Nice to hear from GDR, the northern end of his route could get hilly. Ferry is good idea

Having moved to South Cumbria last year I can thoroughly recommend the Bay Cycleway fro Morcambe to Ulverston-a large chunk of your trip. Great scenery, mostly quiet roads and canal path and a few cheeky little hills. I don’t know the west coast eg up to Whitehaven but have been north from Grange over Sands to Windermere. Cross over on the ferry and go up the west side of the lake then paths/ lanes from Ambleside to Grasmere. I’m afraid my knowledge all gets a bit vague beyond this. Good luck!

Cockermouth is nice
Keswick has a pencil museum
The Solway Lido [Carlisl;e’s Butlins] is still there [we went one year AS kids, remember swimming in the rain being actually nice]

Otherwise you probably don’t want to do it, which usually means you will do it?

All very practical especially @chdot's mapping help.

But now I have a new question: do I actually WANT to wriggle my way along the coastline avoiding A-roads as much as possible for two days? Right now on a too-warm day it sounds like a spiffing plan - might seem less so on a damp September weekend...

Is the clue

Eschew the downhill for the SW breeze

Ask the boy on the penny farthing

Cycle from Blackpool to Carlisle. Stop at Cockermouth rather than Winscale etc

Aren't the prevailing winds the same as for most of the rest of the UK i.e. south-westerly? In which case S-N would appear to be be most likely to get a helpful wind.

Have to be in Blackpool for a Thing early September. If you wanted to cycle along the coast between Blackpool & Carlisle (rather than the most direct route) would you go S-N or N-S?
