For the background to the non-dropped MMW kerb see...

"because they didn't bother to drop the kerb far enough along"

It's worse than that - there used to be an 'advanced drop kerb' but the pavement was redone and the kerb reinstated according to previous plan 'accidentally', but the 'mistake' has never been rectified.

The double set of lights at this point is a bizarre bit of infrastructure. (This IS Edinburgh.) I don't think many people stop there when red.

Curiously (ha!) there are no bits of 'safety' railing here as there are at Gifford Park and King's Haugh.

Of course if this was a junction for motor vehicles they would probably re-position the Unicorn and improve things massively for cyclists and pedestrians...

I went through this morning on my random "it's sunny - tour Edinburgh" commute, and was able to turn off onto the canal (riding west) even though the light went red, due to the smartly positioned drop kerb.

Contrast that to the top of MMW where I've often waited pointlessly at the red light, simply because they didn't bother to drop the kerb far enough along...

Access to the canal certainly better, the one time I have done it -- walking from Loudon's cafe across to canal -- the 'walk signal' was _very_ short though.

"There's an 'event' to launch a new junction layout???"

Yes.

I think the last 'similar' one was for Rodney Street Tunnel.

I have always said that CEC should highlight/publicise/celebrate new cycle infrastructure, so I suppose I should welcome this one.

I have yet to go at 'rush hour' to see it in action.

It's certainly the case that that roundabout was dangerous and (also) access to Canal was unsatisfactory, so it has to be an improvement for cyclists and pedestrians - 'motorists' and ENews commenters will always whinge (and ignore the rules).

I used the junction on my ride home yesterday, going into town along Fountainbridge and heading for Semple Street. Having filtered to the front using the approved cycle lane, and taking my place in the ASL box, on green I accelerated hard, because the taxi rank was full of taxis and I had a bunch of vehicles behind me. What made it more difficult was the big bus currently collecting passengers, immediately after the taxi rank.

Fortunately, and rather pleasantly, the car driver behind me held back to allow me to move several feet to my right to pass the bus. Had I been fully in control of the situation, I would have taken full primary position at the lights and proceeded at my own pace.

Slower or less experienced cyclists are surely not enjoying this new junction layout, if they also don't want to waste time using the Toucan crossings.
