Wilmington's Cow on "Edinburgh Bike Shops"

Have we done this before? What are your impressions of the bike shops in Edinburgh?

For my part:

Edinburgh Bike Co-Op
Looooaaaads of stuff and generally very friendly and enthusiastic staff. But can be a bit hard to get a member of staff when it's busy, and there's no particularly obvious 'queue here to pay' kind of thing that somewhere so busy probably should have (yes, I know they have counters, but they're not always manned and you wind up hanging about like a spare part. There's a fairly hefty mountain biking bias as well.

I have to say I reckon the servicing can be a little patchy. Most of what I've heard is secondhand, but a few years back I put my MTB in as I just didn't have the time. When it came back it felt worse than before and I ended up redoing everything a couple of weeks later.

Velo Ecosse
Not used them much, given the proximity to the Bike Co-Op...

Bike Trax
Such a nice range of bikes, I could spend an hour just window shopping those. Quite a limited range of parts, but usually at decent prices and the staff are friendly and helpful - except on one occasion when I was told that a certain type of brake lever wouldn't work with a certain type of brake, which was completely wrong.

MacDonald Cycles
Always feels very 'yoof' and I tended to avoid the place - very very limited bits and bobs range. Last time I went in, though, I got served by a very nice young chap. Slightly odd that bikes seem to be serviced out in the shop floor.

The Edinburgh Bike Chain
Only used them once, years ago, to install a headset. And a very good job they made of it, and were very very happy to stop and chat about the planned build. Nice shop as well, felt airy and open. I don't really ever have cause to go by (I used to live in Trinity so had a route into town past it), so can't comment on the last few years!

The Bicycle Works
Hit or miss depending on who you get serving you! But, they tend to have those parts that no-one else has (save one place to come) AND (this being the big bonus) they're open relatively late meaning a stop ont he way home from work is possible.

Bike Station
Old parts galore in the refurbished premises - utterly chaotic place, but a joy if you're into your old bikes, or just bringing bikes back to life!

Not been to the Leith Cycle Co. or Eastside Bikes (still up for sale?) or BG Cycles, so can't comment on those.

We've got the whole gamut though. Edinburgh Bike Co-Op is sort of the Asda Walmart of bike shops, down to the locally-sourced organic Bike Station. We're kinda spoilt for choice really.

Hi all,

Attached is my dissertation questionnaire for commuters by bicycle in the City of Edinburgh. I am an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen and I would be very grateful if you could spare 2 minutes to complete my short survey. It is completely anonymous and therefore no personal details required.

I am hoping I’m not alone in foolishly piling up bike gear for vague future use. Right now, I have two sets of Velo Orange 26 inch x 60mm mudguards, one steel, one aluminium, with the mounting hardware. I also have used but decent condition Tortec chromoplast style 700 x 35mm guards which won’t fit with the 30c tyres I’m trying to use.
I’m looking for somethling like the Velo Orange or Gilles Berthoud 700 x 42mm guards if anyone happens to have some new or used ones.

Hello folks,

I've popped up bits and bobs about this on other threads, but with only four weeks to go I wanted to highlight the Edinburgh Cycle Challenge that is coming to the city on the 1 - 21 March. I am working on this project, hence my interest in encouraging participation.

What is it?
A free cycle challenge to encourage more people within workplaces to try riding a bike. Employers compete against each other to see who gets the most people on bikes for just 10 minutes or more.

How does it work?
Sign up for free on the website. Encourage colleagues to sign up. Log a bike ride for 10 minutes or more, anywhere you want, from 1 – 21 March and win some cracking prizes. You can sync up Strava, Moves, Mapmyride etc or manually log on the site itself.

