There is at least one other titanium Pino in Scotland - it's even in Edinburgh! It looks like this:

I borrowed it a few years back for the Gadget Show race through the city:

http://fwd.channel5.com/gadget-show/videos/challenge/road-trip-part-1

It was possible to have front control on the older steel/ti Pinos - never saw one like that, though. Theoretically it could be done on a new alu Pino as well. Or, you can ride a normal one from the front if you hold the handlebars behind your head ;-)

Side by side tandem trikes are maybe easier/safer if you want couples fighting to take control...!.

I'm sure Hase did have an option once for the early Pino... need to dig out an early brochure. As you say I can't imagine it applying to gears. Even back in late 90s Hase seemed to think of everything...

Dual controls sound intriguing - I can probably imagine some sort of intercept in the steering and additional brakes, but can't work out how the gears could have additional controls.

And every imagining seems a horrible cludge and, as you said, terrifying!

No doubt this is due to my lack of imagination and an elegant solution could exist - have you any examples in mind for dual control tandems?

Yours may be the only titanium Pino in the Scottish sector of this island. There are about 3 'ordinary' Pinos in Edinburgh.

Velo Vision had an article about a couple riding one in the Lake District

When I was looking at a family tandem way back in 1998 I had Pino on my list. I liked the idea of having a dual control one where the recumbent pilot can fly the thing and terrify the person on the back.

In the end we went for a Thorn Voyager the first of many non standard machines to come...

Nope

But I do know that the list function messed the CCE layout on some browsers when I tried to use it, so clearly some bugs.

As to 30th - I'll be in London, but don't let that put you off.

@Stepdoh

> The big question of the day,
> is... can you see the front
> half? Or does the recumbent
> invisibility field not work
> with pino? Pinos?

Can't help with the pluralisation, although apparently the riders are “Pinonauts”!

I’m afraid that after riding it for a few days there is an inverse invisibility field evident. A machine to puzzle pedestrians, frighten dogs and intrigue cyclists – definitely not one for the shy amongst us!

@chdot

> How about an hour or so
> one weekend? Perhaps at
> the Pavilion Cafe - food,
> drink + space.

Sounds grand by me – this coming Saturday (30th), 15:00 would be ideal, but I’m open to suggestions…

"Oooh! I want a go!"

In the early days of CCE there was a call for 'meeting up' to see/try bikes.

This developed into PY coffee mornings - which aren't suitable for everyone and tend to be rushed.

I've just bought a second hand Hase Pino from Kinetics...

Kinetics (Pino page)

Made the mistake of riding it solo, then hiring it for the day with my wife - verdict was that it made her feel like a teenager again!

So, despite not intending to buy a tandem, we lasted less than 24 hours before turning the hire into a purchase.

As a tandem, it's pretty versatile - we can swap positions with heights of 5'10" and 5'4", but the latter found the front a little bit of a stretch. We're told that trimming the boom a bit should sort that, but I don't want to do that just yet.

With steering similar to that of a cargo bike, it takes a bit of acclimatisation. Hopping on to it feels odd, but I got so used to it after the hire that the next morning's commute felt strangely twitchy and speedy!

A Pino can be quite an investment, so if you're thinking of getting one and want to see it in the metal, PM me. We've got the Rohloff geared version with a titanium frame (no longer available), but the geometry matches the current steel frame and is very similar to the coupled aluminium option.
