We walked along the roads last night on the way to/from the school concert. They had been treated; the pavements hadn't. Musselburgh has only had 2,000 years of pedestrianisation to get it right. TIM.

On my most memorable sighting of a council mini-tractor, it was being driven by a bored teenage boy. Definitely male. He'd got carried away - the thing was meant to be clearing snow off the pavements, but the driver seemed so bored that he'd simply floored the throttle to get the ordeal over with as quickly as possible. The result was that the mini-tractor was going so fast that it was bouncing over the accumulated snow, leaping and jumping crazily along the pavement at top speed - pedestrians were screaming and diving into the road to escape being flattened ...

Oh yes the gender stereo typing why has to be a man?, although rarely hear the OECD considering to mandate the percentage of road diggers that should be of a specific gender. Typically seems the better jobs that that become “diversity issues.

“get a little man out with a shovel?”

The council road worker currently for better or worse are much more likely to be a man, but the real cause for concern in this sentence "little man". -)

There is no reason to assume that a council man with a shovel would be little in height, as oppose to large or average height. Can only assume a reference to little in status, "little people", as council man with a shovel would typically be of lower than average social economic etc.

The only metric that could assume would typically be little in relation to the population as a whole that could be applied to council man with shovel.

“Little” has a bourgeoisie inference, "little people", tend to think would be politer to refer to the council workers as a pleb from the council.
-)

After much deliberation “little man” may have little gender implications in this context, as the phrase” little man” does not seem exclusively gender specific.

Although may be an assumption that a man, it may still be correct to use this term in relation to a woman ?

"A person who conducts business or life on a small or ordinary scale; an average person."

I'm not sure the councils were caught out. It was pretty clear yesterday afternoon that there was likely to be a hard freeze overnight - clear enough that I cleared and salted our front path yesterday evening.

Leamington Walk was ungritted this morning. I saw one of the (very few) cyclists come off - luckily their ego was bruised more than anything else. I was on foot, in anticipation of evening drinks.

Spoke to my mate at Fife council lastnight, and he reconded they would be better gritting the paths first, then the roads, but apparently hospitals are dead against that idea. Even hospitals appear to want to force pedestrians into their cars! over public transport.

Had my first trip down the recently pedestrianised George Street last night and was pleasantly surprised to find some new bike lanes in lovely fresh paint.

Generally a joy to use but for the crap diversion around the Assembly Rooms (which left me standing bewildered at a dead end before noticing the subtle diversion sign).

A couple of questions though:

1) What's supposed to happen at the crossing at the Hanover(?) Street roundabout? The bike lane has dotted lines but no stop lines that I saw. I just carefully nosed out hoping for the best.

2) What are you supposed to do at the St Andrews Square end if heading east? The bike lane in that direction suddenly veers onto the pedestrian island, but I've no idea where to go from there. I ended up gingerly rolling past some tourists standing waiting for the green man and onto the road where I waited (uncomfortably, beyond the traffic light) for the lights to change.

The RIE is not just for Edinburgh - it needed to be accessible (especially by ambulance) for folk from the Lothians and the Borders.

From the RIE website (with my bold):
The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is a major acute teaching hospital. With a 24-hour accident and emergency department, it provides a full range of acute medical and surgical services for patients from across Lothian and specialist services for people from across the south east of Scotland and beyond.

"So remind me why did they move the RIE out to Little France?"

Because in the 70s there was a particularly strong reaction to the 'inevitability' of the expansion of the (old) RI and demolition of (more of) Chalmers Street, Lonsdale Terrace, Panmure Place etc.

Apparently it 'could' have gone to Cameron Toll (which might have made it more likely that the South Sub would have opened to passengers).

"Why are they about to move the Sick Kids too?"

Presumably a mix of 'combined campus', new building/facilities being 'better' and the idea that the existing site is 'worth a lot of money'.

Stickman - Town centres are generally far easier to get to by foot, bike or public transport - so the environmental impact of people travelling to them is smaller. In addition, town centres provide more opportunities for local and independent businesses, as there are a far greater range of premises available to rent. These businesses generally pay their taxes and employ from within the local community - boosting employment.

Vibrant town centres attract new businesses and development, consolidating development in already accessible areas, limiting urban sprawl and reducing car dependency.

All good, in my opinion.

I'm not going to argue with the idea of pedestrianisation/better cycle provision, but arguing purely on the economic grounds of "improved city centre trade" raises it's own debate. This likely won't be "new" activity, but activity displaced/relocated from elsewhere. If that means out-of-town centres then fine, but we should acknowledge that there will be losers as well.

I think the general point that ped/bike friendly cities are much more pleasant and safer is argument enough.

Lezzles, I am also very confused about the "part-pedestrianised" bit about that photo. Is the part that's been pedestrianised the pavements? It looks to me like a lane of traffic (Range Rover) with two lanes of on-street parking. And since the parking in the left of the picture has bumpers to stop them moving forward they can only have come in from a lane on the extreme left. Which makes two lanes of traffic as I count it - just as there always was!

@Lezzles Suggest you have a read of the George Street Improvements thread for a blow by blow account, but it's a work in progress. Photo may have been taken before the barriers were put in place.

I've not been into George Street in ages. I'm trying to work out what that picture means.

How is it a cycle lane if there is a Rangerover driving down it? Is the bike meant to be in the thin strip to the left or the right where the bike sign is painted?
