As I went down the M6 in the dark last weekend I passed a small hatchback with what appeared to be a laptop propped up on the dash and there was a movie or TV show on it. There was only one person in the car.

Yes I had the Tomtom turned on but on the run to London it's pretty much "Bear left in 200 miles". I used it on a bike too, put it in my shirt pocket and listened to it. Number One Son moved to Whitechapel and it's not a part of town I know well. Crystal Palace OTOH is easy to find because you can aim for the transmitter mast.

Tee hee, I was hoping for a bit of an argument, but he's hopelessly weak.

"Logic only works when you are objective" - oops! Undereducated much?

It's pretty funny how hung up he is on this lycra thing too. Does he not realise that CityCyclingEdinburgh is pretty much* a lycra free zone, and we compete at the cafe to be the most normally dressed?

We've had plenty of reports of dangerous or inconsiderate driving from ADIs in Edinburgh. I can't help wondering whether this guy would be one of them, or if he manages to swallow his small-minded rage when he's actually on the road.

What I enjoy about this guy is that a lot of his posts are pretty good (for instance, this one on mobiles) where he's telling his colleagues to HTFU and stop letting their pupils drive into cyclists), but when it comes to cyclists themselves - BANG. It's a bit like when you realise your favourite neighbour is a frothing racist who wants to 'send them all back home' when they aren't talking to you about trying to keep the local library open ;-)

* of course, it doesn't matter what you wear, so long as you do ;-)

*not including the presumably large section of it that is CCE folk looking for giggles.

He's using that thing the IAM did with their poll where a premise like "a majority of cyclists probably do at least one of these on most of their journeys" is presented in a way which a lazy read might interpret as 100% GUARANTEED SOLID FACT that EVERYONE does ALL OF THEM ALL THE TIME, deliberately and maliciously.

I wondered about that too, cb. If he calls our cosy wee group 'a lot' then his usual readership must fit in a good-sized canoe. Bless his little cotton socks.

Reading between the lines of the bio and other pages, it sounds like he's struggling to keep the wolf from the door, as well as plainly not being the happiest of people in general.

I think we should all be *really* offended by the piece, just to help out; brighten his life up a bit?

Interesting article because it straddles a couple of stereotypes while defying others. For instance: "I can guarantee now – absolutely 100% guarantee – that not one learner driver out there thinks cyclists just bounce when they get hit by a car ... I can similarly guarantee that not one learner thinks it’s OK to run over one"

Not one, really? Because when I learned to drive I had a pretty intolerant attitude towards slower road users for a start...

yet we're told that his list of misdemeanors (some of which are offences) is

"absolutely 100% accurate applied to the vast majority of cyclists. Most cyclists do at least one of these things every time they go out,"

Stereotype much? It's tempting to write off this sort of stuff as weakminded Daily Hail material, but there are interesting nuggets to glean all the same:

"most probably aren’t even aware they are wrong or causing inconvenience. The rest know exactly what they’re doing and don’t care."

You see when your worldview is twisted just so, it somehow makes sense that people should care that they are inconveniencing their betters and do something about it (even though mostly cyclists are just motorists who are too smart or simply can't be bothered to sit in queues).

So yes, if the fifty-odd cyclists I see on my commute were holding up the author by taking their cars that would be fine, but because they left them on the drive they "know and don't care" that they are causing inconvenience.

Might see if I can drum up the energy to do him a response.