Why sign up?
If you're on this forum chances are you're already a keen cyclist. Be rewarded for travelling on two wheels with some excellent prizes, including a beautiful Gazelle Esprit city bike from Hart’s Cyclery, B&B stay at the Cramond Mill, lunch for four, hand-made Wee Cog saddlebag, Endura cycling glasses, tickets to the Edinburgh Festival of Cycling, bundles of Route clothing, Spokes maps, photography workshops from Rich Dyson, and plenty more still to be confirmed. See the prizes on offer.

As well as this, the challenge is a great opportunity to get folk out on a bike who've been out of the saddle over winter or for longer. A ten minute ride is achievable for most people, and on average, around 40% of non and occasional cyclists start to ride their bikes more regularly after the challenge so it's well worth encouraging people to get involved.

Who can do it?
If you live or work in Edinburgh you’re eligible to sign up. You can sign up as part of a business or as an individual.

Anything else?
This challenge is all about participation, not miles. Whether you log one 10 minute ride for a pint of milk or a hilly century, you can win a great prize.

I'd be delighted to see CCE-ers get involved and encourage others to participate. You can drop me a line on claire.c@lovetoride.net or via the forum for info, posters, copy, images or anything like that if you'd like to promote with your work and friends :)

More info at http://www.lovetoride.net/edinburgh

Join us for the launch of online exhibition Lost+Found in Edinburgh, hosted by The New Metropolitan web magazine and featuring images of the city’s quirky and contested places. Our panel will display and discuss the exhibition—curated from images created and collected by the people of Edinburgh—and debate what it means to inhabit Edinburgh today.

We invite you to participate in this lively evening forum with humanities researchers, creative practitioners, urban activists, policy makers and fellow citizens to explore how we can go past the official and touristic images and narratives of Edinburgh, to tell stories and make images of our own.

By grounding our imagination and lived experience in humanities research, the panel will expose often ignored divisions across Edinburgh, responding to the contradictions and inequalities of contemporary urban citizenship.

This event is in partnership with The University of Edinburgh’s Institute for the Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Being Human: the UK festival of the humanities.

Just read this article about the lack of transport, as opposed to sporty, bikes in retail in Vancouver. An interesting read:

"Lack of transport retailers a barrier to everyday biking in Vancouver"
http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/09/lack-of-transport-retailers-a-barrier-to-everyday-biking-in-vancouver/

This strikes a chord with me. I ordered a Dutch bike online last Christmas, so didn't have a chance to test drive it, and after riding it for nearly a year I realise I probably wouldn't have bought this particular model if I had given it a test ride, for a variety of reasons I won't go into here.

Anyway, I think with a bit more research I might have found something closer to home, but am interested in the opinions of others here. Are there retail outlets in Edinburgh and environs for an affordable (£300-£400) everyday bicycle?

I wanted to say hi to the forum. We arrived in Edinburgh in August and are all enjoying the city. My 8yo son and I now do the school commute by bike, and I ride mostly around the city these days (sometimes along the John Muir Path). My project is converting an older MTB for streamlines urban use, so I may have some questions for those of you more experienced in that area. (Existential question: is it possible to build up a really good all-around commuting/touring bike based on an old CrMo MTB frame?)
I used to mainly ride road-style, and I'd like to join for a ride sometime.
Also, I found a pair of in-ear headphones, likely dropped by another cyclist on Carrington Road along Fettes College--posted a found ad on Gumtree, but let me know if you lost these.

Feeling like a bit of exploring, I did this route yesterday: http://www.strava.com/routes/976241
The first half was pretty good. Trying to get onto the path by the Esk at Musselburgh was stupidly complicated. There's an almost-path going from the far north foot bridge to the start of the path, but it doesn't go all the way. Had to double back a few times.
The section from Whitecraig to Dalkeith was fantastic - wide, smooth tarmac. It was empty, so while being a great bit of path, it doesn't seem to serve much purpose. Maybe people use it to commute?
Then the nasty bit - coming out of Dalkeith the bike infrastructure just stops. The shared use path becomes vague. I found it on the opposite side of the road, then sailed down to the Sheriffhall roundabout, and a "Cyclists Dismount" sign. Just where the road needs cycle infrastructure most, it has none. I did a bit of vehicular cycling and got round it fine.
The stretch into town was very mixed. Some half decent painted lines, but they also seem to end at junctions, where they are needed most. A few lanes than thin out to about 1ft in parts - just lethal. The Cameron Toll roundabout is the same - bikes are directed onto the pavement, then, nothing. No indication of where we are meant to go. I had to get back onto the roundabout to get around. The last leg into town was fine, apart from car parking in the bike lane, and drivers stopping in ASLs.
Altogether a decent sample of Edinburgh's cycling infrastructure. Half exciting, half frustrating.

