was me I'm afraid.

I pulled out at a roundabout when I really shouldn't have done. Luckily for me the taxi I should have given way to was going slowly and didn't hit me.

In my defence, I was very distracted by the idiot behind me whose driving was making me nervous.

Abstract. Introduction
Understanding of tram-system related cycling injuries (TSRCI) is poor. The aim of this study was to report the spectrum of injuries, demographics and social deprivation status of patients. Secondary aims included assessment of accident circumstances, effects of TSRCI on patients’ confidence cycling, together with time off work and cycling.
Methods
A retrospective review of patients presenting to emergency services across all hospitals in Edinburgh and West Lothian with tram related injuries between May 2009 and April 2016 was undertaken. Medical records and imagining were analysed and patients were contacted by telephone.
Results
191 cyclists (119 males, 72 females) were identified. 63 patients sustained one or more fractures or dislocations. Upper limb fractures/dislocations occurred in 55, lower limb fractures in 8 and facial fractures in 2. Most patients demonstrated low levels of socioeconomic deprivation. In 142 cases, the wheel was caught in tram-tracks, while in 32 it slid on tracks. The latter occurred more commonly in wet conditions (p = 0.028). 151 patients answered detailed questionnaires. Ninety-eight were commuting. 112 patients intended to cross tramlines and 65 accidents occurred at a junction. Eighty patients reported traffic pressures contributed to their accident. 120 stated that their confidence was affected and 24 did not resume cycling. Female gender (p < 0.001) and presence of a fracture/dislocation (p = 0.012) were independent predictors of negative effects on confidence. Patients sustaining a fracture/dislocation spent more time off work (median 5 days vs 1, p < 0.001) and cycling (median 57 days vs 21, p < 0.001).
Conclusions
TSRCI occur predominantly in young to middle-aged adults with low levels of socioeconomic deprivation, most commonly when bicycle wheels get caught in tram-tracks. They result in various injuries, frequently affecting the upper limb. Traffic pressures are commonly implicated. Most patients report negative effects on confidence and a sizeable minority do not resume cycling. TSRCI can result in significant loss of working and cycling days.

Hello

I don't really post on the forum but always read for good local knowledge on everything cycle related. So wonder if someone might be able to offer some advice.

I came off my bike at the beginning of the month resulting in a hip fracture and a hip pin operation. Prior to my injury I cycled around 100 miles a month as part of my commute. I am keen to get back on the bike ASAP and think that good physio will be key to getting back to where I was per accident. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to find a good physio experience in cycling related injuries in Edinburgh?

Now this is a different matter to cycling in the rain. I know a lot of die-hard cyclists who left the bike at home today. Not that I was one of them. Foolhardy? Perhaps, but the pedestrians seemed to be struggling with their brollies more than I was with the bike.

AND it should be a tailwind going home...

I enjoyed reading this this morning.

From the XKCD: What If? series : http://what-if.xkcd.com/

Question:
I bike to class sometimes. It's annoying biking in the wintertime, because it's so cold. How fast would I have to bike for my skin to warm up the way a spacecraft heats up during reentry?
—David Nai

Answer:
Reentering spacecraft heat up because they’re compressing the air in front of them (not, as is commonly believed, because of air friction).

According to this calculator, to increase the temperature of the air layer in front of your body by twenty degrees Celsius (enough to go from freezing to room temperature), you would need to be biking at 200 m/s.

The fastest human-powered vehicles at sea levels are recumbent bicycles enclosed in streamlined aerodynamic shells. These vehicles have an upper speed limit near 40 m/s. This is the speed at which the human can just barely produce enough thrust to balance the drag force from the air.

Since drag increases with the square of the speed, this limit would be pretty hard to push any further. Biking at 200 m/s would require at least 25 times the power output needed to go 40 m/s.

At those speeds, you don’t really have to worry about the heating from the air—a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests that if your body were doing that much work, your core temperature would reach fatal levels in a matter of seconds.

Mountain Biking Before Mountain Bikes
by Steve Griffith: Chairman of the Rough Stuff Fellowship

"Off road cycling... you mean mountain biking... everyone knows about that invented by the Americans in California in the 70's. Riders in bright coloured lycra speeding along tracks on bikes most VCC members wouldn't be seen dead on!!!"

The above is of course an extreme stereotype, nevertheless there is a widespread perception that off road cycling is a comparatively recent pastime and can only be done on a specialist i.e. mountain bike. This article attempts to outline the history of off road cycling and will demonstrate it has been an intrinsic part of cycling ever since the invention of the bicycle. A crucial point is that it can and has been done on almost any bike.

Defining terms: Until the 1980's off road riding was know as rough stuff or pass storming. The origin of the former is in opposition to smooth stuff (ie tarmac). Over the years there has been much debate amongst adherents of this type of cycling as to a definition. To my mind the simplest is perhaps the best:
"Rough stuff begins where the tarmac ends"

Or perhaps as put by Tim Hughes editor of the CTC magazine Cycletouring writing in the 1980's:
"To the dedicated rough stuffer there is no such thing as a dead end"
