Many of the comments on that article are disgraceful. It really does seem to be open season on cyclists at the moment.

If driving or in the passenger seat, I tend to use the wing mirrors to check before opening my door - in a lot of cars it seems to me the 'B' post (where the rear doors attach to on 4-door cars)/seat belt mounts/head rests prevent a genuinely clear view of what is approaching, especially close to the side of the vehicle?

I am not sure which hand I actually use but I check the wing mirror then look round too just to be sure.

I thought that the Dutch Reach sounded like a really clever idea until I realised I do it instinctively. Am I abnormal? I used to get told off by my parents for opening the door without checking for people (usually them!)

Apparently killing a cyclist by dooring only results in a small fine. Disgusting.

The campaign group says cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians are being injured and killed by drivers and their passengers carelessly opening doors.
It wants the Dutch reach - which involves opening doors with the "wrong" hand - to be taught to new drivers.
The Department for Transport says it will consider new messages on cycle safety as part of its Think! campaign.
Government figures from 2011-2015 show that eight people died from carelessly-opened car doors.
Three of these had been travelling in cars - five were cyclists knocked off their bikes.

Motorists can be killed in this way too it appears.
