There was a notice up about the fence not being safe and a bit of makeshift repair work.

Okayyyy...although Cllr Osler's tweet says that it still needs repairing! Apparently it's the hotel's responsibility. Maybe the cooncil just got bored of waiting for them to pull their finger out.

@ejstubbs: I think the section beside the hotel was closed because the wooden railings were, in technical terms, “a bit too shoogly”.

Thanks, looks like I was just unlucky to be wanting to go that way two weeks too soon.

Has it ever been explained why that section was closed in the first place?

That path is open from Roseburn Cliff to Dean Village. I walked it yesterday. Saw a heron at the big weir near Dean.

@ejstubbs The section behind the Britannia Hotel has been re-opened for a month or so.

"Anyone know whether the closed bit further west - the section that goes under Belford Bridge on the built-out metal walkway, that was closed all the way past the hotel, over the bridge and as far as the steps down from Magdala Crescent - is open yet, or if any date has been announced when it might be expected to open? That closure is rather more of a hindrance than the Dean Village one IMO, unless you enjoy humping your bike up or down steps. Basically, it makes the WoL path impractical by bike from Belford Bridge all the way to Roseburn."

A few weeks ago the path was open as far east as the bridge that crosses the WoL to Sunbury Place, and closed thereafter. Not sure if there has been any further reopening.

@chdot: That's the section I meant.

Till the spring, I think? Which was four years ago, and it was still closed when I went that way on 21st March this year. I've e-mailed the WoL Conservation Trust about it, since that seems to be the body which actively promotes the walkway.

Someone on the Facebook thread linked by Rosie above says that it's been open "for a while already". (I choose to doubt that until further evidence is available.)

EDIT: Ah, OK, I've just found an e-mail from the WoL Conservation Trust confirming that that section reopened "several weeks ago". I shall take a donder down that way in the next day or few to enjoy the experience of cycling unimpeded from Roseburn to Dean Village along the WoL once again.

From 4 years ago -

“There's a second closure too now - after the landslip detour, heading upstream, the path is closed from where it heads under the bridge at Belford Road. Till the spring, I think? Pedestrian detour in place, if you can do steps.”

I knew they had tried to fix this twice (can’t find thread here), but -

“

Work has now started for the fourth time to stabilise the bank above the Dean Village which has blocked the walkway to the Galleries along the riverbank. Time will tell whether this will be successful since the third attempt failed the day after completion.

“

The path at Dean Village is now open after all these years. It looks like a lot of reinforcing work has been done.
