special mountain bike-shaped object along the Brunstane Burn path just before 8am with no lights/high-vis/helmets/etc.

I'm not a member of the helmet/hi-vis police but the lack of lights along an unlit path with a generous coating of wet leaves seemed particularly reckless. He wasn't going very fast thankfully, probably due to not being able to see 10 feet beyond his front wheel.

Sorry to hear about your crash! If you haven't already get your hip checked out. I had a bad crash a few years ago which, although not broken, resulted in a large haemotoma and effectively stopped me playing football after that. I didn't know there was a shared-use path at Gowkley Moss but after this story I don't plan on using it anytime soon.

P.s.

Clearly an experienced cyclist like you was using the shared path on the reasonable assumption that it would be safer - particularly from the ‘you should be on the cyclepath’ brigade.

As you (and not enough people) know, cyclists don’t have to use paths or lanes.

I understand about resources/prioritises - which is why side roads and pavements don’t get gritted.

It took years for Spokes (and others) to get Edinburgh’s path network treated as a priority (or at all!) MidL need to understand it needs to do the same in key places.

I’ll completely understand if you don’t feel like contacting MidL.

My bike disappeared from underneath me this evening, at Gowkley Moss roundabout. The roads were fine and recently gritted but the shared path around it was an ice rink.

I landed hard on my elbow which is now sporting a gash that I have mopped up and bandaged, and the impact tore both my nice merino jersey that was a present and my old but good Goretex jacket. I haven't broken my hip but there is going to be a huge bruise there tomorrow. I also landed on my rucksack which contained some Christmas presents I bought this afternoon. My lovely brake levers that lasted 15+ years without a scratch now have one that is pristine and one that is all scraped to hell.

I'd report it to Midlothian but it's just not worth it.

Half a dozen road cyclists using the footway at the closed bit of the Duddingston Low Road. Most of them were fine - going slowly and prepared to stop. The one at the front was not going slowly and was also shouting "Get out of the way" at pedestrians.

First time in a long time that I've sworn at a cyclist, but it was justified. Wish I'd insisted that he apologise to the folk he'd shouted at.

Sorry to hear you got bashed up, neddie. I have had scary slides on that roundabout too. Report it to Midlothian Council, but I can tell you that they will take absolutely no action other than recording the incident in their database, even if you are injured.

I know this because I did a FOI to find out what action they took after I bruised and cracked my ribs in a fall on a roundabout that was similarly near a petrol station.

So the bike disappeared from underneath me on the tight roundabout outside the petrol station at the A1 / Old Craighall Rd this morning

Came down hard on my shoulder and now have a fragment of bone chipped off the top of the arm

Suspect there was a diesel spill there, mixed in with a bit of water

Even though no other vehicle was involved, I sort of want to report it, so it’s recorded and the powers that be hear that diesel spills cause injuries

I guess Midlothian council and Spokes should be informed, but who else?

@bakky good point plus nice new tarmac. I noticed many rocks have fallen off the castle cliffs and crushed the old fence. Thankfully the space has been created to cater for this.

Going the other way you have to push until South Bridge. But the Cowgate whilst having many frolicsome tourists is sort of shut to motors which is lovely.
