OK yes but did anyone know that none of the entry money goes to the charity and only after they've sold 4500 tickets do they allow the Charity folk to enter and even then none of their entry money goes to the charity and they have to raise £250 each.

No, you can still choose to raise money (or not) for the charity when you enter, but apart from the last few places there is no particular amount you need to raise.

Maybe it is because I have done other charidee events in the past so I already know that the way it works is you pay your entry fee and then you raise money for the charity. It never occurred to me to expect the organisers to do it for free.

According to this report, some technical staff are used that work on the Tour

I read the Ts and Cs beforehand and on the registration page it clearly states none of your entry fee goes to charity.

I know a few people that have entered and feel a bit peeved about it. I don't care how people spend their money it's up to the individual. The fact that the Marie Curie logo is all over the event would make me think that a percentage of the entry would go to the charity. I'm glad that I found this out before I entered. I may just go and ride it anyway strava my result and donate some money to marie curie and buy my self a nice treat.... how good can a £63 goodie bag really be.

I think this was discussed with respect to the Etape Pennines. The fact of the matter is that it appears that the only people who are unaware of the situation are those who haven't entered. I have yet to meet anyone who has done these events who believed that any of the entry money went to charity.

We're thinking along the same lines. Stay somewhere within 20 - 30 mins although as has already been highlighted the parking may be an issue when I get there. Think my better half might end up pushing me out the car whilst in motion!

There is some accomodation left in Pitlochry, but you need deep pockets as some seem to be charging a premium with a minimum 2 night stay.

I wouldn't mind doing this one day, but I've always been put off by the huge hike in price over an audax (especially when the roads round there, going by my experience of riding them on audaxes, are so quiet as to be practically closed anyway - compared with Edin).

The atmosphere is probably awesome though, just like PBP.

You can get a friend to register for you - they just need photo id. There is event parking which you can prepay before the event itself. It isn't too far away from the start.

If you can I would stay in town. Easier start able to soak up the atmosphere. Not such an early start. Spend an evening phoning around - I'm sure you will find something.

You need to register the night before. you wouldn't get close to Pitlochry on the morning. You would end up cycling to the start of the crush of bikes waiting for their start group. There isn't any parking in Pitlochry, the event uses one of the car parks I recollect. The Atholl Palace will do a deal of dinner bed and breakfast for you and your bike. But that will be expensive. The closed roads are good but you are surrounded by other cyclists for much of the route. Although my one time was the first carpet tack year so we all bunched up again at the top of schiehallion. It is good but it is pricey

I think trying to drive up would be a real pain. Last time I did it they specified photo ID but I'm not sure they actually looked at it. Bear in mind it is a pre-7:30 start in the morning & with so many entrants it would mean a very early start to allow for delays. Not sure I would want to do it that way.

We staying in Birnam by Dunkeld it's about a half hour drive to Pitlochry (Ideally I think you want to stay in the town itself (booked after the event last year), but if stuck may be worth giving them a try) Did a great spread the morning of the event. Good Italian/Indian in walking distance.

@amir, nobody's forcing you. ;-)

Well one could do the Three Glens Explorer in September, 164km, for £7. Two controls with food and water provided, plus a bowl of soup at the arrivée (and as many cakes as you can carry). Most 100k audaxes are a bit over distance, so compare with the EC. Some are as little as £2 to enter!

Okay you don't compete with 5000 other cyclists, no razzmatazz, no closed roads. But you've still plenty change out of 60-odd quids...
