The one I found was out the back of Saline.

Not sure if I've ridden that, though I've been through Saline a few times. As you say the roads around there are pretty quiet anyway.

The one I found was out the back of Saline. I didn't venture down it so I can't really comment on what it looked like, but I was already in a quiet back road with very little traffic on it and it was smaller than that.

Don't think it was a Sustrans route though.

There are maps at the back of the link above if you are interested..

I've seen a couple of signs like that round Clackmannan/Alloa way. I'm assuming the one you saw is on the road from Clackmannan to the Clackmannanshire bridge?

Must admit the first time I saw it I did wonder what it meant. Presumably a 'friendly' road because it is (mostly) very quiet? Nearly all the motor traffic on the nearby A road instead. A bit of nonsense to announce what ought to be a common sense observation on the part of walkers and cyclists. I suppose they needed to 'do something' given the road is on a Sustrans route, but obviously lowering the speed limit further might prove unpopular with locals so let's just bung up some optimistic signs instead.

There are two that I know of. One from the New Kincardine Bridge to Clackmanan, which is mostly very quiet apart from the odd local resident. The other is this road.

http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/39333671/

These two roads have the signs spoken about above.

I've been on that road a number of times. It amused me that it was described as "cycle friendly" only to find it was near single track with a 40mph limit and only a recommendation to give way to oncoming cyclists.

Needles to say it was being used as a cut-through racetrack by what I assume were the local roads for local people brigade.

Many roads in Perthshire very quiet regardless of sped limit as brand new roads have been built tht take the traffic and not many people live there. In my limited experience the locals in the little villages are out on a Saturday morning sweeping the roads

The ones I saw were 40mph, but there are also some 30mph. There are some pictures in the document (p9 of the pdf or p83 of doc's own numbering).

I agree that 40mph isn't that cycle or walking friendly but it's better than 60mph...

I was on loop round the Forth recently, when I came across a quiet country side road with 40mph signage titled "Walking and cycling friendly road".

A bit of goggling has come up with this. A pilot by Perth & Kinross Council to slow down traffic on quiet back roads.

Interested to know whether the pilot is considered a success and whether the various Lothian councils could be persuaded to try something similar.
