http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ CityCyclingEdinburgh Forum » Tag: Filmhouse - Recent Topics en Tue, 19 May 2026 01:00:16 +0000 http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=20271#post-333786 Sat, 11 Jul 2020 17:13:19 +0000 davecykl 333786@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>The Filmhouse is doing pre-consultation about their proposals for a replacement Filmhouse building in Festival Square:</p> <p><a href="https://www.filmhousecinema.com/future" rel="nofollow">https://www.filmhousecinema.com/future</a></p> <p>Survey (closes 12 July):<br /> <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TK2MRYQ" rel="nofollow">https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TK2MRYQ</a></p> <p>Any thoughts?</p> <p>I have put this in Infrastructure as the plans sadly don't seem to take any proper account of the existing not-quite-fully-baked cycleways from Festival Square to Shandwick Place (via bridge over the WAR) and EICC/Canal (via Scottish Widows rotunda thingie), and potentially extending eastwards across Lothian Road to Usher Hall and beyond. </p> <p>The plans seem to show no access from the cycleway to south of the planned Filmhouse, and stairs (what?!!) from the north side down to Lothian Road.</p> <p>Given that Spokes had doodled drawings linking all of this up since at least sometime in the 1980s [1], would it be too much to expect so-called "proper" architects to get this right?</p> <p><a href="https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/55.9459/-3.2049" rel="nofollow">https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/55.9459/-3.2049</a></p> <p>And, likewise, will the Council ever get their gardyloo together to actually destination/direction signpost these cycle routes properly?</p> <p>And, obviously, where will the cycle parking be?</p> <p>[1] those Spokes doodles were my first introduction, as a young country bumpkin, to the idea that town planning was A Thing, and not just the random unforeseen messy results of any old ramshackle collection of unrelated and uninterested "development" proposals that the UK sadly seems to do by default…</p> <p><hr /><br /> Not so cycling related, am I the only one not very impressed at the building relegating us proles to the increasingly dank depths of the Metropolis under-city, while only the Eloi get to venture up above ground and into the sky? </p>
