The City of Edinburgh Health and Social Care Department has a volunteer support service. There are still several day centres for adults with learning disabilities in the city. At least one of those will have a cycling group. If you are interested in this type of activity that would be one place to start. For example Bonnington Road Centre used various bikes to explore the NEPN though that centre is now closed. Scotland Yard also had adapted bikes and lots of people happy to be passengers so they might be another place to look.

When I was running the Pedicabs we looked at front loaders as they're MUCH cheaper and lighter than the old 100kg maximum cycles bikes we all rode. The main issue with them is they're considered incredibly dangerous vehicles anywhere that isn't absolutely flat, main reason is that they need VERY good brakes otherwise hills can go very badly wrong. Also the people are out the front and are not well protected. Long story short we couldn't get them insured in Edinburgh, and the council wouldn't license them.

This is an awesome programme and I hope they manage it but Edinburgh has a few challenges when it comes to where you'd actually cycle the old people to...

Can't find any recent reference to the Portland scheme, shame if it had come to an end - they bought quite a few new trikes.

So many good ideas get "project funding" and then close when it runs out. People who initiate such things tend to have less interest in 'fundraising'!

Some schemes should just be run by councils or the NHS.

Clearly a good idea, but also need for a similar scheme where older people do some pedalling.

That's it. What we all want is people pedaling themselves right through their lives, staying healthy and confident enough to do that.

I could see me taking an older person for a ride through the Hermitage say, but most of Ediburgh is too dangerous, filthy or restricted to get a trike through easily.

We had an event with some adaptive bikes including side-by-side tandems in the park a few weeks ago. They were great, and massively popular. They're set up so that both sides don't have to pedal, so they can function as a rickshaw, or as a bit of exercise, or two people can pool their efforts. One pair who tried them out included a man aged 100 years old, who seemed to be having a great time. In fact, getting people off them was a bit of a challenge...