Hello, I would like to get myself a pair of cycling sunglasses (the once's with inserts) for my commute. I have found lots of place online but wonder if anyone here had used an optician in Edinburgh where I could buy from the shop instead of online. I am not really looking to fork out the cash for the big brand names like some of the bigger places appear to do! Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

Hi all, it seems like a very common occurrence at the moment, but I've had three bikes stolen over the weekend. One was an ancient Land Rover bike (Brown) worth about £50 The second a Carerra Vulcan Ladies spec mountain bike. but they also took my pride and joy, a 2011 Scott Scale 20 Mountain Bike.

Taken from Liberton area, locked in a secure shed. It's quite a distinctive bike there won't be many of them about, and it also has my name (Ed Vickers) on the top tube (which I expect will be ground off or stickered over.) Please keep an eye open for me, although I'm not holding out much hope.

Here's the Scott

And the Flyer I've sent to most Edinburgh Bike Shops

And a picture of the Carrera

Thanks for looking!
My wife and I are considering moving out to the Wilds of West Lothian and I'm rather terrified by the costs of a Train Season Ticket. Does anyone do the ride from Linlithgow to Edinburgh on a regular basis - any suggestions?
Cheers,
Is available from Society6 can ship to the UK.

There is a story behind this print. The original was commissioned by my wife for me as a Christmas present and features many of mine and friends bikes around town. If you have ridden with me your bike might be there, especially if anyone took any photos. Never expected it to be a iPhone or pillowcase though! I have no commercial interest in the print but I do know the artist, David Fleck (ex Heriots). I have a limited edition copy of the original.

Looked like a serious incident on the path at about 7.35-7.45. Rider with nasty looking head injury lying in recovery position to the side. Bikes stopped on either side taking care. No obvious reason - no other mangled bikes or injured riders. Guessing perhaps tree debris in spokes but only because I've been avoiding twigs and branches left over from tree thinning recently. Hope the guy's OK.

Hi all,

Sorry this is a bit Off topic but my company has a free event on thursday evening called SCENE Presents and I thought some of you might be interested! The last one was really good and had some excellent discussion. This one has more well known speakers and should be a good mix of people and opinions!

http://scenetwork.co.uk/scene-presents

Winds of Change, with Dr Maitland Mackie and Director David Graham Scott– Thursday 13th September 2012

Why are renewable energy developments still treated with suspicion?
Is local ownership undervalued?
Is the battle against NIMBYism being lost?

When?

18:00 - 20:00, Thursday 13th September 2012

Where?

Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, 15 South College Street, Edinburgh.
Click here for a map. To reserve a space at the event : http://scenepresents2.eventbrite.co.uk/

What?

This evening, we look to tackle the increasingly controversial questions surrounding wind-development in Scotland. To guide our conversation, we will be joined by two eminent figures who have thought hard about these issues: Dr Maitland Mackie BSc Ag, MA Hons Econ, DBA, FRAgS, CBE, LLD, owner and Chairman of Mackie's; and Glasgow-based documentary film maker, David Graham Scott.

The night will begin with a short screening of David Graham Scott’s film Arcadia, followed by a Q&A session with the director himself. This will lead us into a short talk by Dr. Maitland Mackie, who will discuss the importance of locally-owned renewable energy.

