I'm tempted but in Aberdour there is a retired civil servant guy Dave Seaman, who does bike repairs and service work at a little over the cost of parts. He has a vast catalogue where I've been shown that various makes of kit are exactly the same as their catalogue number match and are sourced from the same factory in Italy/Taiwan. For me it would be interesting but I could go to him and get hi to show me for a fraction of the cost I'm sure.

I'm thinking of attending - not so much for wheel building purposes, but to practice wheel truing. I've got enough bikes about the place now that being able to true the wheels would be handy.

Previously I've just replaced a wheel when the rim wore out - the shop cost of a rebuild wasn't economical given the lower end hubs in use. The current commuter bike has disc brakes, to help avoid this!

but what about building one from scratch? thinks its better to do some research and put the £50 towards parts?

I learnt enough to see that it was relatively dead easy to repair them from reading a few free online things about truing and spoke-replacement. After a few more online articles and a loan of a book I then felt confident enough to build one, though I now slightly distrust online spoke length calculators.

Most multi-tools or mini-toolkits will contain a spoke key or equivalent notch in the edge of a spanner. £0.80 buys you a replacement spoke compared to £10 or so to let a shop replace one and re-true a wheel.

Keep thinking about it but tbh there is so much info on the web I think a cheap rim, hub and spokes then just getting stuck would be a better use of the money.

anyone attended?
worth doing?

just thinking it would be handy/money saving to be able to build/repair my own wheels
