was brought to you by the lady doing a right turn from the western approach on the drumbrae roundabout while not indicating and talking on her mobile.

Gah. It's not like it's a hugely busy roundabout or on a major route or anything.

At the end of my tether with drivers on mobiles. I walk or cycle from Blackford Pond to Comiston Road to Canaan Lane and back on the school run most days and every single day I see at least one person on their phone while driving, usually more. I've gotten into a shouting match with drivers a few times, including yesterday with someone on Comiston Road who was using their phone AND smoking while edging up the queue outside the school, each time leaving the classic "WhatsApp gap" and then coming perilously close to the car in front as they accelerated forward, all just as they got to the traffic lights where kids at SMPS cross. I usually let it slide but when it's in front of a school I often feel I should say something. Probably shouldn't, especially as the kids are with me... though they're used to it now!

It's all fruitless though, I know it, as very few drivers would change their behaviour based on a random man in the street telling them to stop, and the chances of them being caught by the police are incredibly low. Without a reporting portal, what can I actually do?

Is it worth filming them and reporting to the police, or is that unlikely to result in any action? I feel like with the scale of it there's little point...

I noticed this story on the BBC yesterdaybut forgot to post it. Drivers were watched at certain locations to check for mobile phone use and it was found that more of them seemed to be texting or on the internet that making a call.

Among car drivers, 1.4% were found to be using a mobile.

I am at a loss to understand how they managed to get such a low figure. Perhaps they should try observing from the top deck of a bus instead as when I am up there I can see masses of drivers using their mobiles, sometimes several of them in a row. I reckon the figure is closer to 20%.

Someone I've known for years and who seems like a generally sensible, kind and considerate person just posted this in the comments of her own social media update. Worst thing is that everyone else is mostly agreeing that, indeed, it's a good thing the CAR wasn't damaged. Whereas all I can think of is what happens if someone driving 1+ tonnes of metal fails to stop at a junction I'm crossing because they briefly nodded off... I have left what I hope is a diplomatic but clear response. And of course now I feel like I'm being preachy! But, argh! This general notion that it's all just a bit of an oopsie to fall asleep in charge of a potentially deadly machine - is there any hope of changing it? What I really wanted to say, but didn't, is - if you're so tired that falling asleep at the wheel is a risk PLEASE GET THE BUS.

As I haven't had a proper night's sleep since last Thursday, I momentarily feel asleep at the wheel on my way to {appointment} this morning and hit a traffic island {...} - luckily there doesn't seem to be any damage to the wheel or tyre but I REALLY need to get a night's sleep!

I was out for a drive last night (no I was not topping up my tank)
As I drove and was passing cyclists I had a good hard think.
Is there an easy way to tell how much room I have in the lane to know how far out I can be?
Then the thought struck me - the white line in the road is where I want to be keeping my driver side wing mirror within. If I know where my mirror is in relation to the white lines I will know the line to take to leave as much space at all times so I lined the car up on a parking space white line (nice and long, no moving traffic. Noted where the line was along the bottom of the windscreen and looked out the window, repositioned car until I found the sweet spot (somewhere halfway between the edge of the wiper and the corner of the screen)
Now this will work for any driver in any car (obviously taking into account driver/seat height/position and different srivers in the same car) and could be easily marked on the screen with a tiny bit of tape (maybe one colour for each driver's setup)

Once drivers know this position on the road they can leave as much space as possible for cyclists when passing them or being passed when cyclist filtering

Interested to know the statistics of how many of us drive or not, how it affects you as a cyclist and driver.
I notice I give cyclists a lot more time and slow down behind them as I know full well if I pass them they will catch up with me at the red light. Hopefully this is noticed as helpful and not intimidating...