Further Information

David’s film Arcadia (2009) was released as part of the Scottish Documentary Institute ‘Bridging the Gap: Future’ series addresses the ‘NIMBY’ mentality which is often still prevalent in public attitudes towards renewable energy developments such as wind farms.

Click here to view a trailer of David's film.

Following the story of the threat 300-foot wind turbines pose to an estate’s future in the Northern Highlands, this film examines a specific community’s historic relationship to their surrounding natural environment and the complexity of 'for' and 'against' opinions on renewable energy development.

Dr. Mackie's talk will focus on the potential of clean-tech as a cheap and sustainable energy resource in the local rural sector and the need for speeding up of the planning processes and community-owned wind farms. Dr. Mackie is one of the leading figures in promotion of locally-led renewable energy development in Scotland. Mackie’s Ice Cream's first turbine was installed in 2005, followed by two more in 2007. These turbines produce a total of 2.5MW at the farm, 30% is used on the on-site with the other 70% sold to Good Energy.

Dr. Mackie's talk will lead us into a discussion about the about the wider and future implications of the renewable energy boom and how to make these renewable technologies acceptable and desirable to local populations.

The evening will end with casual drinks and further discussion.

Hello all!
Tomorrow we're going to be at the end of the PfS route (at Murrayfield) from about 10ish, helping out with the PoP stall. If anyone wants to pop by and say hello (or even volunteer for an hour or so on the stall), let us know!

My phone number is 0777nine527004 - although we won't be there all day, so maybe just visit PoP at the event. The busiest times will be between 12-3, so that's when we'll probably need extra helpers!

Thanks all :D

from Lionfish and Minimoth (sort of on behalf of PoP).

Did anyone else watch this on BBC this evening. Generally didn't tell us much we didn't know. "It was TIE's fault, and the council and/or the government should have spotted it sooner", was the summary.

Good conclusion from presenter David Miller (not THAT David Millar!) - if you want to get across Edinburgh quickly do it on your bike, and save about a billion quid in the process! He was on a nice quiet, wide street while filming that section, though, and nowhere near the Haymarket cones.

I've just moved to Edinburgh and am looking to buy a Dutch-style city bike. The problem is that I'm totally unaccustomed to the terrain that Edinburgh seems to present. I will be living in Gilmerton and working in Roslin, and I'm hoping to commute. I'll also be wanting to do my weekly shopping at one of the ASDAs and maybe cycle around some of the interesting terrain I've seen. Can I get away with only three gears or would that be an uphill struggle? :)

Message from Spokes:

The excellent annual Spokes Bike Breakfast will be on between 8-10am on 23 June in the City Chamber quadrangle on Edinburgh's High Street.

As well as breakfast on your way to work, there will be the biggest ever range of stalls, councillors to lobby, police bike security coding and much more. Transport Convenor Cllr Gordon Mackenzie will give a short speech [probably around 8.45] doubtless mentioning the Cycling Action Plan now being worked up by the Council.

The Bike Co-op will be there with a 'Make your own Smoothie' - please note there is a mistake in the forthcoming Spokes Summer Bulletin - the Bike Coop
is bringing the smoothie maker and shop discount vouchers - but not the bike-oiling stated in the Bulletin.

The summer Spokes mailout goes out on 12 June and all members should receive the Bulletin and poster copies soon after that. The Bulletin features the need for the city centre to be made more bike friendly - particularly Princes Street and Picardy Place; and it includes the annual funding survey showing the state of cycling investment in Scotland last year 2009/10, and predictions for the current year 2010/11. If the future of Princes St and Picardy Place concern you, read the article in our Bulletin, then take
the opportunity of the Bike Breakfast to put your concerns to the councillors who turn up - just ask around and you'll soon find some!

The Spokes Bike Breakfast is part of National Bike Week. For more events, see the NBW national website [which allows you to search for local events]
and the Changing Pace NBW local website.
